[01] The destruction of the environment in the area of occupied Klepini has reached dimensions of a crime against the world cultural heritage

Under title: Environmental catastrophe at Klepini and subtitle `No forest or valley was left at the foot of Pentadaktylos mountain, Turkish Cypriot AFRIKA newspaper (28.04.05) reports that the illegal construction sector continues to cause irreparable destruction to the natural beauty of northern Cyprus, and adds:

A huge environmental catastrophe is taking place just north of Klepini under the very rocks for the sake of which Pentadaktylos mountain range got its name.

The bulldozers and construction machinery working illegally for days have completely destroyed the ecological balance. Along with the perennial trees, the ecological balance has suffered irreparable damages.

The paper goes on stressing that when publicity was given to the issue volunteer environmentalists got into action and found out that the construction carried out by AGA Development Ltd., is illegal and the owner of the company is one of the former so-called Director-Generals of the Interior Ministry. It was also found out that no permission was given from the so-called Environment Assessment Commission.

In spite of the reaction to these developments the said company continues its works, especially intensifying them during weekends, at the gorge of the mountain.

The Director of the Environmental Research Centre of the so-called Lefka European University, Mrs Sherife Gunduz said that the destruction of the nature at Klepini is a major lack of seriousness and urged the establishment of a competent ministry. Mrs Gunduz is very critical about the whole affair and warns of the consequences not only to the environment but also to the human beings and the fauna and flora endemic to the area.

[02] Talat pledges to apply new policies and strategies in the new period

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (28.04.05) reports that the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Mehmet Ali Talat has said that they would prepare new policies and strategies which would pave the way of the Turkish Cypriots in the new period that comes.

Mr Talat met yesterday with the Speaker of the Parliament of the occupation regime, Mrs Fatma Ekenoglu, who paid a courtesy visit to congratulate him on his election.

Mr Talat said that new steps will soon be put into force with the aim of realizing the objective of the integration with the rest of the international community, achieving a solution to the Cyprus problem, and becoming a part of the European Union.

Mr Talat described the period to come as a really complicated period and noted that the EU has began making some steps regarding Cyprus and that the Unions Commissioner responsible for the Enlargement will be visiting the island. The Turkish Cypriot leader said also that the United Nations is investigating the ground in order to find out whether a visit of a high ranking UN official is possible.

Mr Talat said: In the period to come we shall make steps in harmony with the wish of the Turkish Cypriot people for being integrated with the world, for solution and the EU. We shall begin making the steps lying within our responsibility. Of course, at this point the Greek Cypriot side must also be flexible and take the hand of peace we have offered. We have extended this hand. The whole world saw this, observed this. Besides, the UN Secretary General expects the first move from the Greek Cypriot side. The Greek Cypriot side has not yet given a positive response to this demand of the Secretary General, but it seems that it is under serious pressure. Some move take place on this issue within the next few days.

We shall determine our policy and continue our way. Therefore, I do not think it is right at this stage to make many political prognoses. We have to evaluate the situation. A new period has begun. New policies will definitely be determined and followed within this period, policies that will pave the way of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Meanwhile, Mrs Ekenoglu praised Mr Talat, and expressed the hope that he will be successful in realizing his new duties.

[03] Erdogan takes a hawkish stance towards EU

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erodgan has said it is most natural for Turkey to expect the approval of the Financial Assistance and Direct Trade Regulations prepared by the European Commission for the Turkish Cypriots.

Speaking at his party´s parliamentary group meeting, Mr Erdogan made it clear that there is no link between the Cyprus issue and the conditions put forward for its EU membership.

Stressing that there is no justification for an argument on what should be done on the Cyprus issue, he said the European Union is losing its credibility by saying that it cannot do anything on the Cyprus issue although they are well aware of the unfair situation on the issue.

He went on and said: Being aware of the unfair situation on the issue, makes it necessary to do away with the unfair situation. For years we have warned them that one day they would be in this situation, but unfortunately, our respondents were unable to have this far-sightedness.

Erdogan went on and said that Turkey will sign the Harmonization Protocol, and noted: It is our right to expect from the EU to approve the financial assistance and Direct Trade Regulations envisaged for the TRNC.

[04] The Motherland Party will be changed into Democratic Motherland Party

Turkish daily AKSAM newspaper (28.04.05), reports that Mr Erkan Mumcu, who was elected Chairman of the Motherland Party (MP) is getting ready to introduce changes within the party.

AKSAM reports that with a view to erasing the negative footprints left by the party from its past activities, Mumcu has decided to change the party´s name. In order to realize this, the Motherland Party got in touch with the Democratic Party, paid to this party 165 thousand new TL worth of debts and bought the name.

AKSAM further reports that the DP will hold its Annual Congress on 13 May during which the DP will dissolve itself. In its turn the Motherland Party, on 21 May will hold its Rules and Regulations Congress and the name of the DP will be added to the Motherland´s name, thus becoming Democratic Motherland Party (DMP).

With the Rules and Regulations Congress, Motherland Party membership lists shall be reviewed and a new list will be prepared.

[05] The office of the Turkish Chief of the General Staff: The Greek Orthodox Seminary in Heybeliada should not be opened

Turkish daily HURRIYET newspaper (28.04.05), reports that the office of the Turkish Chief of the General Staff, has submitted its views to the General Secretariat of the National Security Council, regarding the Political Document of the National Security, (PDNS) which will be reviewed.

The PDNS, which is known as Red Book, will be compiled and reviewed by the General Secretariat of the National Security Council.

Among the proposals made by the office of the Turkish Chief of the General Staff are:

    a) The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Fener should be prepared in its attempt to upgrade its present status.

    b) There should be opposition against the demand for the re-opening of the Seminary in Heybeliada (Halki).

    c) The Greek Pontus propaganda that endangers Turkey´s territorial integrity should be prevented.

    d) Greece has to respond to Turkey´s efforts for good neighbourly relations.

[06] The murderer of Joe Swindells was arrested

Turkish Cypriot CYPRUS TIMES newspaper (28.04.05) reports under banner headlines in its front page under the title Got him!, that the Turkish Cypriot Yalcin Huseyin Solat, aged 42, was arrested by the so-called police of Ankara´s puppet regime in occupied Cyprus, for the murder of the British resident Mr Joe Swindells, aged 92, who was found dead in his home in occupied Kyrenia last Saturday.

The arrested Turkish Cypriot has reportedly admitted that he murdered the British resident after two days of interrogation.

[07] Persons arrested for human trafficking from Turkey through the occupied areas were let free

Turkish Cypriot KIBRIS newspaper (28.04.05), reports that the last five out of 34 persons who were under custody by the occupation authorities as members of a ring smuggling human beings from Turkey to Europe through the occupied areas were released on bail yesterday.

The issue came on to the agenda about a month ago and yesterday the so-called court in the occupied part of Lefkosia ordered that Sait Arifu Islam Mahmut Kazi Ali, from Bangladesh, Imam Huseyin Malik and Asik Huseyin from Pakistan with the Turkish Cypriot Levent Baysal should be set free on bail, because the police investigation against them was completed.

[08] The so-called ambassador of Turkey to occupied Lefkosia visited Talat in order to take instructions

Under the title Who is taking instructions from who? Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (28.04.05) reports that Mr Ayhan Karahan, the so-called ambassador of Turkey to occupied Lefkosia, along with all the personnel of the Turkish embassy visited yesterday the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Mehmet Ali Talat.

As the paper writes, Mr Karahan stated that they visited Mr Talat in order to express their devotion to him and in order to present to him the efforts they have made regarding the prosperity and the happiness of the Turkish Cypriots and to take his instructions. Mr Karahan, who also stated that this is the first time that he visited the presidential palace along with his co-operators, stated the following: We came together in order to present our devotion to our second president.

On his behalf, Mr Talat thanked Mr Karahan for the assistance the Turkish Republic is extending to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus: The assistance of the Turkish Republic will be our chief support from now on, he said.
