[01] Turkish Cypriot craftsmen satisfied with the interest of the Greek Cypriot customers

Under the banner front-page title The face of the Arasta craftsmen is smiling, Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (15.04.05) reports that the Turkish Cypriot craftsmen, especially those who have shops in the Arasta area of the occupied part of Nicosia, are satisfied with the interest of the Greek Cypriots who visit the occupied areas and the shopping they do.

The paper writes that the Greek Cypriots pour great amounts of money in the Turkish Cypriot market. However, since the opening of the barricades and the limited free movement, the occupation regime kept no data regarding the amount of the money spent in the occupied areas.

The so-called minister of economy and tourism of the occupation regime, Dervis Kemal Deniz, has said that in the end of the year they would do an estimate of how much money has been transferred.

Mr Deniz noted in statements two days ago that the increase of the shopping amount to 135 euros has relieved the craftsmen and the businessmen.

KIBRIS points out that the Greek Cypriots are mostly interested in buying trousers, t-shirts, pullovers and other ready-made clothes from the occupied areas.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Craftsmen Chamber, Hurrem Tulga said that in spite of the fact that there are no data it is seen that the Greek Cypriots leave big amounts of money in the occupied part of Cyprus. The highest spending buyers in the area within the walls are the Greek Cypriots. They are doing shopping easily because of the price advantage, without caring about chauvinism, he added and argued that the opening of the barricade in Ledra Street is as important as the opening of the ports for direct trade. The Ledra barricade must immediately open with the goal of breaking down the isolation, he argued.

[02] Turkish Cypriot law professor assesses the ECHRs decision on Myra Xenides Aresti case against Turkey

Under the banner front-page title The green light has not been given to the compensations committee, Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (15.04.05) reports that Mrs Hacer Soykan Adaoglu, professor at the Law Faculty of so-called Eastern Mediterranean University has expressed the opinion that the recent decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding the Greek Cypriot refugee Myra Xenides Arestis appeal against Turkey does mot mean that the green light is given for the so-called compensations committee established by the occupation regime.

To be given the green light for the compensations committee is not something we can bear, noted Dr. Adaoglu adding that the arrangements that the ECHR wants the Turkish side to make in the above-mentioned committee is the change of the constitutional and legal system and recognition of the 1960 title-deeds by the occupation regime.

Dr Adaoglu argued that the acceptance of the appeal of Mrs Aresti by the ECHR means that all the positions of the Turkish side after the referendums on the issue of the properties are rejected. Te decision in the Arestis case, she noted, confirmed that the control of Turkey on the northern part of the island still continues and that the compensations committee is not effective and authoritative.

Noting that she could foresee what will the decision of the Court be on the substance of the case, Dr. Adaoglu reminded the Titina Loizidou case and added: If as in the Loizidou case, it is established that the person has the right to his property and that this right is violated by Turkey, because the conditions have not changed, it could not take a different decision regarding the substance than the decision taken in the Loizidou case.

[03] The last statements of the candidates for the so-called presidential elections

Turkish Cypriot daily YENIDUZEN newspaper (15.04.05), in its front leader page under the title The last 48 hours, reports that the Turkish Cypriots, who did not know anyone else apart from Rauf Denktas as a President, will make a new selection. The Turkish Cypriots will take a step for a new period.

It is the first time that the Turkish Cypriot political parties will not have rallies before the election, except from the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), which will hold its last rally tonight.

The leader of the RTP, Mehmet Ali Talat said that there is not a second round of the elections and that he will be elected with the 60% of the votes. On the other hand, the leader of the National Unity Party, Dervis Eroglu, said that he will compete with Talat on the second round of the elections.

Mustafa Arabacioglu, the candidate of the Democratic Party, said that if he competes with Talat on the second round he will definitely win the elections. The leader of the Communal Liberation Party and candidate for the elections, Huseyin Angolemli, announced that in case he is elected the entrance to the occupied areas of Cyprus only with the identity card will be ended and that the obligatory military service will be abolished. Mr Angolemli also said that there will be definitely a second round in the elections.

The leader of the New Party, Nuri Cevikel, said that Talat with Eroglu or Talat with himself will be in the second round.

Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (15.04.05) reports the statements of the other candidates. Ayhan Kaymak, an independent candidate, said that Mehmet Ali Talat will be the winner of the elections, but not from the first round.

The Cyprus Socialist Party made a call to the voters to give a vote to the socialists and to support their candidate and the only woman in the elections, Zehra Cengiz.

Arif Salih Kirdag said that he would not compete with Rauf Denktas if was a candidate.

The independent candidate Zeki Besikepeli did not make any statement.

[04] President Sezer´s visit to Syria ended with successes

Ankara Anatolia news agency (14.04.05) reported from Ankara that the Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer has stated today (Thursday) that his visit to Syria is not only important for the Arab and Islamic worlds, but also the region itself.

"We consider Syria as a prominent republic in the region. We have made decisions to further improve the existing ties in politics, economics and commercial areas."

Sezer stressed that the hospitality he received from the Syrian President Bashir Esad and Prime Minister Naci Otri was exceptional.

"I would like to thank the Syrian people for their warm hospitality," mentioned Sezer.

Sezer pointed out that his discussions with Esad were very fruitful. "We had a chance to evaluate our historical ties. We discussed regional issues that have an impact on global politics. We talked about the United Nations Security Council decision that puts a demand on Syria to withdraw its troops from Lebanon."

According to Sezer, relations between Turkey and Syria are promising despite rough relations in the recent past. "We are very happy to see that the business communities of both nations are interacting very firmly. Our ties with Syria will contribute to regional peace and stability."

[05] Erdogan says supporters of EU are now blocking the accession process

NTV television (15.04.05) broadcast that the Turkish Prime Minister was given the Best Leader Award in the medias Star of the Economy in 2004 ceremony.

Mr Erdogan has taken a swipe at those he accuses of hindering the countrys bid to gain full membership of the European Union.

Without directly naming any of those he believes are blocking Turkeys accession process, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said late Thursday that those supporting the European Union membership were slowly starting to put obstacles in the way of its bid due to habits they had for many years. Why? Because we have started steps they cannot digest. Well you will, friend, Erdogan said.

The steps taken by Turkey were rights won and it was impossible to turn back from the reforms, he said. No one should even think that these advances of civilisation can be taken back, said the Prime Minister.

[06] Kretschmer: Turkeys military are still making political statements

NTV television (15.04.05) reports that the European Commission representative to Turkey said Turkey has lots more to do in order to reach European Union standards.

In an interview with television station NTV, Hans Jörg Kretschmer, the European Commissions representative to Turkey, said that political statements on issues like the flag burning incident that should be made by civilians were being made by the military.

This incident shows there are distances to be covered to reach at EU standards, said Kretschmer. For example, you would not have this in Germany. The Chief of the General Staff would not have uttered those words and make such a statement in reaction to social events.

Kretschmer then said he would not like to exaggerate the situation, adding that in Turkey the relationship between the military and civilian authorities were on a good track. Turning to the attempted lynching by a mob in Trabzon of five activists advocating reforms in Turkeys prison system, Kretschmer said no group had the right to prevent the freedom of expression of another group.

[07] 54,751 persons visited the isolated occupied areas of Cyprus during March

    [B] COMMNETARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

[08] Columnist in AFRIKA calls on Talat not to boost as winner because his election is due to Turkey

Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (15.04.05) reports under the above title, that it is Ankara that decides who will be the President in the occupied area. Columnist Turgut Avsaroglu, in his column Openly, refers to the forthcoming so-called Presidential elections in the occupied area, on 17.04.05, and Republican Turkish Party, candidate Mehmet Ali Talat who with Turkey´s backing is sure of his victory.

Avsaroglu goes on and says: Talat, who got the support of Ankara behind him, has no problem regarding his election to the post.

His only problem is the percentage of votes he will get. He wants to attain the highest possible percentage.

    Is this important?

Yes, it is important for him. He wants to get at the minimum 65% of the votes. Will there be any change if he is elected with 65%?

No. Nothing wil change even if he is elected with 99%.

The clever thing is not to be elected with the support of Turkey. The clever thing would be to get elected without Ankara´s support. However, Talat cannot do such thing. In the 2000 elections Ankara wanted Denktas to be elected and Talat received only 10% of the votes.

Now Ankara has decided that Talat must win, and as a result he expects to get 65%.

Afsaroglu goes on and writes that if Talat gets the votes he is expected we will congratulate not Talat but Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. We will shout `bravo Ankara!´

    Why bravo?

Because Ankara has the power to make its candidate to be elected, for this reason we will cheer Ankara. We will say: bravo to Ankara because in old Denktas´s place it brought a new Denktas.

If Talat is not elected from the first round and is elected in the second round, then we will say brave to the Turkish Cypriot people.

What we do not like in Talat most is that he started boosting very early.

He is using Ankara´s power against his opponents in a very ugly manner. And while doing this he is boosting

Avsaroglu then refers to Talat´s unbecoming manner during a panel discussion with his main opponent Dervish Eroglu.

He describes in a vivid manner how Talat became aggressive when he was asked by Eroglu to give an account of his government´s activities in the past one year.

Avsaroglu concludes by stressing that whatever is done in the occupied area is done by Ankara´s approval and money, no one should boost, there is no need to that. Whoever Ankara wants he is made president.
