[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] A Turk from the Black Sea area is constructing a chicken farm in the free areas of CyprusUnder the title: "The Turks are constructing the chicken farm" mainland SABAH newspaper (19.10.04) publishes a news item by its Athens correspondent Stelios Berberakis. Reporting from Nicosia Mr Berberakis describes how he met with a Turk coming from Giresun, Black Sea area of Turkey at the hotel's lobby, before leaving the government controlled areas in Nicosia. His name is Yilmaz and he is a contractor. Yilmaz built a chicken farm in the occupied areas and Pipis, one of the biggest chicken farm owners in the government controlled areas in Cyprus, has visited the farm in the occupied area and wanted the same to be built for his company in the free areas by Yilmaz. He invited Yilmaz to construct the installations.Berberakis further reports that Yilmaz is living and working in the free areas for the last three months and he will stay there for another two months. SABAH correspondent concludes by saying that there are reports coming in that Greek Cypriot businessmen have already started to enter into joint investments with Turkish firms. [02] Another wall is going to be pulled downStelios Berberakis reporting in Turkish mainland SABAH newspaper (19.10.04) under the above title writes that the politicians, the UN and the EU were unable to solve the Cyprus problem, but it will be settled through the cooperation of the grocers, shop owners and shopkeepers from both sides. He says that the dividing wall at the end of the Ledra Street in Nicosia will be pulled down soon and thus the two market places divided for the last thirty years will unite again. Quoting officials from both sides Mr Berberakis reports that the wall is planned to be pulled down until December. The developments that lead the shop owners from both sides to come to this decision were the partial opening of the crossings two years ago. The shopkeepers from both sides believe that once the walls are pulled down business life will be revitalized in the area. [03] The so-called Prime Minister received an official letter by the term Presidency of the European Union. Talat says the Turkish side´s basic principles have been achievedTurkish Cypriot daily YENIDUZEN newspaper (19.10.04), under the banner headlines "Good news from Holland to North Cyprus", reports that the so-called Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat announced that he received yesterday morning an official letter by the term Presidency of the European Union ( the Netherlands).Mr Talat said: "The letter reaffirms the European Union's expressed determination to help bring an end to the Turkish Cypriot people's international isolation and that it goes on to say that the Financial Aid Package, designed to channel EU funds for the development of North Cyprus economy, will be approved soon". Stressing that the EU confirmed its position that a Cyprus settlement can only be achieved through the efforts of the United Nations, Mr Talat said that this is an indirect rejection of the Greek Cypriot position that the Cyprus problem should be resolved within the European Union itself. Mr Talat continued: "This letter is made up of three basic elements. These are: a confirmation that the European Union shares the Turkish Cypriot side's view that the Free Trade Regulation and the Financial Assistance Regulation are inseparable from - and compliment - each other; that the European Union reaffirms its devotion to the lifting of the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people; and that the Union believes that resolving the Cyprus Problem is not its business". "These are the three basic principles the Turkish Cypriot side has been struggling to achieve lately", he concluded. [04] European "Green" politicians are meeting today in IstanbulTurkish daily HURRIYET (19.10.04), in its front page under the banner headline "Friends at Critical Period: Greens Are in Turkey", reports that the European "Green" politicians, who directed the harshest criticisms to Turkey for years, are meeting today in Istanbul to provide political support to Ankara at its last EU curve. The Greens Group of the European Parliament will hold its general assembly meeting today in Istanbul to make a call for the launching of EU membership negotiations with Turkey at the end of this year. For the meeting to continue until Thursday, Greens' deputies Cem Ozdemir, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Monica Frassoni and Joost Lagendijk are in Turkey. German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer will also attend the meeting along with the Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who said: "The European Greens will introduce with this congress their full support to Turkey's accession process into EU". Former Kurd deputy Leyla Zana will address the conference on its second day. [05] The number of tourists who visited the pseudostate in the first nine months of 2004 increased by 27.6%Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (19.10.04) reports that according to a written statement by the so-called ministry of economy and tourism of the pseudostate the number of tourists who visited occupied Cyprus in the first nine months of the year 2004 (January to September), has increased by 27.6%, compared to the same period last year.As the paper writes 129,979 persons visited occupied Cyprus from the beginning of this year until September 2004. There was also a 9.6% increase in the number of hotel-bookings in the same period, compared with the same period last year. Almost half of foreign tourists who visited occupied Cyprus were British (45%), followed by Greeks (8,4%), Germans (3,1%), Australians (2,7%), Italians (2,5%), French (2%), while 35,7% were of other nationalities. In addition, KIBRIS writes that the closed port in occupied Famagusta came to a standstill yesterday because the port's crane was broken. As the paper writes the crane broke down due to overload because the number of the imported materials, especially in the construction sector, has increased. [B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS[06] Population explosion after the construction boomUnder the above title Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (19.10.04) publishes the following commentary in the Afrika'dan Mektup (letter from AFRIKA) column:"If the official information given by the ministry of economy and tourism is studied, in the period between January and September of this year, 129,979 foreign tourists visited the TRNC. In comparison with the same period of the year 2003, this figure increased to a level of 27.6%. However, this ratio does not match the increase of the hotel occupancy. The increase there is not 27.6%, it is only 9,6%. I wonder where the 17% that is left spent the night. From the 442,848 travellers who visited TRNC in the period January-September, 312,869 persons were Turkish citizens. This shows a 27,3% increase compared to the same period of the past year. This means that after the referendums, our country faced a terrible flow of Turkish citizens. From those who come we cannot know how many stay and how many go back. However, since they do not stay in our tourist establishments, they surely found another "warm nest" for themselves. It seems that our Turkish brothers were really lucky, after the "yes" in the referendum. Those who come are increased by many times.. And we think that the Turkish Cypriots who emigrate increased as well. They leave as soon as they put in their pockets the passport of the Cyprus (Republic). However, what a pity, official information is not given as regards those who leave. How many persons left after the referendum? Where did they go? Why did they go? It is not clear. We are becoming less for good. If you look at the Turkish Cypriots in the streets they are like the Red Indians, who are becoming extinct. Those who leave are a lot. The Cypriots are going, the Turkish are coming' The Policy of "A Turk leaves, a Turk comes", is going on at a more intense rate. However, it seems that our political parties do not have this vital subject in their agenda. Nobody worries about this subject. We do not think either that the new immigration law will prevent the flow of the Turkish citizens here. If this law stays, it is in the direction to legitimise those who enter with the identity card and those who can be found among us as fugitives. With this law, what is being discussed is to make at least 35 thousand more persons TRNC citizens. It is a pity that for the sake of the "yes" in the referendum, even our more radical left parties defended the Turkish Citizens and they gave them the name "New Cypriots". As regards the application made by the Patriotic Unity Movement, prior to the referendum for this issue to the European Court for Human Rights, nothing was heard. In the near future a population census must take place in north Cyprus and the picture must be cleared. However, who is going to do this? Until today, the real numbers of the Turkish Citizens of the island has never been presented to out community. There is no transparency as regards this subject. Besides, there will be no need to do this, when those of us to remain here will be counted on one´s fingers.
