[01] The Turkish military-dominated NSC discussed the political developments

The statement issued by the NSC Secretariat General is as follows: "The NSC held its routine meeting on 24 June 2004. Security and public order issues and reactionary and secessionist activities throughout the country were reviewed at our meeting. The recent developments in Cyprus and Iraq were assessed. Moreover, the NSC was briefed on the NATO summit to be held in Istanbul."

The meeting lasted about five and half hours.

[02] Statements by Serdar Denktas; Sudan's ambassador to Ankara will be visiting the occupied areas

Addressing the "assembly" of the regime and responding to criticism by Tahsin Ertugruloglu, so-called MP of the National Unity Party (NUP), Mr Denktas noted that after the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sierra Leone to the occupied areas of Cyprus, tomorrow another foreign diplomat, Sudan's ambassador to Ankara will be paying an illegal visit to occupied Cyprus. The ambassador will be escorted by the General Secretary of the OIC.

Mr Denktas said that not undertaking any initiative for the recognition of the Turkish Cypriot illegal state in occupied northern Cyprus as long as there are the relevant decisions of the UN Security Council was a policy which the Turkish Cypriots determined together with Turkey. He added, however, that in case the international community does not keep its word regarding putting an end to the "isolation" of the Turkish Cypriots, then the Turkish Cypriots will struggle for recognition.

[03] Erdogan: The importance and the value of the step made at the OIC will be realized much better within the next months

In his last night "Address to the People", Mr Erdogan supported: "The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which at the previous OIC meetings was accepted with the name Turkish Moslem Community of Cyprus, at the Istanbul Summit was registered as Turkish Cypriot State".

Mr Erdogan noted that this step was very important for the future of Ankara´s regime in occupied Cyprus and that its importance and value will be realized within the next few months.

[04] Talat will be meeting Jack Straw; The representative of the pseudostate in London visited the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Noting that the climate for the Turkish Cypriots changed in London after the 24 April referendum in Cyprus, Mr Incirli says also that last Wednesday Namik Korhan, the representative of the pseudostate in London, "officially" visited the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

[05] The founder and President of the Crans Montana Forum Jean-Paul Carteron said that the pseudostate must definitely be recognised

In a written statement released in the web-site of the Crans Montana Forum and World Monaco Summit, Mr Carteron referred to the results of the referenda in Cyprus and alleged that the Greek Cypriot side preferred the permanent division of the island. "We must draw a conclusion out of these results", he claimed and went on saying: "The 'two Cyprus', which the Greek Cypriots never accepted, certainly exist from now on". He added that there is no longer a need to continue the 'embargoes' and isolation 'imposed' on the occupied by Turkey areas of Cyprus.

Mr Carteron also said that Rauf Denktas and the so-called Minister of Economy and Tourism of the occupation regime Ayse Donmezer, who are currently in Switzerland for the forum, will deliver a speech on the Cyprus issue at the forum.

[07] The Turks continue to press the US through the media in view of President Bush´s visit to Ankara for moves that will facilitate their secessionist policies against Cyprus

"The success of US President George W. Bush's visit to Ankara on 27 June has been made contingent on a "satisfactory" initiative from Washington on the Cyprus issue.

Feeling uneasy because of the indefinite postponement of an operation against the PKK [Workers' Party of Kurdistan] presence in Iraq and considering that the United States has not fulfilled a major portion of the promises it made on this issue, Ankara has doubts as to whether any progress may be made either on the PKK or in the field of economic cooperation during Bush's visit. The Turkish diplomats emphasize that the only issue that could be projected to the Turkish people as a success would be "a concrete step toward the Turkish Cypriots." Briefing the journalists in Washington, a Turkish official made an assessment of the prospect of success of Bush's visit and said: "It could prove to be a success if concrete steps, particularly on the Cyprus issue, are announced. I do not think anything positive will come out on the PKK issue during this visit. Progress on economic issues too is very difficult."

The same source stressed that the United States, in the latest stage, was able to honor only one of the promises it made to Ankara on the PKK existence in the Iraq, which was: "Have the EU accept the KONGRA-GEL [People's Congress of Kurdistan] as terrorist." Pointing out that the confrontations had increased at least to some extent following the PKK's announced decision to unilaterally terminate the cease-fire, the official said: "We should assume that a part of the upward trend is related to the PKK presence in Northern Iraq."

Ankara is of the opinion that the United States is a country that "acts positively most" toward the `TRNC´. The official recalled that, despite this fact, the initiatives in the form of visa facilities and diplomatic contacts until now have been on "gesture" level, and said Ankara expected more effective steps now.

Turkey's new policy on Iraq projects a stand that says "yes to federation," but continues to view with suspicion a federation based on ethnic background. In light of its experiences, Ankara has communicated to both the United States and its Iraqi interlocutors that it wants to see a strong central administration in Iraq, but would still "respect the Iraqi people's preference for a federal structure." Turkish sources emphasize that they do not think any problems would be experienced on this issue during Bush's visit. Washington is aware, though, that Ankara will have a negative view of a federal setup that would be shaped on an ethnic foundation."

[08] Fatih Altayli: "Our recognition of Cyprus is for the EU security"

The EU member states have started exerting pressure on Turkey to recognize EU member Cyprus, while on the other hand they do not impose any embargo on the Greek Cypriot side which refused the Annan Plan and they do not move towards putting an end to the Turkish Cypriots isolation.

The most important reason behind these pressures are "military", because Turkey's non-recognition of Cyprus creates a very complex situation from the military point of view.

Turkey is an important member of the NATO. And from the EU point of view the NATO is very important.

However, Turkey's non-recognition of Cyprus is creating very serious problems, as regards NATO- EU relations. The EU is unable to attend NATO meetings together with Cyprus. Turkey is not sitting around a negotiation table on issues that include Cyprus.

And this creates a very serious discomfort in Europe's security. The EU is searching solutions outside of the NATO and trying to establish other structures but it is unsuccessful in this. As a result of this it is forcing Turkey to recognize Cyprus.

The problem is not Cyprus' opening of embassy in Turkey or establishing the trade relations with a small volume as a result of Customs' Union recognition.

The problem is a wider security issue."
