[02] The leader of the Republican Turkish Party on implications of ^Óelection^Ô results

Ankara Anatolia (14.12.03) reported from occupied Nicosia that Mr Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) in a press conference he held in his party headquarters on Sunday, said that the Turkish Cypriots showed that they preferred peace, solution to the Cyprus issue and EU membership with the results of the election.

Talat said that they would make an evaluation in accordance with this demand of the Turkish Cypriots and they would work to reach these goals in case they came to power. He added that they would struggle to change the order that existed so far.

Mr Talat also said that they would make the necessary arrangements to make the ^Ógovernment^Ô carry on the Cyprus talks instead of Rauf Denktas as they declared before ^Óelections^Ô.

Responding to a question on cooperation with Turkey, Talat said they would expect the support of Turkey as well in case they came to power because the solution of the Cyprus question was an inseparable part of Turkey's EU membership.

[03]Eroglu speaks about new ^Óelections^Ô in three months

Ankara Anatolia (14.12.03) reported from occupied Nicosia that Mr Dervis Eroglu, so-called Prime Minister of the occupation regime, said on Sunday that the ^Óelections^Ô could be renewed in case none of the parties could form a ^Ógovernment^Ô.

Eroglu told reporters in his party headquarters that what was important at this point is who would be given authority to form a ^Ógovernment^Ô by Rauf Denktas and political parties should exchange views in this scope.

Recalling that the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) and the Peace and Democracy Movement (PDM) had a protocol between themselves not to make a coalition with the ruling parties, Eroglu said that ''something could happen'' following the final results of the ^Óelections^Ô.

Underlining that the ^ÓConstitution^Ô foresaw repetition of election in case none of the parties could form a ^Ógovernment^Ô in three months, Eroglu said: ^ÓThat's why, the election could be renewed in three months.^Ô

[04] Akinci stated that if the Republican Turkish Party and the Peace and Democracy Movement get enough seats in the ^Óparliament^Ô they will stick

to the cooperation protocol they have signed Turkish Cypriot daily ORTAM newspaper (15.12.03) reports that Mr Mustafa Akinci, the chairman of the Peace and Democracy Movement (PDM) evaluated late last night the developments following the ^Óelections^Ô, before the final results of the election race were known.

Mr Akinci stated that if the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) and the PDM get enough seats in the pseudoparliament, ^Óthat is to say 26 or more^Ô, as he said, the two parties will abide by the cooperation protocol they have signed and form a coalition ^Ógovernment^Ô. ^ÓOn PDM´s behalf there is no question regarding this issue. Because our goal is clear and we shall show the necessary determination towards this common goal^Ô, stated Mr Akinci.

[05] Statement by the Turkish Prime Minister after the preliminary results of the voting in occupied Cyprus were known

Ankara Anatolia (14.12.03) reported from Istanbul that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that the result that would come out from the ^Óparliamentary elections^Ô in occupied Cyprus would be a result that would be respected by them.

Responding a question on how he evaluated the results of the ^Óelections^Ô and the row between ruling and opposition parties that occurred during the elections, Erdogan told reporters: ''The results so far show that only 60 percent of the votes have been counted. It is not correct to make an evaluation before definite results are taken. But, as I said before, the result that will come out will be a result that will be respected by us. But occurrence of ugly incidents do not conform with democracy. It is not possible to accept this. And accepting the result that will come out is an expression of respect attributed by the sides to democracy.''

When a reporter recalled that the results were almost on a par and asked its possible influence on Turkey's policy, Erdogan said: ''Public polls were giving the signs of this. Our earnest desire is that Cypriots accept the results without giving an opportunity for any conflict. May it conduce to goodness!''

[06] The Turkish Foreign Minister said the winner of the so-called elections cannot act independently of Turkey

Illegal Bayrak television (14.12.03) broadcast that speaking on Kanal-D's "One to One" program, the Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Abdullah Gul, made important statements on the Cyprus issue.

Gul declared that the world will see Turkey's facilitating effect on a solution to be reached in the Cyprus problem, adding that this does not, however, mean that Turkey would accept just anything placed before it.

Gul said that no matter who wins the election [in northern Cyprus] he cannot do anything independently of Turkey. Noting that the final word on the Cyprus problem rests with the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Gul advised everybody to be aware of this fact.

[07] How the Turkish Cypriot newspapers covered yesterday^Òs so-called ^Óelection^Ô results
