[01] Excerpt on Cyprus from an interview with CUMHURIYET by Deniz Baykal

Istanbul CUMHURIYET newspaper (27.11.03) publishes an interview with the leader of the Republican People´s Party (RPP), Mr Deniz Baykal.

Following is the excerpt on Cyprus under the subtitle: ^ÓThe government should not look at Cyprus from Brussels^Ô.

Question: The twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the ^ÓTRNC^Ô been celebrated. And you took part. How did you find the Prime Minister's statements?

Answer: The JDP government has always looked at Cyprus from Brussels. They have to abandon this.

Erdogan's speech was in fact appropriate to the twentieth anniversary of the ^ÓTRNC^Ô. I hope that this approach of his will not change...

Question: Are you worried on that score?

Answer: Are they not in fact doing this on various fundamental issues? You can see that they speak differently, according to the time and the place. But foreign policy does not tolerate this type of zigzagging.

Question: How do you approach the elections that will be held in Cyprus on 14 December?

Answer: These elections are of vital importance for Cyprus. But we see that countries that have said that there must be no intervention from outside are going even into the villages and trying to influence the people's will. They should not be doing this.

[02] The cost of the ^Óelections^Ô will be 1,5 trillion Turkish liras

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (28.11.03) reports that the so-called Supreme Election Board of the pseudostate announced that the amount of 1.5 trillion Turkish liras will be needed for the forthcoming December ^Óelections^Ô of the pseudostate.

As the paper writes, the money will be used for paying the salaries of the persons who will be on duty the day of the ^Óelections^Ô, for the equipment that is going to be used and the printing of the ballots. It was also announced that around two thousand persons will be on duty the day of the elections; 663 persons will be at the Ballot-box Committees, 189 persons will be at the Supreme Election Board and the District Election Committees and 100 persons will be at the ballot-box election lists.

[03] The Avrasia International Movement was established

Turkish Cypriot daily VATAN newspaper (28.11.03) reports that on 20 November 2003 the founding conference of the Avrasia International Movement was held in Moscow. The conference decided to establish the Avrasia International Movement and elected its Supreme Council.

Turkey was represented in the conference by a delegation of the Labour Party (LP) whose leader, Mr Dogu Perincek, was elected to the Supreme Council.

Mr Alexandr Dugin, President of the Russia Avrasia Party was elected Chairman of the Council while the following were elected as members: Mr Victor Kalyujniy, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation and Special Representative of President Putin, Mr Mihail Margelov, Chairman of the International Relations Committee of the Russian Federation Council (upper Chamber), Mufti Talgat Tacuddin of Russian and European Muslim Communities, Mr Albert Cevnisev, Ambassador of the Russian Federation and former Ambassador to Turkey, and Mr Aleksey Jafyarov, Director of the Office for Political Parties and Public Associations of the Ministry of Justice.

The Labour Party delegation, at the end of the conference, held contacts and exchanged views with senior members of the Russian state and high ranking experienced diplomats. Among them were Foreign Ministry Transcaucasian and Middle East Desk former Director and now National Security Council member, Mr Anatoli Zaitsev, and the former Ambassador to Turkey Mr Albert Cernisev.

The delegation held a two-hour meting with Mr Alexandr Dugin and the Chairman of the Organizing committee of the International Avrasia Movement, Mr Pavel Zarufulin.

The paper also reports that the Turkish Labour Party delegation got the following impressions from its contacts with persons who are close or within the Russian state: ^ÓThe Russian state believes that Cyprus and Northern Iraq have become a single front. The puppet state in Northern Iraq is a major threat to Avrasia and this threat could only be rendered ineffective by establishing a regional alliance where Russia and Turkey will be included.

On this issue Turkey´s resistance carries major importance and Turkey´s weakening position in Cyprus could weaken the resistance in Northern Iraq as well.

Some National Security Council members, expressing their personal views, said that the unification of Cyprus through the pressure of the United States will not be beneficial for Russia and Avrasia.

The Labour Party has noted that it is important that these views should be made known in Turkey and the `TRNC´. Following this and prior to the `elections´ in the `TRNC´ on 14 December, it was agreed that certain personalities will be coming to Turkey^Ô.

[04] The first meeting for the first Olympic Games of the Turkic Countries will take place in the pseudostate

Turkish Cypriot daily ORTAM newspaper (28.11.03) reports that the first meeting as regards the first Olympic Games of the Turkic Countries will take place in the pseudostate next January.

The decision was taken during the meeting of the Turkic Countries and Communities Union which took place under the presidency of Mr Kayrat Zakiryanov, the chairman of the academy of Tourism and Sport of Kazakhstan and Mr Eyup Zafer Gokbilen, chairman of the Eurasia Taekwondo Federation. During the meeting, in which 45 persons participated, it was decided that the first meeting of the General Committee of the Turkic Countries and Communities Sport Union will take place in occupied Cyprus in January.

As the paper writes, Mr Gokbilen stated that the state and the government of Kazakhstan are holding continuously sport meetings so that the pseudostate is opened to the world sport arena. In addition Mr Sefik Tukiyev, the Minister of Sports of Kazakhstan stated that his country is ready for any kind of cooperation regarding the field of sports with the pseudostate.

[05] Cuneyt Ulsever : ^ÓNorth Cyprus, which should be a paradise, was turned into hell because of the Denktas mentality^Ô

Turkish daily HURRIYET newspaper columnist Cuneyt Ulsever, in an exclusive statement to local Turkish Cypriot newspaper YENIDUZEN (28.11.03), strongly criticized the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas for his stance as regards the Cyprus problem.

Commenting on Denktas^Ò statement that ^Ñif the opposition wins the elections, I will leave and go to Anatolia and taking the Anatolian people with me I will start the struggle anew^Ò, Ulsever said that this statement by Denktas is nonsense: ^ÓDenktas is not a person from Anatolia, he is the man of Cyprus. If he asks Anatolia, 70 % of it wants EU membership. So, on what basis is he saying this? On top of it how can a president come up and say: ^ÑIf the opposition wins I will leave Cyprus?^Ò From where did he get the right to say such a thing? At the base of these statements lie the desire to make the people to fear. Denktas is trying to paint a bleak future to the people in Cyprus. This is Denktas^Ò plot .There is only one plan in Denktas^Ò mind and that is non-solution. He is aware that if the Cyprus problem is solved he will suffer personal loss^Ô

Ulsever went on and said: ^ÓIf the Turkish people had the chance to vote on the Annan plan , or hold a referendum , the crushing majority would have been casting a ^Ñyes^Ò vote , because people living in the Republic of Turkey want nothing to preclude their EU dream^Ô.

Subtitle: He turned north Cyprus into hell

Ulsever goes on and says: ^ÓPer capita income in north Cyprus is between 2,700-2,800 dollars and this is comparable to the most backward provinces of Turkey where they lack the necessary natural resources to develop. Can you imagine , Cyprus a paradise, which has all the natural beauty and natural conditions, is turned into a Hell by Denktas and his team^Ô.
