[01] The Turkish Cypriot leader was honoured by the Istanbul Press Union. He stressed that he will never sign the withdrawal of Turkey from Cyprus

In a speech after receiving his award, Mr Rauf Denktas said: "I am told that the EU would protect us. They say, do not worry because the EU is a powerful institution that respects the supremacy of the law. If so, why does the EU disregard our equal sovereignty and founding partnership, Turkey's guarantorship, and the permanent stationing of the latter's troops as stipulated under the 1960 agreements? What sort of supremacy of law is this?"

Noting that he is described as the most intransigent man, Mr Denktas said: "What should I do to become a compromising man, a nice diplomat, and a good statesman? I must sign Turkey's withdrawal from Cyprus. But I say that I have no such pen, I have no such hand, I have no such heart."

[02] VOLKAN publishes a new public opinion poll

Asked which party they will vote for in the "elections" the participants in the poll answered as follows:

National Unity Party (NUP)           32 %
Republican Turkish Party (RTP)       21.6 %
Democratic Party (DP)                15.7 %
Peace and Democracy Movement (PDM)    6.1 %
Solution and EU Party  (SEUP)         2.3 %
Nationalist Peace Party (NPP)         1.2 %
Cyprus Justice Party (CJP)            0.4 %
Split ticket                          7 %
Undecided                            12.6 %

The paper notes that in this poll the NUP-DP "coalition government" increases its total votes to 48.3 %, as compared to the results of the VERSO poll published in VOLKAN on 7 November, where only the 42.9 % of the participants said that they would vote for one of the two above-mentioned parties.

Meanwhile, the votes of RTP and PDM decrease from 24.1 % and 8.3 % to 21.6 % and 6.1 % respectively. The other opposition party, SEUP preserved the same percentage. The total votes of the opposition, which in the previous poll had been 34.7 %, have now decreased to 30 %.

[03] Statements by Professor Hyllannd to KIBRIS newspaper

Mr Hyllannd noted that they met with "officials" of the so-called Supreme Electoral Council, the "Interior Ministry" and with the leaders of the parties, which are participating in the "elections" in order to get information regarding the "procedure of the elections".

Mr Hyllannd said in their work that they were going to apply the criteria accepted by the Organization for the Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in order to show the exact and real picture of the "elections". He also noted that their aim was to establish whether or not the "elections" are conducted in a democratic manner.

[04] A significant archaeological site dated three thousand years ago was discovered between the occupied villages of Komi Kepir and Livadia

As the paper writes during archaeological excavations in the area which lasted for two months, two ancient tombs were discovered. The first tomb, which is dating back to the Iron Age, is 15 meters long. The second tomb, which is dating back to the Protogeometrik Period, had inside a male skeleton and death objects like javelins with bronze ends, bronze needles and sixteen different ceramic objects decorated with red and brown colours.

During the excavations a canal and some wells were discovered along with some ceramic objects, dating back to the Bronze Age. Moreover, inside the well some game's stones were discovered of a game which was very popular in ancient Egypt and is considered to be the ancestor of the nowadays draughts game.
