[01] The Turkish Cypriot leader's trip to Malaysia has been postponed

On Saturday Mr. Denktas will attend the opening ceremony for the new academic year of Marmara University and on Monday he will fly to Malaysia from Istanbul for the meeting of the Islamic Conference Organization.

Mr. Denktas will return to the occupied areas on the 18th October, while on the 20th he will leave for Brussels.

On 31st October the Turkish Cypriot leader will again fly for Istanbul.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot KIBRIS newspaper (10/10/03) publishes statements made by Denktas' adviser, Mr. Ergun Olgun, to the effect that 'due to heavy official work, Mr. Denktas' long contacts abroad have been postponed'.

'he paper adds that Mr. Ergun Olgun and the so-called Director of Political Affairs in Denktas' office, Mr Sakir Alemdar together with Mr. Tahsin Ertugruloglu, so-called Foreign Affairs and Defence Minister, who already left for Malaysia, will attend the Islamic Conference Organization meeting.

The paper makes no reference to the planned visit of Mr. Denktas to Brussels but it concludes that at 7 p.m. this evening he is leaving for Istanbul for tomorrow's ceremony at Marmara University and will return to the occupied part of Cyprus on Sunday evening.

As the paper writes, Mr Cevikel called on the three men who, as he said 'want the continuation of the status quo' in occupied Cyprus, as well as their first degree relatives, to declare to the public all the movable and immovable property they own 'inside and outside of the country'.

Mr Cevikel also said that after the December 'elections' the only obstacle standing in the way of those who want solution, democracy and the prevalence of law will be lifted.

[03] Reactions against granting 'citizenship' to illegal Turkish settlers; 17 trade unions are preparing for general strike

The members of KTAMS working at the above-mentioned 'Department' went on strike claiming that they are 'under psychological and physical pressure', because of the many applications during the last weeks from people from Turkey who want to get the 'citizenship' of the occupation regime.

The paper writes that this was a strike only to warn the regime and added that representatives of seventeen trade unions met yesterday and evaluated the situation in the Turkish Cypriot community in general. KIBRIS notes that the trade unions are preparing for a general strike.

In statements during the strike KTMAS' chairman, Mr Ali Seylani said that for days the workers at the 'Aliens Department' are under heavy psychological and physical pressure and that they are forced to become collaborators to the crime committed by the pseudogovernment. Mr Seylani noted that they went on strike in order to prevent all these and not to be collaborators to the illegal practices applied by the regime.

Mr Seylani noted that a group of people who wanted to get the 'citizenship' went to the Turkish 'embassy' in order to complain about the strike. This shows how the pseudostate is administrated, he added.

Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), Mustafa Akinci, leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement (PDM) and Ali Erel, leader of the Solution and European Union Party (SEUP) visited the strikers heading delegations of their parties.

In his statements, Mehmet Ali Talat said that the pseudogovernment is committing a crime, which will not remain unpunished. Mr Talat argued that the supporters of the status quo know that they will lose the 'elections' and that is why they are resorting to every method to avoid this.

Furthermore, Mr Akinci called on Turkey's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah Gul and the government in Ankara to leave the Turkish Cypriots alone to express their political will freely and not to violate their right for referendum, just like they did in March.

Mr Erel said that the strike had been caused because the pseudogovernment is trying to interfere into the 'elections' by gathering the votes of the people who were granted the 'citizenship'.

Talking yesterday on KIBRIS FM radio, Mr Albayrak said that he had personally taken to the 'council of ministers' cases of people who are 'third generation Cypriots' and added that except from these cases he knew nothing about 'citizenship' given by the 'council' to other persons.

Mr Albayrak said also that the occupation regime authorized Mustafa Kiracioglu, advisor at his 'ministry', to sign the applications for 'citizenship', in the place of Metin Fahrioglu, Director of the 'Aliens Department', who is confined to bed at the hospital.
