[01] Denktas says they might open the closed Varosha area to both Greek and Turkish Cypriots

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (17.07.03) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, said yesterday that they might open the occupied city of Varosha to both Greeks and Turks, who could live there under the occupation regime^Òs rule.

Mr Denktas noted that they could do this in case the Greek Cypriot side rejects their recent proposal regarding the opening of Varosha and the reopening of the Nicosia International Airport.

^ÓThis is my personal opinion, it is not finalized yet. We shall decide after discussing the issue with our colleagues^Ô, Denktas said. Asked whether or not they would open Varosha for the Greeks or for the Turks, Denktas answered: ^ÓWe shall open it to whoever comes, to everybody^Ô. When he was asked if this meant that they would invite the Greek Cypriots to go and live under Turkish Cypriot administration in Varosha, Denktas replied: ^ÓYes, since their government does not accept (Varosha) to be opened under the UN control, let the Greek Cypriots who wish to come to do so, take their building, repair it and settle there^Ô.

When reminded that in the past the UN Security Council opposed to the opening of Varosha, Mr Denktas said: ^ÓI have a message to them. When this place is ruined, will they take the responsibility for this and pay the cost?^Ô

Mr Denktas repeated his allegations that the majority of the buildings in Varosha belongs to the Turkish Cypriot religious foundation (Evkaf) and argued that the area could not be kept closed any more.

^ÓThis is my opinion, we have not yet taken a decision. However the area could not remain closed. I am trying to explain that we have an alternative on every issue and we do not have to humiliate ourselves before everything that others impose^Ô, Denktas concluded.

[02] The Turkish Cypriot leader reacted to criticism by the opposition for his proposal on the Nicosia airport

Illegal Bayrak television (16.07.03) broadcast that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, has reacted to a report in some of the Turkish Cypriot newspapers that his recent proposals to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan failed to refer to the Varosha sector of Famagusta.

In a statement to the press, Mr Denktas said that he has been criticized for allegedly not mentioning Varosha in the letter he conveyed to Kofi Annan. He said he was accused of bluffing.

Mr Denktas´ statement is the following: ^ÓOur proposal has not upset the Greek Cypriots but it has angered some of the opposition leaders among us. That is because they are upset by the initiatives that are aimed at creating a level and equal basis for talks and reconciliation. They call for a solution that will satisfy them. Claims have been made that the letter we conveyed to the UN Secretary-General failed to refer to Varosha. They have published articles in the press and made many statements to that effect. I am surprised. Naturally, as far as the Turkish Cypriot side is concerned, my letter to the UN Secretary-General focused on the Nicosia Airport and proposed the opening of Varosha in return. It was based on the 1994 formula. That is outlined in the letter. It seems that they maintain their campaign to mislead the people, either because they are unaware of the facts or because they deliberately want to act in that way. That is shameful.^Ô

[03] Turkey claims it is uneasy with Cyprus^Ò initiative regarding the use of its installations by the EU army

According to local Turkish Cypriot KIBRIS newspaper (17.07.03), Turkey has informed the EU about the uneasiness it has felt regarding Cyprus^Ò proposal submitted to the EU on the ^ÓEU Basic Objectives^Ô . Cyprus government^Òs views that it is ready to open its sea and airports and the installations to the EU armed forces use , was put forward as proposals during negotiations held between Cyprus and EU officials.

KIBRIS reports that the Turkish reaction has been conveyed, in a letter, to Javier Solana, the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security policies .The issue was also taken up at Turkey ^ÖEU meetings.

In the letter, Turkey repeated its known views as regards the Cyprus problem and Cyprus^Ò EU accession and claimed that ^Óin the light of these realities if the Greek Cypriot proposals gain recognition then Turkey would not accept the results derived from this.^Ô

[04] Mehmet Agar talks of a ^Ójust and honourable^Ô peace in Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily VOLKAN newspaper (17.07.03) reports that Turkish mainland True Path Party^Òs (TPP) leader Mehmet Agar supported yesterday that a ^Ójust and honourable^Ô peace should be reached in Cyprus.

Speaking after a meeting with a delegation of the Turkish Cypriot ^ÓFighters ^Ò^Ô Association, which is visiting Turkey, Mr Agar reiterated that Cyprus is ^ÓTurkey^Òs national cause^Ô and alleged that the precondition for reaching a solution in the island is the sovereignty, the equality of the two communities and the guarantees of Turkey.

^ÓPeace must be honourable and just. It should not harm the national cause of a country like Turkey^Ô, claimed Mr Agar.

[05] Abdullatif Sener will represent Turkey in the ^Ócelebration^Ô of the Turkish invasion

Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper YENI CIZGI (17.07.03) reports that Mr Abdullatif Sener, deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State responsible for Cyprus Affairs, will represent Turkey in the ^Ócelebration^Ô of the Turkish invasion on the 20th of July.

The paper writes that the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan will not represent Turkey, as it was reported yesterday. The report was denied by Mr Rauf Denktas, who said that neither himself nor the ^ÓTurkish Embassy^Ô in occupied Cyprus had any knowledge that Mr Erdogan would visit the pseudostate.

In addition, as Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper KIBRIS (17.07.03) reports, quests from 18 countries are expected to visit occupied Cyprus in order to participate in the ^Ócelebration^Ô of the Turkish invasion. The names of the countries of those quests are not mentioned.

[06] A Turkish Cypriot is planning sue the Republic of Cyprus

According to KIBRISLI (17.07.03), the Turkish Cypriot lady Gulsevin Sah, who was denied entrance in Cyprus at Larnaca airport, is determined to sue the Republic of Cyprus at the European Court of Human Rights.

Mrs Gulsevin Sah, after meeting the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas, noting that she is determined to sue the Republic of Cyprus, said: ^ÓBecause they were playing with my pride and the pride of my children. I will never forget the pain and the fear that my children had to get through. This behaviour is brutal and they can^Òt do it to the people.^Ô

Gulsevin Sah also added that before her departure for Larnaca she had asked and was reassured that she will not have any problem.

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Dnektas, who met Mrs Sah her father and her husband, said that such an insult should not remain unanswered.

[07] Talat: ^ÓThe status quo is not compatible with the international law^Ô

YENIDUZEN (17.07.03) reports that the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), Mr Mehmet Ali Talat, during his visit to the occupied villages of Zodia and Kapoudi for his ^Óelection^Ô campaign, said that the existing status quo is not compatible with the international law. He also added that at the point reached there are two alternatives. The first one is a solution within the framework of the Annan plan and the second one is to return to the period before 1960.

[08] A new platform for Solidarity and Reconciliation was established

Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper KIBRIS (17.07.03) reports that a new platform under the name ^ÓNew Solidarity and Reconciliation Platform^Ô (NSRP) was established in occupied Cyprus. The formation of the Platform was announced at a press conference yesterday.

Speaking about the aims and goals of the platform, Mr Mimhan Sagiroglu, the spokesman of the NSRP, said that according to the platform, Turkish guarantees and bizonallity are essential for the talks between the two sides in Cyprus. He also said that in order for a solution to be achieved for Cyprus the cooperation of the ^Ómother country^Ô and all the political parties and organizations is needed. The NSRP also supports the EU accession with the solution of the Cyprus problem and an honourable agreement.
