[01] Denktas: EU train will hit the wall formed by the 1960 agreements

According to KIBRIS (07.08.02) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has stressed that the rights of the Turkish Cypriots and their existence on the island were founded upon the balance between Turkey and Greece and added: "Our cause is to exert joint efforts to increase the value of our shares." Explaining that Turkey will display goodwill and wait until the last moment for a solution, Denktas added: "However, it will do the necessary if there is no agreement in order to prevent Cyprus from becoming an EU member before Turkey," during a meeting with a delegation of the Turkish Cypriot Young Businessmen.

Commenting on the deadlock in the indirect talks, which continued for five rounds, Denktas added that the UN secretary general's format presented at the end of the fifth round sought to turn the Turkish Cypriots into shareholders, not owners of deeds.

Referring to the EU issue, Denktas added: "There are those who lament that the EU train was missed. I say to them that it is the Greek Cypriot train that is missed, not the Cyprus train. The Greek Cypriots seek to become EU members in order to oust Turkey and obtain a victory for Helenization". Explaining that a joint policy was being pursued with Turkey, Denktas added that Turkey will display goodwill and wait until the end to see whether there is an agreement. If there is no agreement, however, Denktas continued, everything necessary will be done to prevent Cyprus' membership in the EU before Turkey. Denktas stressed that the EU train will hit the wall formed by the 1960 agreements.

Explaining that he had asked to hold face-to-face meetings with Clerides to prevent a crisis, Denktas pointed out that the direct talks were launched without any preconditions. Noting that this meant that there would be no conditions laid on the negotiation table including the UN Security Council [UNSC] resolutions, Denktas recalled that the UNSC resolutions were placed on the agenda because Alvaro de Soto, UN secretary general's special envoy in Cyprus, went to New York and reported on the meetings.

Stressing that the Cyprus issue was not resolved for 39 years because of the UNSC resolutions, which recognize Greek Cypriots as the legitimate government of Cyprus, Denktas continued: Consequently, the reason why we sought to hold direct talks is invalidated. Noting that the aim of the Greek Cypriots should be understood well if they agree to Turkey's guarantee, Denktas said: "At this stage, the Greek Cypriots realize very well that Turkey's influence will diminish once they will join the EU. This is nothing but a ploy." Explaining that the Greek Cypriots can ask to return to their homes by filing suits against the articles of the partnership agreement, Denktas added that these issues had already been taken up with the EU officials.

Denktas further said that Republican Turkish Party leader Mehmet Ali Talat sought fame by picking on him. Explaining that several Greek Cypriot officials did not even respond to his statements, Denktas added that, however, the Greek Cypriot officials responded to his statements as well as Turkey's. Denktas continued by explaining that the headline 'Rights to Turkey, trap for us' in YENI DUZEN reflects his views exactly.

Explaining that Turkey, as a sovereign state, can become an EU member, Denktas said: "EU membership is possible if the sovereignty of the `Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus/ and the exchange of properties as well as, not rendering ineffectual the guarantee system is accepted".

In his address, Denktas asked the political parties in Cyprus why they did not raise their voices against the injustices against the Turkish Cypriots and the embargoes. Stressing that the Turkish Cypriots should decide what they want, Denktas said that a Turkish deed is valid and continued: The remaining belongs to the Cyprus government and the other deeds belong to the Greek Cypriots. There are efforts to bring you to that stage.

[02] RTP leader Talat: "Denktas does not represent our people who favour solution and EU"

According to KIBRIS (08.0702) the leader of the Republican Turkish Party, RTP, Mehmet Ali Talat answering accusations directed against him by the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas, said that Denktas does not represent the Turkish Cypriot people who long for settlement and EU membership. He accused Denktas of contributing, with his wrong policies to the process of entering into the EU after the Greek Cypriots. Talat went on and said:'we support entering EU together with the Greek Cypriots and not after the Greek Cypriots'

Saying that Turkey's approval of the EU harmonization bill made Denktas '' cry'' Talat said that Denktas' only objective is to annex the north of Cyprus to Turkey. Referring to Turkey's scraping of capital punishment in order to pave the way to EU accession Talat said:' Cyprus problem is more important than abolishing the capital punishment, because, abolishing death penalty is a minimum political criterion to start accession negotiations, on the other hand the Cyprus problem is an absolute must, it is related to the definition of the EU. The EU is a security community. A structure is conceived, a Europe is conceived where the possibility of breaking of a war is excluded. So if Turkey enters into the EU with the Cyprus problem then this very basic principle is being violated.''

When asked to comment on ''the Turkish Cypriots sovereignty'' Talat said that his understanding of sovereignty is if the Turkish Cypriots start governing themselves. `Today we are unable to exercise the right to govern ourselves' Talat declared.

''The difference between the Turkish Cypriots and Denktas," Talat said, "stems from the fact that Denktas does not represent the Turkish Cypriots, he is not advocating the interests of the Turkish Cypriots, and since the Turkish Cypriots are not free to choose their leaders, people like Denktas still rule the Turkish Cypriots''

[03] KIBRIS: New grouping on the right

According to KIBRIS (07.08.02), the two so-called deputies Ertugrul Hasipoglu and Hasan Hasipoglu, who resigned from their party, National Unity Party NUP held a press conference yesterday and they explained why they tendered their resignations.

They directed strong criticism against the NUP leader Dervis Eroglu and urged their other colleagues who are unhappy with Eroglu to follow their steps and resign from the party. They said that there was no more intra party democracy in the NUP.

Ertugrul Hasipoglu urged the Turkish Cypriot to support their action.

[04] Turkish Cypriot Civil organizations will announce a joint declaration on the Cyprus problem

According to AFRIKA (07.08.02) the Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Trade, Mr Ali Erel, in a statement made yesterday, said that around 70 civil social organizations, which have a total of 35,000 members, have signed a joint declaration about the solution of the Cyprus problem and Cyprus/ accession into EU.

It is reported that a press conference will be held on August 9, where their "joint vision" will be announced to the public.

[05] The occupation regime prevent youths to cross to the free areas

YENIDUZEN (07.08.02) reports that the Youth Branch of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) made a protest against the so-called Ministry of Foreign Affairs because they cancelled without any justification at the last minute on the 4th of August their permission to cross into the free areas.
