[01] Denktas calls on the participants of an international religious meeting to support and recognize the pseudostate

KIBRIS (16.04.02) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has called on the Islamic countries to exert efforts towards "rectifying the injustice" allegedly being committed against the Turkish Cypriots.

Addressing yesterday the 5th meeting of the Eurasia Islam Convention Organization organized by Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate at the Salamis Bay Conti resort Hotel in the occupied area of Famagusta, Mr Denktas asked the religious leaders to support the pseudostate and described as "very important for the Turkish Cypriots" the fact that the Convention is being held in the pseudostate.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Mr Denktas alleged that the Greek Cypriots ignore the presence of the Turkish Cypriots and try to prevent them from defending their "just cause and from having their voice heard".

Mr Denktas claimed that "the Turkish Cypriots, who have for years been trying to surmount this wall in a manner that is characteristic of Muslims, view this Convention being held in the TRNC as a historic event".

Furthermore, the Turkish Cypriot leader proposed the sixth meeting of the Convention to be held in occupied Nicosia and expressed the hope that the Cyprus issue will, one way or another, be resolved by then. Explaining the reason for his saying that the issue will be solved one way or another, Mr Denktas said that for peace to be achieved both parties should aim at and advance towards the same goal.

Among other things, Mr Denktas alleged also that the message, which the Greek Cypriots have been conveying to the Islamic World "has deceived" many Islamic states and governments. This is the reason, he argued, for which the Turkish Cypriots "have not received any de facto support" from their Islamic brethren despite the fact that many Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) decisions "conveyed messages of support to the Turkish Cypriots".

Furthermore, Mr Denktas admitted that the Turkish Cypriots are a minority in Cyprus but tried to misinform the participants in the meeting, by saying that the Republic of Cyprus was established in 1960 by two peoples. He claimed the following on the issue: "The Turkish Cypriots are in the minority in Cyprus, but they are one of the founding partners of the Republic of Cyprus. A partnership republic based on the existence of the two peoples was established in 1960. .There is no struggle between a majority and a minority in Cyprus. In Cyprus there is the tendency of the Greek Cypriot partner to seize the partnership republic which was established with the participation of the Turkish Cypriots.".

Strongly criticizing the description of Islam as a terrorist religion, Mr Denktas said that if injustice and oppression is eliminated, then incidents would disappear. Expressing his grief over the continuing war between Palestine and Israel, the Turkish Cypriot leader said that if Israel accepts a sovereign Palestinian state as its neighbour and if it begins to establish neighbourly relations, then the problem would be resolved. He noted that the Turkish Cypriots want an end to the loss of lives and peace in the Middle East, alleging that peace in Cyprus will be established when the two sides "mutually accept the equal sovereignty of the other side".

Mr Denktas claimed that it is very easy to solve the Cyprus problem within the framework of justice and equity, saying that the problem cannot be solved if one of the sides is told that it is the legitimate government and the other side that it cannot become a government.

Reminding that the Convention is being held with a view to discussing the problems of the Islamic world, Mr Denktas said that the Cyprus issue is a problem of the Islamic world, which "has been bleeding for the last 40 years". He finally asked that this problem be dealt with and diagnosed, adding that this will greatly help the Turkish Cypriots and that the people are in need of this help.

Meanwhile, Mehmet Nuri Yilmaz, Turkey's Religious Affairs Director and chairman of the Convention, who was the first speaker to address the meeting, said the meetings of the Convention are being organized since 1995 with a view to strengthening the cooperation among Islamic countries and securing peace and prosperity.

Noting that there are "special and sentimental reasons" for holding this meeting in the occupied areas of Cyprus, Mr Yilmaz alleged that the rights of the Muslim Turks living in Cyprus were usurped as a result of the bloody attacks launched by Greek Cypriots in 1960 and that they were forced to live under inhuman conditions for 11 years.

[02] Mesut Yilmaz discussed Cyprus with Prodi

YENIDUZEN (16.04.02) reports that Turkey's State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Mesut Yilmaz said on Monday that he discussed the Cyprus issue in his meeting yesterday with Mr Romano Prodi, EU Commission President.

Addressing a news conference held in Brussels, Mr Yilmaz said the following on the issue: "Just like our other counterparts in EU, Mr Prodi also expressed his wish that the Cyprus problem has to be solved before the Copenhagen Summit. I told him that Turkey also wanted that, but even if this is not possible, we hope for reaching an agreement in Cyprus on the main points of a possible solution before the summit".

According to Mr Yilmaz, Mr Prodi is expected to visit Turkey in June and he will be the first EU Commission Chairman who will officially go to Turkey.

Mr Yilmaz expressed the opinion that Turkey took radical steps in its membership process to the European Union (EU), adding that the EU should expend further confidence in Turkish public opinion for certain "sensitive steps" to be taken.

[03] Denktas to visit Strasbourg on 21 April

KIBRIS (16.04.02) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas is to visit Strasbourg on 21 April to have various contacts and give a lecture on the Cyprus problem.

The paper writes that Mr Denktas will leave the occupied areas on 20 April and go to Istanbul where he will also meet various people and give a lecture on the Cyprus issue at the Association of the Graduates of Roberts College.

In Strasbourg Mr Denktas will have a meeting with the President of the European Court of Human Rights and officials of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

He will also deliver a speech at a conference for Cyprus and return to the occupied areas on 25 April.

[04] The USA proposed a project to the occupation regime on transferring electricity from Turkey

YENIDUZEN (16.04.02) reports that the United States of America has proposed a project for transferring electricity from Turkey to the occupied areas of Cyprus by underwater cables.

The paper writes that the project is estimated to cost 100 million dollars and when it is completed the electricity to be transferred to occupied Cyprus, is expected to be 200 megawatts annually.

The project will be financed by ABB company, which is a Swedish-Swiss partnership, and could be completed within 18 months.

It is reported that other companies, such as Pirelli and Alcatel are also interested in the issue and are prepared to submit their own projects.

YENIDUZEN writes that the so-called "Prime Minister's" office has created a group, which is searching for ways to solve the electricity problem in the pseudostate. Apart from transferring electricity with underwater cables, the above-mentioned group is also examining the alternative of building a new power station.

[05] Eroglu: "Concessions on the territory issue are not possible"

KIBRIS (16.04.02) reports that Dervis Eroglu, so-called Prime Minister, said yesterday that the Turkish Cypriot side could make no concessions on the territorial aspect of the Cyprus problem.

The paper writes that Mr Eroglu gave yesterday "title-deeds" to 43 young families for land in the occupied village of Komi Kepir, in the Karpass peninsula.

Addressing the participants in the ceremony, Mr Eroglu claimed that looking after the land, which is now under the occupation of the Turkish army, is very important.

[06] Angolemli: "We have a golden opportunity for an agreement"

KIBRIS (16.04.02) reports that Huseyin Angolemli, chairman of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) said yesterday that there is a "great possibility" for Cyprus joining the European Union until the end of this year and added that "a golden opportunity" exists in the hands of the two communities in Cyprus to reach an agreement on the Cyprus problem by that time.

Speaking during a meeting with Spain's Ambassador to Nicosia, Ignacio Garcia Valdecasas, Mr Angolemli noted that the Cyprus problem has lasted for a long time and expressed the opinion that this is the time for its solution.

From his part, Mr Valdecasas expressed the support of the EU Presidency to the face-to-face talks between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas and noted that the EU will keep encouraging them to find a lasting solution on the island.

"We really want an agreement to be reached on the island and after that a united Cyprus to join the EU", said Mr Valdecasas.

[07] Great ecological tragedy in the occupied area of Lefka

KIBRIS (16.04.02) reports that scientists from Turkey and Europe who visited the occupied areas examined the situation regarding the wastes of the Cyprus Mines Corporation (CMC) in the area of occupied Karavostasi village, near Lefka.

The paper writes that "the scientists, who were struck with terror because of what they saw, warned that 'here a world ecological disaster is taking place'".

The scientists said also that the mineral wastes in the installations of CMC cause very serious pollution. After they examined the barrels full with chemicals and metal wastes, which are spread all over the place, the scientists warned that if measures are not taken against this situation, both the people and the environment of the region are in great danger.

The scientists noted the following: "The worst side of the metal wastes is that they appear after 10-15 years. Everybody here eats some acid, without even knowing it.".

[08] Wild Donkeys of Karpass peninsula will be exterminated

According to Yeniduzen (16/04/2002), a number of wild donkeys living in the occupied Karpass peninsula will be exterminated and some others will be sold abroad.

The paper says that the so-called Ministry of agriculture in cooperation with the Turkish Envoy in the occupied area has prepared a project to grow chickpeas in the occupied Karpass peninsula and in order to realize this project they decided to get rid of the wild donkeys in the area with the excuse that the animals will harm the chickpea fields. According to the paper, occupation regime has decided to exterminate some of these animals unique in the world and the rest to export abroad. For the extermination, reports the paper, tranquilliser bullets will be used and to this effect two rifles were ordered which can use this kind of bullets. Yeniduzen reports that during the coming days environmental organizations will take up the issue.
