[01] YENIDUZEN criticizes Turkey's attitude towards the Turkish Cypriot businessmen

Under the title "Our businessmen are figureheads" YENIDUZEN (26.2.02) reports that the Turkish Cypriot businessmen were turned into "figureheads" in the so-called "Special incentives model for the TRNC" program, which is to be organized in the occupied areas by the Turkish Minister responsible for Cyprus, Sukru Sina Gurel between 3 and 6 March.

Instead of playing an active role the Turkish Cypriot businessmen will be mere observers, writes the paper.

According to YENIDUZEN the invitations for the program, sent by Mr Gurel, conclude as follows: "As hosts of the promotion activity, we shall be glad to see you among us".

The paper also notes that the 265 million dollars, which are said to be given to the pseudostate by Turkey, are not included in the budget of the Republic of Turkey.

[02] Turkish Cypriot political parties will give their proposals to Rauf Denktas on the Cyprus issue by March 1

AFRIKA (26.2.02) reports that the Turkish Cypriot political parties are to give in writing to the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas, their proposals regarding the talks on the Cyprus issue until Friday, 1 March.

Invoking "reliable political sources", the paper notes that these proposals will also be published.

[03] The industrial sector in the occupied areas is going through a crisis

HALKIN SESI (26/2/02), under the front-page banner headline, "The industry is coming to the end", reports that the industry in the occupied areas is in crisis. The paper reports that in 1994, 13,000 persons were employed in the industrial sector, but due to the economic crisis the number dropped to 9,000. In 1994, some 158 businesses operated in the textile industry and that the number was reduced to 56 by the end of the year 2000.

According to the so-called Industry Department, during 2000, eighteen businesses were shut down in eight different industrial sectors, while figures for 2001 have yet to be calculated.

Industrial growth in the occupied areas continued until 1994. After the pseudostate's so-called declaration of independence in 1983, 298 factories were opened in different industrial sectors employing a total of 6,587 persons. By 1988, the number of factories increased to 538, while the number of employees rose to 9,128. This rapid growth lasted until 1994. In that year, 769 factories were operating and 13,069 persons were employed.

During the years 1995-96, the slowdown began. By the end of 1996, 150 factories were forced to close due to economic difficulties.

Moreover, KIBRIS (26/2/02) reports that thousands of people in the occupied areas are in court for dept and bankruptcy cases. According to a report, which was prepared by the so-called General Secretariat of the Supreme Court, there was an important increase in the cases of bankruptcy due to the latest economic crisis. There were approximately 14,036 law cases as compared with 7012 of the year 2001.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[04] Turkish Cypriot columnist comments on the illegal forthcoming visit of Sukru Sina Gurel to the occupied areas of Cyprus

Under the title "Do not come!. We do not want you!." Yalcin Okut of AFRIKA (26.2.02) comments on the forthcoming illegal visit of the Turkish State Minister responsible for Cyprus, Sukru Sina Gurel who is expected to visit the occupied areas heading a crowded delegation in order to announce the economic aid of Turkey to the pseudostate. Mr Okut writes, among other things, the following:

"Mr Denktas is agitated. After the Europeans announced that the Union will help financially the Turkish Cypriots our 'Great Leader' ordered: 'Be careful! Do not believe in such carrots!'.And he broke the good news to the people: His Excellency Sukru Sina is said to be coming very soon with a crowded team and announce the investments program to be implemented here! We saw a lot and know very well the packages and the programs which Sukru Sina Gurel and his kind have been bringing and dictating. All of them are in substance programs to 'package' the Turkish Cypriots. .

The community has experienced a lot and knows these packages. It got dog-tired with such experiences and being packaged again and again. It does not want another package! .If the colonialists in Ankara were thinking to do good things about us, they would respect the views of the Turkish Cypriot employers, if not the views of the Turkish Cypriot leftists. They did not do that. They do not take our people into consideration at all.

Let us say we understand their enmity towards the leftists, but why do they not bear the capitalist Turkish Cypriots who are from their own class? They cannot because this is the incurable illness of the capitalist system: it does not want a competitor! Despite the endless speeches praising the 'free competition', 'the rules of the free market' etc, they consider dangerous and they do not want even our little producing potential. The rule of competition: 'the big fish eats the small one'. .

Those who say 'we are like the flesh and the nail', 'we shall make (the TRNC) live for ever', 'Do not worry, we shall always be supporting you' etc, in spite of these empty words, think that it's too much even if we sell parsley in Mersin. .

Wasn't it personally Sukru Sina who, not long ago only one year before, said to influential Turkish businessmen who were in argument with him: 'Do not worry, we send one to Cyprus and take three from it'? As a matter of fact, do the statistics not show this? .

Now there has been light on the horizon. The Turkish Cypriot businessmen are about to begin joint investments with their Greek Cypriot colleagues and compatriots. Sukru Sina Efendi, being at the office of the 'Colonial Minister', is coming here in order to prevent this and to dictate economic measures, which under the name of aid will save this source of profit.

If we wish to be saved from the gambling and brothel economy and culture and obtain a healthy economic structure, all together, workers, employers, farmers and intellectuals must shout 'Do not come! We do not want you!'.

If not, it will be too late. If not, just like the Turkish mafia took the most of the big hotels and turned the TRNC into a 'Paradise of gambling houses and brothels, the Turkish government will also want to prevent us from obtaining our rights and freedoms, which for years are taken away from us and will be given back to us by the accession to the EU. It will insist on 'investment (!) programs' saying 'EU is a rotten apple, it will not be of any good to you! It will poison you! It will destroy you! It will deceive you! Look, what beautiful and sweet apples we are bringing to you! You will definitely abandon this (the EU apple) and eat these..'. .

If we do not see and support in a concrete and crystal clear way the rights of our community, after not such a long time, we shall no be any different from Sirnak and Hatay. .".
