[01] Statements by the Turkish Cypriot leader before and after meeting President Clerides

Ankara Anatolia (19/2/02) reported that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas, met with President Glafcos Clerides in the buffer zone on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters before leaving for the meeting, Denktas said that at today's meeting they would hold the last meeting of the first round of direct talks and they would come together again on March 1 after the interval.

The two leaders will today discuss the issues, which were earlier taken up.

Speaking to reporters after his meeting with President Glafcos Clerides the Turkish Cypriot leader said that both sides would have the chance to review what has been done so far until March 1. During the meeting on March 1, Denktas said they would discuss which issues would be debated next.

When asked if he was hopeful about the efforts to bring a solution, Denktas said: ``It's not easy to solve 38-year old problems.

There are things, which both sides became obsessed with during these years. We have to accept these. One should refrain from creating new problems in order to solve the existing ones. This is a very difficult exercise for both sides. ``We're hoping that the realities are revealed and announced to the public. And the public will make a decision when the time comes. I'm not talking about a referendum but a referendum could be held if an agreement is reached, `` he added.

When asked if the UN would present an alternative view during the second round, Denktas said: ``No. Their duty will continue as it is at the moment. `` The 14th meeting which was held today was the last one of the first round of meetings. The second round will start on Friday March 1.

UN Secretary-General's Cyprus Special Representative Alvaro De Soto will go to New York on Wednesday to brief UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the UN Security Council about the direct talks.

[02] Angolemli asks for an investigation on the issue of tapping the telephones of AFRIKA and the threats against the paper

AFRIKA (20.2.02) reports that Huseyin Angolemli, leader of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP), has asked the illegal "Assembly" of the pseudostate to conduct an investigation on the issue of the accusations of AFRIKA that "unknown" persons listen to its telephone calls and threaten its journalists.

Addressing yesterday the so-called "Assembly" Mr Angolemli said that the issue caused concern to the people and noted that the necessary measures should be taken, so that the truth is revealed. Mr Angolemli argued that such a situation is undoubtedly contrary to the freedom of communication and democracy.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same session of the "Assembly", Sonay Adem, so-called "MP" of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), asked the so-called "Prime Minister", Dervish Eroglu, to declare whether his pseudogovernment has done anything about the threats against the journalists of AFRIKA.

Furthermore, Rasih Keskiner, Organizing Secretary of the Patriotic Union Movement (PUM) issued yesterday a statement noting that: "While the negotiations procedure is going on and with the allegation that the Cyprus problem is about to be solved, the ruling circles continue to oppress, threaten and terrorize the people in the Northern part of Cyprus".

Reminding the obstacles put by the occupation regime to the bi-communal meetings, the so-called "law" which forbids protests and other meetings without having taken the permission of the occupation "authorities" and the behaviour against Nilgun Orhon and Umit Inatci, who were dismissed from their schools because of their articles in AFRIKA, Mr Keskiner pointed out that PUM rejects "the practices imported by the Republic of Turkey aiming at silencing the Turkish Cypriot community".

[03] An ancient tomb was found east of the occupied village of Galatia

According to KIBRIS (20/2/02) an ancient tomb was found in the occupied village of Galatia, in the Karpas peninsula. The tomb, thought to belong to the Roman Era, was unearthed accidentally last week, when a villager went with his tractor in the fields to collect wood. One kilometre east of the occupied village of Galatia, the tractor fell in a hole, which was opened by the tractor's wheel. The villager, thinking that this might be of interest, informed the so-called Antiquities Department officials to carry out an excavation.

As a result of the excavations archaeologist Hasan Tekel said that the tomb has three metres depth and is 2000 years old, which means that it belongs to the Roman Era. He also said that they have found implements belonging to dead people. "The gifts were near the skeleton and some important implements were made of glass. Among the glass implements, there was an unguentarium (a small glass bottle for perfume), and other small glass bottles", Hasan Tekel added.

The paper publishes a photo with the findings.

[04] Delegation of the so-called assembly will participate in the meeting of the Interparliamentary Union

YENIDUZEN (20/2/02) reports that the a delegation from the so-called Assembly will participate in the meeting of the Interparliamentary Union, which will be held between 16-24 March, in Morocco. According to a decision taken by the general assembly of the pseudo-Assembly, the delegation will be consisting of one representative from every political party represented in the pseudo-Assembly.

The so-called Director of Foreign Relations of the pseudo-Assembly, Seyit Yolak will head the delegation. From the political parties Ilker Nevzat will represent the National Union Party, Huseyin Oztoprak the Democratic Party and Ferdi Sabit Soyer the Republican Turkish Party.

[05] Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot businessmen met yesterday at Ledra Palace hotel

KIBRIS (20/2/02) reports that delegations of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and the Greek Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Industry met yesterday at Ledra Palace hotel.

The delegations of the two Chambers included eight businessmen from each and were headed by their Chairmen. In the meeting, an official of the EU delegation in Cyprus was also present. Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of the Greek Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vasilis Rologis and the Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, Ali Erel, made statements to the press on the details of the meeting.

Erel said that the two Chambers were to meet in the occupied areas on 14 January 2002, but the meeting was postponed because of serious problems. For this reason, they have decided to meet at Ledra Palace, Erel added.

Noting that they aim to continue their meetings, Erel said: "Within the framework of a new rapprochement and a rapprochement of the businessmen, the positive inputs must be taken into consideration. Our leaders who try to find a solution for the Cyprus problem for a long time now, must continue their efforts until they reach a solution." He also said that they agreed to exchange proposals on the EU funds, amounting to some 1.5 million euros, at the next meeting in the beginning of March and he also added that an attempt was made to work together in the future and see that EU fundings benefit small and medium enterprises on the island.

Referring to the obstacles that the occupation regime imposed on the Greek Cypriot businessmen last December, thus causing the cancellation of a meeting between delegations of the two Chambers in the occupied area, Mr Rologis said that they are going to organize their meetings at Ledra Palace or in Brussels.

[06] The so-called Kyrenia American University opens campus in Karachi
