[01] Replies by Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit to questions on the European Army and Cyprus during a press conference in Washington

TRT 2 Television (17/1/02) broadcast live the press conference given by Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit in Washington on his contacts with U.S. officials.

Following are the replies of Mr Ecevit to questions on the European Army and Cyprus:

Question: Greek Prime Minister Simitis was in Washington. He said that Greece cannot accept the Ankara compromise reached concerning the European Security and Defence concept. Did you receive any signals during your contacts in the White House or with the US Administration to activate or affect this compromise?

Answer: No, we did not dwell on this subject much. I mentioned it a few times in some of our meetings. I mentioned it because the United States had mediated our discussions with Britain on this subject, and it had made very valuable contributions. I conveyed our gratitude to the United States in this regard. It was not mentioned in any other connection. Naturally, for the past two and a half years, we have been telling the whole world that it is unacceptable not to include Turkey or even consult it in operations to be undertaken by a European army withou

t utilizing NATO capabilities. Our view was eventually accepted. We were especially insistent that operations to be undertaken by the European army using its own means should not be directed against Turkey. It is surprising that Greece should oppose this, because inevitably, this brings to mind the suspicion that Greece might be considering an operation against Turkey. I do believe that Greece is not entertaining such thoughts, but such an impression might be created. Therefore, I hope that Greece will not insist on this objection.

Question: Were conditions posited with regard to Cyprus? How was this issue raised?

Answer: No condition was posited. We raised this issue during our meeting with Mr. Bush. We noted our satisfaction over the beginning of a dialogue process launched by Mr. Denktas with Mr. Clerides. We said that this process could lead to positive results in time, if not immediately. The subject was not mentioned further.

[02] Statements by Denktas during a meeting with a delegation of the Marmara Municipalities

Vatan newspaper (18/1/02) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas met yesterday with a delegation of Marmara and Straits Municipalities Union.

Speaking during the meeting Denktas said: `We know the path we will go, but we have to be aware of the obstacles and difficulties and learn to overcome them with determination, good will and reciprocal understanding. There is peace in Cyprus since 1974. The matter is compromise and agreement with the Greek Cypriots. We are endeavouring for this. We hope we can reach a compromise and agreement. In order to reach this target, both sides should respect the rightsof the other and should not dominate the other.``

Denktas also said that ``Turkish Cypriots` founderpartner status foreseen by 1960 agreements should also continue in thenew agreement`` and that ``a strong agreement which would not pave wayto the reoccurrence of the former incidents, should be provided``. Denktas continued: ``All the world has an expectation that `Cyprusquestion should be settled down.` The nations are also expecting it. But, everybody should know what can be done and what should not be done for a compromise. Nobody should expect us to end our state. This will be injustice and an illogical behaviour. We should try to reach an agreement under equal conditions between the two sides. We are receiving support from everybody in this direction. We are pleased with this and become hopeful. But, we should not have extreme hope, but be cautious. We have to know what we should protect.`` Turkey and Greece had equal rights on Cyprus, Denktas said and noted that this was guaranteed by the 1960 agreements. Denktas reiterated that it was not possible to remove that status with a new agreement and stressed that Turkish Cypriots would not accept an agreement which lacked Turkey`s guarantee. Responding to questions of members of the delegation, Denktas saidthat although it was a part of the pseudostate Varosha was closed with a United Nations (U.N) Security Council resolution and Turkey was kept responsible for this.

Denktas said: ``Although it is a part of our territory and although 70 percent of it is a stolen foundation land, we are told notto touch Varosha until the issue is settled.``

Upon another question, Denktas said that the process experienced in Cyprus was not explained to young people as much as it should be and that many teenagers were brought up without knowing the Cyprus question. Denktas noted that Greek Cypriot teenagers were inculcated with enmity against Turks in Greek Cypriot schools and said: ``We have to end all these. It is a talent to make people friends and not to make people foes. I hope we can ensure this.``

[03] Mehmet Ali Talat: We shall built the future together

Yemiduzen (18/1/02) reports that the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), Mr Mehmet Ali Talat, yesterday visited the Turkish Cypriot Farmers´ Union in the framework of creating social co-operation along the peace process.

The Turkish Cypriot farmers are experiencing hardships because of the high costs this year and they are facing the danger of reduced productions, said Mr Talat adding that a positive situation was created for the future of the community from the process for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Mr Talat stressed that all the sections of the community have a duty to contribute to the peace process and they must prepare to assist in building the future together each one from his own field.

On his part the President of the Farmers´ Union Mr Ali Kapakci, said that the Union supports the achievement of peace in the island but there should be no hurry in order to achieve lasting peace.

[04] The National People´s Movement declared the Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce a traitor

Under the title Complete Disgrace, Ortam (18/1/02) attacks the National People´s Movement (NPM) for declaring a traitor every person in the occupied areas who comes against the wrong and the injustice.

In the end this has happened as well and the Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce Mr Ali Erel was declared a traitor by the NPM. Good luck to you. We wonder whose turn is next? said a spokesman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber.

The paper writes that NPM, which is created by the people who are nurtured by the rotten system and enjoys the support of the Presidential Palace, continues to target certain people by declaring them traitors.

The parasites of the regime, who are making the Turkish Cypriot people get weaker and weaker like a chronic disease for the last 28 years of the absolute hegemony of Denktas´s unbroken presidency are resorting to every method to maintain their regime, writes Ortam referring to their attack against Ali Erel and other Turkish Cypriots who dare to speak the truth.

[05] Turkish official on the so-called embargo in sports

KIBRIS (18.1.02) reports that Kemal Mutlu, Turkeys Youth and Sports General Director, said yesterday that Turkey will continue to assist the pseudosta

te with determination in its efforts for overcoming the so-called embargo in sports.

Mr Mutlu, who is heading a delegation visiting the occupied areas of Cyprus, said: We will not be daunted in order to break the sports embargo. We shall reach the top by working systematically. The mother does everything for her child.

The Turkish official added also that no state could abandon the efforts to participate in athletic events, which provide a good opportunity for promoting a country.

Meanwhile, the so-called chairman of the National Olympic Committee of the pseudostate, Eyup Zafer Gokbilen, expressed the occupation regime's wish to participate in international games between universities, which are to take place in Izmir.
