[01] Turkish Foreign Minister met with the Turkish Cypriot leader in Adana According to KIBRIS (18/9/01) Turkey's Foreign Minister Mr Ismail Cem went yesterday to Adana in order to meet with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Rauf Denktas. Responding to questions of reporters prior to the meeting Cem said, ``We hold meetings every month. We could not hold this meeting that was scheduled for Saturday due to terrorist attacks in the U.S. To this end, we decided to meet here by seizing the opportunity of Denktas` visit to Adana. `` Asked if Incirlik air base will be used in a possible retaliation of the U.S., Cem said, ``I made a necessary statement on this issue at the parliament and I do not want to say anything more. `` Cem will return to Ankara on Tuesday morning.

[02] Chairman of the Turkish Parliament arrives tomorrow to the occupied areas KIBRIS (18/9/01) reports that the Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA), Omer Izgi is going to arrive tomorrow for an "official visit" to the occupied areas at the head of a parliamentary delegation. The TGNA Chairman will hold contacts with the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas, the so-called Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu, the so-called TRNC Assembly speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu, the Commander of the "Securities Forces" in the occupied areas Brigadier-General Galip Mendi and other "officials" of the occupation regime. Within the framework of his contacts Izgi will also meet with the leaders of the political parties represented at the pseudo-assembly. Finally, the Turkish Parliamentary delegation will return to Ankara on 22 September.

[03] Talat says that «important developments» could be expected in Cyprus Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), said yesterday that «important developments» could be expected regarding the Cyprus problem within the international relations which are created after the terrorist attacks in the USA, reports «Yeniduzen» (18.09.01). Mr Talat was talking at a press conference during which he presented a book under the title «The way to our existence», which consists of eleven parts with the positions expected to define RTP`s policy in the future. The positions included in the book are to be discussed and approved at the party congress, on 21 October. At the press conference Mr Talat accused the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas of applying «incoherent and illogical policy» on the Cyprus problem. Referring to the occupation regime, the leader of the RTP underlined the following: «In normal countries such regimes cannot exist, because in normal countries when an economic crisis exists the governments cannot stay (in power). However, unfortunately our country is not a normal one. It is a client state, or in other words it works like a puppet state. Because behind it there is a protector. The government does whatever he (the protector) says. ...». Furthermore, Mr Talat noted that the emigration of the Turkish Cypriots is continuously increasing and added that even businessmen are thinking of obtaining passports of the Republic of Cyprus and emigrate to Britain. «In this community which is heading towards its elimination, something must be done», argued the leader of RTP. Asked about the developments in the world after the 11 September terrorist attacks in the USA and their relation with Cyprus` EU course and Turkey`s strategic importance, Mr Talat noted the following: «...The Greek Cypriot side is heading with stable steps towards the EU, but they know that there are also some difficulties in their way. Turkey`s position is very important. The important thing is defining the policies in a right and coherent way. As long as the Turkish side does not do that, the Greek Cypriots are going ahead easily...».

[04] Meeting between Denktas, Eroglu and Cosar The terrorist attacks in the United States of America, their possible influence on the Cyprus problem and matters regarding the economy of the pseudostate were discussed yesterday at the weekly regular meeting between the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas, the so-called «Prime Minister» Dervis Eroglu and the so-called «Minister» responsible for the economy, Salih Cosar, reports KIBRIS (18.09.01). Talking after the meeting Mr Eroglu said that they also discussed the recent report of EU rapporteur, Jacques Poos and exchanged some views for the future.

[05] Turks in Australia reject the report of Australia's Special Envoy for Cyprus Turks who live in Australia have rejected the report prepared by Jim Short, Australia's Special Envoy for Cyprus, writes KIBRIS (18.09.01), adding that representatives of 17 Turkish and Turkish Cypriot organizations in Australia have characterized the report «one-sided» and «unacceptable». According to the paper, the report describes Turkey as «invader» and notes that pressures should be exerted on the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas and President Clerides for the resumption of the talks towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem. In the report, Mr Short stresses, among other things, that the Turkish Cypriot leader and President Clerides could be equal only at the negotiating table. Cetin Aktolga, Assistant Co-ordinator of the Council of National People's Movement in Australia, claimed that the report is unacceptable and will not help the two sides.
