[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] The UN Secretary-General plans to invite President Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot leader for consultationsAccording to KIBRIS (20.6.01) the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, is considering to invite President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, either to New York or to Geneva for consultations.KIBRIS, quoting Turkey/s semi official Anatolia Agency (AA) reports that it is highly possible that prior to Kofi Annan/s separate meetings with President Clerides and Rauf Denktash, the US State Department Special Cyprus Coordinator Tom Weston, will visit Athens and Ankara towards to end of July to prepare the necessary ground. Diplomatic sources in Washington stated that since the invitation will come from the UN Secretary-General, both President Clerides and Denktash will give a positive response. KIBRIS further reports that the USA with a view to not leaving the initiative to the EU has started a comprehensive initiative. The USA, reports KIBRIS, within the framework of the Turkish side/s message that «they cannot resume from the point they were left» (Tr. Note, talks) in stead of the old proximity talks process is searching for a new negotiation process. In the meantime it is supporting the efforts aimed at convincing the sides. On the other hand, Greece and the Cyprus Government reports KIBRIS, believe that the «unilateral» application for EU membership will be realized in accordance with the Helsinki decision, whether there will be a settlement or not. However, the Turkish side believes that in a unilateral EU accession the rights of the Turkish side will not be safeguarded, and for this reason it opposes the membership. In order not to anger both sides and not to worsen its relations, already under tension with the EU, the USA instead of taking a clear stance, it says that the EU membership will positively contribute to the settlement efforts. However, what is designed is membership after the settlement. US diplomatic sources, say that the EU Helsinki decisions are known and the settlement was not put as a precondition for EU accession. A source said that the USA has devoted a lot of time to the Cyprus problem, that support is extended to the UN Secretary-General/s efforts to resume the talks, and that there is a need for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem. The same source said that the USA is hopeful of the settlement of the Cyprus problem. «The ideal situation is that before the EU membership gets on a settlement should be reached», the same source said. [02] Akinci: «The most important thing in Cyprus is to achieve peace»Ortam (20.06.01) reports that Communal Liberation Party (CLP) leader, Mustafa Akinci, stressed yesterday that the most important thing in Cyprus is to achieve peace. Talking after a meeting with the Ambassador of Germany to Nicosia, Peter Witting, Mr. Akinci said that «the most important thing in Cyprus is the Cyprus problem, the future of Cyprus, the EU accession process and achieving peace in Cyprus».The Turkish Cypriot politician said that during the meeting with the German diplomat they reiterated once again that the next two years and especially the first year are extremely important for Cyprus. Akinci argued that if the Turkish Cypriots avoid coming to the negotiating table and insist for a long time on the recognition of the pseudostate, then not only will the recognition not be accomplished, but the Greek Cypriots, will enter by themselves into the EU representing the whole of Cyprus. Akinci said that he believes in the solution of the Cyprus problem and at the same time in the accession to the EU but without the Turkish Cypriots giving up the rights they will gain from the solution. [03] NPM and the retired non-commissioned officers threaten those who have different viewsUnder the title «NPM warns...» Vatan (20.06.01), reports that the recently established National People's Movement (NPM), which is co-ordinated by Taner Etkin, advisor of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, issued a statement yesterday calling on the «patriotic Turkish Cypriot people» to protect the pseudostate from the attacks of the Greek Cypriots - Greece twin and «their collaborators» within the Turkish Cypriots.According to the statement the collaborators of the Greek Cypriots are those in the Turkish Cypriot community who attack the NPM, since the day it issued its first announcement. It is also reported that NPM`s establishment will soon be completed, that the «legal procedure» for the establishment of a National Struggle Foundation is also completed and that within a few days the names of the founders of this foundation and detailed information about the organisation will be given to the Press. Meanwhile, the Non-commissioned Officers/ Association has called on those within the Turkish Cypriot community who say that they do not want Ankara and her money, to explain «whose servants they are». In a written statement they issued yesterday the officers claim that it is their duty to call on those who speak against Ankara to stop doing this because it is wrong, as «the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people for survival was conducted with Ankara's material and moral support». [04] Talat says that the Turkish Cypriots must return to the negotiating table KIBRIS (20.06.01) reports that Republican Turkish Party (RTP) leader, Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the Turkish Cypriot side must return to the negotiating table and stressed that finding a solution based on the 1977-79 High Level Agreement between the late President Makarios and the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is a condition for the Turkish side.Addressing yesterday a conference in Istanbul, Mr. Talat described as «wrong» the Turkish policy on Cyprus which is based on the slogan that «the solution is the non-solution» and noted that this policy brings the Turkish side against the United Nations, the international public opinion and the European Union. He added that with the application of this policy the Greek Cypriot side, as he called the Republic of Cyprus, have reached before the door of the European Union.[05] Turkish industrialists demand «new realistic basis» for the Cyprus problemAccording to KIBRIS (20.06.01), Tuncay Ozilhan, president of the Administrative Council of the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association (TUSIAD) said that no efforts are being exerted for re-examining the Cyprus issue, within the framework of the recent developments and for putting the problem, «which is a national case» for Turkey, on to «a realistic basis».Addressing the Second Annual Meeting of the TUSIAD`s Administrative Council, Mr. Ozilhan noted also that Turkey is continuously postponing the harmonisation with the Copenhagen Criteria of the EU. Referring to the «Export and Import report for the 2000» of the so-called «Commerce Department», the paper writes that in the year 2000 the pseudostate exported mainly to Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia dairy products such as halloumi, creme and cheese. It is also reported that during the same period, the pseudostate imported dairy products worth one million 534 thousands and 871 US dollars. The pseudostate is reported to have imported these products from Turkey, Holland, Austria, France, Kuwait, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. A committee also visited the pseudostate for the same purpose in 1996.
