[01] Turkish Minister Gurel pledges undiminished support for Turkish Cypriots

According to Turkish Cypriot newspaper Birlik (8.6.01) Turkish State Minister Sukru Gurel has declared that there will not be any reduction in Turkey/s support for the pseudostate in the areas of economic restructuring and structural reforms.

Gurel went to the occupied areas in order to hold talks and attend the inauguration of the 25th international fair. Gurel was welcomed at occupied Tymbou Airport by the members of the new so-called cabinet, which was approved by Rauf Denktash yesterday.

At a meeting held with the said «ministers» in occupied Nicosia, Gurel said that a decision was made to adopt the necessary measures not to reduce the support accorded to the pseudostate and the technical work to this end will be conducted in Cyprus.

Dervish Eroglu, in turn, remarked that both «countries» have common problems expressing the conviction that Turkey will continue to extend support to the pseudostate, as has been the case in the past. Gurel also met with Dentkash.

[02] Denktash accepts `coalition/ list submitted by Eroglu.

Accoridng to KIBRIS (8.6.01) Dervish Eroglu, the leader of the National Unity Party (NUP) and so-called Primed Minister who was designated by Rauf Denktash to form the new «government» signed the «coalition protocol» with the Democratic Party on Wednesday and submitted the list of the new «cabinet» to Denktash on Thursday.

Denktash said that he accepted the new cabinet, adding that he hoped the «cabinet» could work in harmony.

Denktash said that the coalition has to work without feeling that they are a coalition, stressing that there is a lack of confidence in the pseudostate and it is the mission of the new «government» to overcome this lack of confidence. Denktash stated that he is ready to help the «government» in all issues.

Eroglu said on his part that they will come together with State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel on Friday and discuss the economic issues with him. Before that meeting, they will convene the «cabinet» for the first time, Eroglu said.

The economic package which was earlier prepared will be revised due to changing conditions, Eroglu said, adding that the views of the NUP and the Democratic Party (DP) with which they formed the «coalition» are similar on the Cyprus issue.

DP leader Salih Cosar said in his part that they will try to prepare a new economic programme.

The so-called ministers of the «cabinet» are as follows: - State Minister in Charge of Economy and Deputy Premier: Salih Cosar (DP) - Foreign and Defense Minister : Tahsin Ertugruloglu (NUP) - Finance Minister: Mehmet Bayram (NUP) - Interior, Rural Affairs, and Housing Minister : Mehmet Albayrak (NUP) - National Education and Culture Minister : Ilkay Kamil (NUP) - Forestry and Agriculture Minister: Irsen Kucul (NUP) - Public Works, and Transportation Minister : Salih Miroglu (NUP) - Labour, Social Security, Youth and Sports Minister : Ahmet Kasif (DP) - Health and Social Assistance Minister : Mustafa Arabacioglu (DP) - Tourism and Environment Minister : Serdar Dentkash (DP)

Kibris also reports that the Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit called on Eroglu on the phone and congratulated him.

On his part Mustafa Akinci, Communal Liberation Party leader and former so-called coalition partner, commenting on the new «coalition», after meeting the Ambassadors of the Chech Republic and Slovakia, said the new «government» is an old film shown again and that the two parties in the new «coalition» are the parties responsible for the economic problems of the pseudostate, writes Kibris.

[03] NPM to disclose its leaders/ names soon

Turkish Cypriot newspaper Avrupa 6.6.01 in a report under the title: «The Leaders of NPM» writes that the National Peoples Movement (NPM), established along the lines of the terrorist TMT organization, which has not announced the names of its members other that Taner Etkin despite circulating three unsigned notices up until now is preparing to divulge the names of its other leaders in the coming few days.

According to information the newspaper has gathered from reliable sources, Aydin Akkurt, one of Rauf Denktashs advisors, and Omer Adal, the «Football Federation» chief, are also among the leaders of NPM.

Moreover, it has been learned that Orhan Yucel from occupied Kyrenia and Hasan Keskin from occupied Famagusta have also assumed certain tasks within the movement.

It has also been learned that NPM has set up its representative office in Instanbul at the Akdeniz TV branch. On the other hand, Aziz Gulbahar is reportedly acting as the representative of the movement in London.

[04] So-called police is searching for the culprits of the bomb explosion at Avrupa among the paper/s staff.

Reporting on the bomb explosion at its printing offices on 24 May, Turkish Cypriot newspaper Avrupa (8.6.01) writes that «after Denktash/s statement that /they placed the bomb themselves, a lie that smells slander and conspiracy, it was noticed that police investigations in this direction were intensified.»

The paper adds that although the workers at Avrupa/s printing office were called to the «police» several times, this time they were called to Sarayonu «police Station» where their finger prints were taken.

And the paper concludes: «Two weeks have passed since the explosion but the police has not even issued a statement regarding the type of the bomb yet and so far no satisfactory statement on the whole incident was issued. As it is known, the /police/ has issued no statement regarding the bomb explosion in front of /Prime Minister/ Eroglu/s house either, in spite of Eroglu/s strong insistence».

[05] The Turks are going into action, as the efforts of Cyprus to become a member of the EU intensify

Turkish army officers, ministers and businessmen are going to participate in a conference in the so-called «Near East University» (NEU), which operates illegally in the occupied areas of Cyprus, in order to discuss the Republic of Cyprus` EU accession course and examine Turkey`s strategy on the Cyprus problem, writes the Turkish Cypriot newspaper «Yeniduzen» (08.06.01).

The Turkish Cypriot paper publishes an article of yesterday's Turkish mainland «Milliyet», under the title «Pashas and Patrons to the TRNC». According to the article, Turkey went into action «after the initiatives of the European Union, the USA and the UN to bring the Cyprus problem on the agenda as a priority» and after the intensification of the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus to become a full member of the EU.

The paper reports that the meetings, which are to be held between 12 and 14 June in occupied Nicosia, will be organised in order to deal with «future vision and new strategies» for Cyprus. Two former Chiefs of the General Staff, many generals and owners of the most important holdings of Turkey will be among the participants in the meetings, which are being characterised as a «Summit».

«Milliyet» writes, among other things, the following: «...The meeting which is organised by the Near East University, the TRNC and the government of Turkey will be a show of strength and a kind of an answer to the `concessions` demanded by Turkey for the granting of `external financial aid` because of the economic crisis. ... State Minister responsible for Cyprus, Sukru Sina Gurel and Foreign Minister, Ismail Cem will represent the government at the meeting which will be opened by TRNC President Rauf Denktash and will last for three days. The retired Chiefs of the General Staff Nacip Toruntay and Ismail Hakki Karadayi, as well as the retired generals Kemal Yavuz, Sabri Yirmibesoglu, Nezihi Cakar, Kemal Yamak and Fikret Ozden Boztepe will be speaking at the meetings or will just participate in them. ...»

According to the paper some of the businessmen who are going to participate in the meetings are Rahmi Koc, Sakip Sabanci, Bulent Eczacibasi, Jak Kamhi, Cem Boyner and Sarik Tanra. Officials from the EU and the UN as well as experts and academicians will also attend or address the meetings.

«While Adel Safty, Nanette Neuwahl, Michael Stephen will be among those who are going to address or attend the meetings, many Turkish academicians like International Relations Professor Osman Metin Ozturk and History Professor Ilber Ortayli will contribute to the strategy preparations which are to take place in the meetings», concludes «Milliyet».
