[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash speaks of initiatives to rescue Tekogul According to YENI DEMOCRAT (10.5.01) the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. RaufDenktash has stated that certain sectors have initiated a movement in a bid to rescue Omer Gazi Tekogul, the Turkish Cypriot from the village of Pyla who was sentenced to ten years in prison by a Cypriot court on charges of drug smuggling and who is currently serving his sentence in a Cypriot prison, and that, within this framework, he has been receiving letters some of which are signed and some of which are not. Noting that some of these letters are signed by "the organization", Denktash continued: ``The state is doing whatever is necessary. I do not want any incidents. Especially any incident in Pyla will only render our work very difficult''.Speaking to reporters in occupied Nicosia yesterday, Denktash said that for the last ten days he has been receiving letters, some signed, some unsigned, and some signed by "the organization." Noting that all these letters ask that Tekogul be rescued and refer to activities being planned to that end, Denktash said: ``I do not know how serious the contents of these letters are. I have given the necessary directives to our security organizations to investigate the issue. I do not know whether there is such an organization''. Asked about the names of the organizations that appeared in the letters, Denktash disclosed them as follows: ``Resistance against injustice, Tekogul will be rescued; and 25 youths''. He then continued: ``A single person might have written these letters. He might have tried to create the appearance of an organization. On the other hand, it might also be a serious thing. Denktash further noted that he recognizes some of the signatures in the letters, adding that he calls on them to come and talk to him. Denktash addressed the youths writing the letters as follows: ``Do not make the situation more difficult with the activities you intend to initiate thinking that you will be helping Tekogul. We should conduct this business through the normal channels. We are not idle regarding the issue. Be patient''. Addressing members of the organization, Denktash said: ``Writing letters left and right claiming to take various actions under the guise of an organization is unacceptable. Everyone can talk about anything with me. Therefore there is no need to resort to such methods.'' Noting that such a move can destroy everything at a time when initiatives are being taken through the official channels, Denktash said: This move should be prevented. It would be tantamount to outside interference in something that is following its normal course. This would render our work very difficult. Denktash concluded: ``Tekogul was captured through a deceitful plot unacceptable to any judicial authority as a show of force to the Turkish Cypriots of Pyla and to show that the Turkish Cypriots are the source of the drug trafficking in the Greek Cypriot side. He was harshly punished. We believe that such a treatment would have been invalid in any other court. This is an issue that can even be taken to the Human Rights Court. We hope that this will not be necessary. From the viewpoint of a jurist and an administrator, this cannot be perceived as a positive and necessary outcome''. [02] Denktash claims that Greece is behind some articles in the Turkish PressAccording to ``KIBRIS'' (10.5.01), the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash, claimed yesterday that some articles published in the Press in Turkey are ``a Greek game'', because they express the view that the Cyprus problem is an obstacle for Turkey`s accession to the European Union (EU).Speaking in occupied Kyrenia at a seminar organised by the Union of Turkey`s sugar-beet producers (PANCO), Mr. Denktash repeated his allegations that the only aim of the Greek Cypriot side is to enter unilaterally into the EU. [03] Erkan Egmez will continue taking action against the Greek police torturersIn a short report with the above title, KIBRIS (10.5.01), writes the following:``Erkan Egmez, who was arrerrsted years ago by the Greek Cypriots for drug trafficking and was subjected to torture and violence, is not giving up taking action against the Greek Cypriot Government, inspite of the fact that he was paid 10,400 pound sterling as compensation by the (European) Court of Human Rights. He has applied to the Committee of Representative of the (European) Court of Human Rights due to the fact that the policemen who tortured him remained unpunished. Egmez, who has applied to the Committee of Representatives through Tekin Akkillioglu, who represented him before the (European) Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg stated that the case is not closed with the compensation, and criticized the Greek Cypriot Government for confining itself to the compensation. Egmez also stated that the Court too defined that he was subjected to violence and torture, but the policemen remained unpunished. Egmez stressed that despite this ascertainment by the (European) Court of Human Rights, the Greek Cypriot Government has not taken action against the policemen who tortured him and is trying to cover this up. Egmez asked that this situation be taken into consideration.'' [04] The so-called International Children/s Festival is to take place from 31 May until 5 JuneAccording to ``KIBRIS'' (10.5.01), this year's so-called International Children/s Festival will be the 15th festival of its kind in the occupied areas. It is organised by the so-called Youth Centre from 31 May until 5 June, in order to celebrate the International Children/s Day.The paper reports that this year 150 guests will participate in the Festival. The participants will come from Turkey, Poland, Georgia and Bulgaria. Yesterday the administrators of the ``Youth Centre'' visited the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in order to invite him to the activities. Mr. Denktash called on them to continue these activities as they are ``the backbone of our existence''. [05] The participants in the Conference ``The Small Island States in a Changing World'' are for a lasting solution to the Cyprus problemAccording to ``Vatan'' (10.5.01), the participants in the Conference with the subject ``The Small Island States in a Changing World'' which was organised two days ago in the pseudostate by the illegal Eastern Mediterranean University (DAU), issued a declaration expressing their support for finding, as soon as possible, a solution to the Cyprus problem which will bring lasting peace on the island.The paper reports also that the participants in the Conference decided that it is necessary to create a ``Research Centre for the Small States'' in the occupied areas of Cyprus. [06] Thousands of trees cut down at Karavostasi area YENIDUZEN (10.5.01) in its front page leader under banner headlines ``Theowner of the lake is NUP District official'', writes that thousands of trees were cut down in the occupied area of Karavostasi lake. An area of 300-400 donums at Karavostasi was bought one and a half years ago by National Unity Party district official Ozgun Faruk.Although 60 donums of that land come under a project called ``Green Zone'', trees were cut down with the excuse that it is a ``private property''. The paper also reports that many inhabitants of the occupied villages of Lefka and Karavostasi will not remain observers to this massacre but they will react.
