  • [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] Cem will attempt to change USA policy on Cyprus CUMHURIYET (24.3.01) reports that during the Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail

Cem/s meeting with his US Counterpart Colin Powel and Vice-President Dick Cheney, he will try to convince the US Administration not to support the Greek Cypriot position on Cyprus.

The paper writes: ``Turkey could ask the USA to be more neutral. It could ask the USA, instead of adopting the Greek stance as right, to develop its own private view within the framework of the existing realities on the island. Turkey is going to stress that the confederation proposal is still on the negotiating table''

[02] Communal Liberation Party discusses withdrawal from so-called coalition government

KIBRIS (26.3.01) reports that the Communal Liberation/s 43-member party assembly is to convene at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss ``withdrawal from the government''.

The paper says that the future of the coalition, established on January 1st 1999 between the National Unity Party and the Communal Liberation Party, will be discussed tonight.

The Secretary-General of the Communal Liberation Party, Mr. Ozal Ziya, said the following on the issue: ``It is a fact that we are faced with various problems. It is impossible to hide this. In order to overcome these problems positive steps must be taken.

We have been saying that these problems are multi-dimmensional, we are experiencing them every day and the CLP has expressed its views clearly, but we see that they are not being tackled. We shall put forward certain demands both from Turkey and our coalition partners.

We want to solve these problems speedily without wasting any time''.

[03] Enver Emin re-elected Chairman of National Revival Party (NRP) The National Revival Party (NRP), a right-wing, nationalist party, held its

second regular assembly in occupied Nicosia yesterday during which Enver Emin, was re-elected Chairman of the Party.

[04] Unemployment like an avalanche With the above title in its front page leader, ORTAM (26.3. 01), writes that

far from decreasing, unemployment is increasing day after day in the occupied areas as a result of the economic crisis.

The paper writes that unemployment, which always affected the occupied areas and created the phenomenon of emigration, is non affecting the so- called universities, and adds:

``About four thousand students have either postponed their enrolments or completely abandoned their schools while the biggest ``university'', East Mediterranean University started to implement an austerity policy''.

The paper concludes by saying that 150 workers of ``East Mediterranean University'' were laid off and the rest are living under stress over the uncertainty and fear of being laid off.

[05] Republican Turkish Party General Secretary criticises the policy of the pseudostate regarding the bicommunal activities

According to Yeniduzen (26.3. 01), the General Seceretary of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Ferdi Sabit Soyer, speaking in the so- called Assembly, has said that he could not understand the paranoiac behaviour of the pseudo- government which tries to prevent the bicommunal activities, by interposing obstacles in an effort to force its recognition.

Commenting on the statement of the so-called ``Minister'' of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Tahsin Ertugruloglu that there is no such thing as a ``bi-communal choir'', Mr. Soyer noted that ``a very good effort is being made'' by this choir and wished there would be a bi-communal classical music group, orchestra etc.

He criticised the fact that last week the pseudostate did not give permission to the bi-communal choir to sing at the so- called ``Near East University'' for the benefit of the Turkish Cypriot Thalassemia Foundation and added that ``this paranoiac and not reasonable practice must be abandoned''.

Mr. Soyer says, inter alia, the following:

``Where would an activity like this, in which all the foreign ambassadors would participate, take place? In one of our universities which the Greek Cypriot chauvinists call pseudo-university. Who would benefit from this activity? The Thalassemia Foundation, which is a legal institution of the Turkish Cypriot people....''

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[06] Avrupa: ``We must say `stop` to Ankara!''

In its main editorial Avrupa (25.3.01) says that the Turkish Cypriots are hostages in Ankara's hands, which aims at maintaining the current status quo for perhaps another 25 or 30 years.

Noting that the Republic of Cyprus is heading towards the European Union, Avrupa stresses that the Turkish Cypriots must say ``stop to Ankara, because the majority of the Turkish Cypriot community are not ``the slaves'' of Ankara.''

Avrupa expresses the opinion that those who are trying to overthrow the so- called government wish only to have the ``chair'' for themselves. According to the paper, the thing which must be changed in the occupied areas is the fact that Ankara controls everything in the pseudostate.

The columnist of the same paper Orhan Selim, in his column under the title ``Opinion'' (25.3.01) asks those who try to overthrow the Eroglu`s so- called government:

``What are you going to do if you become government? Are you going to give back the money to the depositors? Are you going to take the police from the control of the army and put it under civilian control? ...Are you going to give Yasar Blaci back his land taken by the occupiers? Are you going to agree for a federation with Clerides? Are you going to permit those who wish to pass to the South or to the North to do so? Are you going to arrest and send back those who came illegally from Turkey and were given title- deeds, in an unjust way? When the (Turkish) ambassador or the General says no, are you going to hit your fist on the table? If you are going to do all these we too shall cheer for you, even from now!''

[37] Sener Levent: 34,000 title-deeds have been given to the settlers

According to Sener Levent of Avrupa (26.3. 01), 34 thousand title-deeds have been given to settlers from Turkey since 1974. Mr. Levent says, inter alia, the following:

``Which is our most important slogan? This country is ours. Is it really ours? How did you come to this conclusion? With what title-deed? With what document? How much property has been given to the people who were brought to the island from Turkey after 1974? How many title-deeds? 34 thousands! That is, more than half of Northern Cyprus. Then tell me. Is a property for which we do not posses title-deeds ours? Which country is ours'...''
