[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] MEHMET ALI TALAT: THE TURKISH SIDE/S POLICY ON CYPRUS IS FACILITATINGTHE PROMOTION OF THE GREEK CYPRIOTS/ EU ACCESSION COURSE KIBRIS (9.3.01) reports that the leader of the Turkish Republican Party (CTP) Mehmet Ali Talat, accompanied by a delegation consisting of Ahmet Derya, Ahmet Uzun and Mehmet Ekingen, visited some occupied villages during the period of Kurban Bayram (Feast of Sacrifice).During the visits Talat talked with the villagers and replied to their questions about the latest economic crisis and the Cyprus problem. Talat criticized the pseudogovernment that due to its incompetence the Turkish Cypriots passed a very difficult feast. Stressing that the logic of "Turkey give, and let/s squander them" has gone bankrupt, Talat said that their economy must be based on stable currency. On the Cyprus issue, pointing out that the Greek Cypriot side is exploiting their mistakes, Talat said: "The most worrying issue is how the solution will be. At this moment, unfortunately the policy that the Turkish Cypriot side follows is facilitating the promotion of the Greek Cypriots/ EU accession course. Despite the fact that we withdrew from the UN proximity talks, we also abstain from the EU accession negotiations being carried out by the Greek Cypriots under the title of Cyprus. With this attitude we make things easier for them. Now the Greek Cypriots tell us: "Let the areas which are under government control enter first and when there will be a solution you will enter." Finally, Talat said that the Turkish Cypriots can overcome their problems and difficulties only if they demostrate the necessary political will. [02] SPLIT IN THE UNION OF TURKISH CYPRIOT SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERSToday/s (9.3.01) Turkish Cypriot newspapers refer to the split that was caused inside the Union of Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers (KTOEOS).According to Avrupa (9.3.01) the meeting of the Union of Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers planned for March 10, was postponed for the 17th of March, because a group of teachers announced that they would not attend the meeting. This group calls itself "the group of independent teachers" and it is against those who say: "We do not want Turkey". They also demand the resignation of today/s union administrative council. In addition they claim that they have been organized in order to protect their rights and the political equality of the pseudostate. The Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and the military authorities gave their full support to the group, the paper concludes. [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS[03] TURKISH JOURNALIST ASSESES THAT THE CYPRUS PROBLEM IS ONE OF THE MAJOROBSTACLES FOR TURKEY/S EU ACCESSION COURSEThe Cyprus problem and the Copenhagen criteria are "on the top of the agenda" in relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU), according to Hasan Cemal, a columnist of Milliyet (8.3.01). Mr. Cemal notes that "Turkey/s accession negotiations to the EU could not begin without the consent of Greece and therefore, our relations with the EU could be derailed". Reminding that EU Commissioner for Enlargement Gunter Verheugen had warned Mesut Yilmaz during the World Economic Forum in Davos, that Cyprus would become a full member of the EU even without solving political problem. Among other things, Mr. Cemal expresses the view that Turkey is moving too slow towards the EU and notes that the reason for this is the fact that some circles in the country "are not flexible" on this matter. He says that the above mentioned circles are the Nationalist Action Party of Devlet Bahsili and the army. [23] TURKISH CYPRIOT JOURNALIST BLAMES BAD ADMINISTRATION IN THE PSEUDOSTATEFOR ALL EVILS According to what Lutfi Ozter, journalist of "Halkin Sesi" (9.3.01), writes today in his column "From the agenda", the source of all evils in the occupied areas is the bad administration. Mr. Ozter notes that the criminal acts have been increased in the pseudostate and adds that while the big roberries are due to greed, the reason of the minor ones is "hunger, unemployment and desperation.""Our administrators are not taking any measures to create employment opportunities and to minimize unemployment", writes Ozter adding that "for this reason, the constant increase of roberries is inevitable." "Yesterday we were better than today", says Ozter stressing that unless those who are responsible for this situation leave power, "tomorrow would be worse than today."
