  • [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] The ``Financial Protocol'' between Turkey and the occupied areas was put

into effect According to Turkish Daily News, newspaper (28.2.01), the decree regarding the Cabinet/s approval of the ``Economic and Financial Cooperation Protocol'' between Turkey and the occupied areas was put into effect following its publication in the official gazette. In line with the ``protocol'', Turkey will provide $350 million to the occupied areas within a three-year period starting from 2001. The ``protocol'' also envisages measures to ensure balance in public finance, social security expenditures and swift amendments in ``legislative and administrative'' structures in the pseudostate.

[02] Rauf Denktash: The economy is about to collapse According to KIBRIS (1.3.01) , the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf

Denktash, commenting on the state of the economy in the occupied areas after the economic crisis in Turkey, which gravely affected the economy of the pseudostate, yesterday said that the main pillar of the economy is about to collapse.

Denktash made the statements during a meeting he had in occupied Nicosia with Mehmet Bahadir, author of the book ``The Turks in Cyprus'', and Hasan Keskin, author of the book ``Famagusta from Sancak to Heroism''. Denktash called on young Turkish Cypriots to read books and learn what happened in the past, and added: ``The youth must understand what we went through, how we suffered, because some think that the Greeks were fighting for freedom and Greek and Turkish fascists were an obstacle to this struggle for freedom''.

Denktash also claimed that the Greek Cypriots are still trying to turn the Turkish Cypriots into a minority.

Referring to the economic crisis Denktash blamed Eroglu/s pseudo-government for the plight of the Turkish Cypriots and noted that the banks must relieve the people from the heavy loans with very high interest rates.

Denktash also repeated that the Turkish Cypriots need the help of their ``motherland'' Turkey in order to find a way out of the economic crisis.

[03] Split in the Turkish Cypriot Associations of Great Britain According to KIBRIS (1.3.01) a quarrel has begun again in the Council of

Turkish Cypriot Associations in England . KIBRIS reports that the quarrel occurred during the visit to London of the so-called Minister of ``Foreign Affairs and Defence'', Tahsin Ertugruloglu.

The reason for the quarrel is said to be the establishment of the ``Committee for the Human Rights of the Turks in Northern Cyprus'', by the President of the Society for Assistance to the Mehmetcik, Arif Tahir Erisen.

Erisen has been accused of creating an organization outside the Council and has been sent to the disciplinary committee in order to be expelled. As a result his organization decided to leave the Council. Today Ertugruloglu is expected

Today Ertugruloglu is expected to conclude his meetings in London and return to the occupied part of Cyprus on Saturday.

[04] Mehmet Ali Talat: Integration with Turkey will not bring peace neither to Turkey nor to the Turkish Cypriots

According to YENIDUZEN (1.3.01), the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat, yesterday gave a press conference at the party headquarters in occupied Nicosia, during which he referred, inter alia, to the current economic crisis.

Talat said the Turkish Cypriots who trusted the Turkish Lira were disappointed because they lost 40% of the value of their money overnight, and expressed his opposition to the integration, and added: ``The economic and political integration of the Turkish Cypr7iot community to Turkey will not bring peace to Turkey or the Turkish Cypriots. The monetary integration associated with it is contrary to the realities of Cyprus and will not only cause problems to the economy but at the same time it will weaken the political institutions''.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[05] Sener Levent: Resisting while we collapse Writing in his regular column ``Corner'' under the title ``Resisting While We

Collapse'', the chief editor of AVRUPA newspaper (1.3.01), Sener Levent, says the following:

``Look at the news. The president of the Parliament, Ertugrul Hasipoglu, has suggested to the President of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Omer Izgi, to declare the TRNC as a free zone.

Who whose property is selling to whom? Who is the owner of this land? Is it Mr. Izgi? Is Mr. Izgi the man who decides what is going to happen with our country? If Omer Izgi wants, can he make this place here a free zone, or a forbidden zone or a military zone?

    What does Mr. Ertugrul think?

Does this country belong to Turkey?

What right has this man to put our country on sale?

Cyprus is my country. It is our country. If we are not asked about this land, then who will be asked?

Has any other President of a Parliament in the world proposed to another President of a Parliament a thing like that?

In our country everybody and everything has collapsed. The nation is being drowned in the waves of Ankara. There is only one reason for the collapse:

the lack of a solution in Cyprus and the architects of this situation, who are the flatterers in Ankara and in Cyprus.

Ankara is imposing this non-solution to us and for 27 years it is driving us into utter misery.

The sultanate of Denktash and the egoists who rule us for so many years are a product of Ankara. Even now when we are going down the abyss nobody cares. They still insist on not solving the Cyprus problem. They are trying to overcome the crisis by saying: ``When Turkey sneezes, we catch a cold''. What if she sneezes. Turkey is vomiting blood like a tubercular. Yesterday a friend called me from Ankara and said with pain:

We were in vain making fun of the Natashas (the Russian girls who work in the Cabarets). There are now thousands of women in Turkey who became like them.

The Press in Turkey is going through a terrible crisis, similar to which did not exist before. The regional publications have been forced to stop. The workers are waiting massively in front of the door. Even journalists with 40 years/ experience have been fired. Neither Yalcin Dogan, nor Duygu Asena remained. Even Bedri Koraman and Turan Selcuk lived this experience. See what Mine Kirikkanat, an editor of ``RADIKAL'' says about this:

``The signatures of Demirel and Ecevit are under Turkey/s devaluation of its currency once more, its crushing from another IMF plan, under the shameless rich people, the poor people and the terrorists, the supporters of the religious law in the name of thinking. This picture is your product. Look at it well. Do not try in vain. You have made this history, but we are going to write it. We will write it on your graves, when the time comes''.

    .................

We are going to do the same. Not now. When the time comes. Then no one could go to Ankara and bargain our country. We will free ourselves from all of them. From all those who think only of their own prosperity and do not care even if the others are dead. From all those who have turned our land into a prison camp.

From all those directors who clean with their handkerchief the window of the Minister/s car, from all those incapable people who cross their hands on their belly before the military commanders and the Ambassadors.

We are going to free ourselves from all of them. Even if we are a small community of a small country, we shall not be the dinner of those who think that they are big fishes! We too are going to write on their graves this history''.
