[01] Top level crisis in Turkish government after the shortest ever National Security Council meeting

According to NTV (19.2.01) 12.00 hours news bulletin, a crisis broke out at the top of the Turkish ruling echelon during today/s National Security Council, NSC, meeting.

Only minutes after the start of the National Security Council meeting the Prime Minister, Mr. Bulent Ecevit, his partners in the coalition government and all the members of the government side taking part in the meeting left the Presidential Palace and went to the Prime Minister/s Office.

In a short statement to the press Ecevit said unbecoming allegations on the part of President Sezer, contrary to the Turkish political traditions, were levelled that forced him to leave.

According to press reports today/s agenda of the National Security Council included issues, such as the National program, to be submitted to the EU, the Cyprus problem, the Ocalan issue, privatization of Banks and the scandal in the Ministry of energy.

The Council of Ministers is currently having an extraordinary meeting to assess the crisis.

[02] The Turkish Cypriot leader concluded his trip to Izmir and returned to occupied Cyprus

According to Ankara Anatolia News Agency (16.2.01) the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash, was awarded an honorary doctorate on Friday by the Nine September University of Izmir for ``his efforts and contributions to the rightful cause of the Turkish Cypriots''.

Denktash, who addressed the ceremony, also gave a speech on the ``Recent Situation in Cyprus''.

In his speech Denktash referred to the historical process in Cyprus, and said they exerted efforts to prevent Cyprus from becoming a repetition of ``Crete Island'' and the realization of Enosis.

Denktash also said that in bilateral meetings, they never made concessions from the position that Turkish Cypriots were not a minority on the island and that there was no progress in the talks so far because the Greek Cypriot side continued its target which started in 1963, and saw the occupation regime and Turkish Republic as an obstacle to their goal. Denktash said efforts were underway to cause problems between Turkey and the occupied areas.

Denktash claimed that the Greek Cypriots played their last trump card to defeat Turkish Cypriots and keep Turkey at distance, saying:

``This trump card is the application of the Greek Cypriot side to the EU. The Greek Cypriot side, in case of its membership to the EU, may demand help from the EU in the future claiming that an occupation is in question on the island. So, bringing Turkey and the EU face to face on Cyprus territory may be in question. Greek Cypriots, who are getting prepared for this, are getting armed intensively''.

Speaking to journalists at the Adnan Menderes Airport in Izmir prior to his departure for occupied Cyprus, and in reply to a relevant question, Mr. Denktash repeated his statements to CyBC that he would resign if the pseudostate were to be recognized. Denktash said, ``In an interview, this correspondent insistently told me that I did not want any agreement on the island and that I had been preventing reconciliation. I told him that I wanted an agreement based on the principle of two states on the island. Recognition of our state/s existence is the cornerstone of any agreement and reconciliation on Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots have been in favour of reconciliation. We are ready to sign an agreement recognizing our state/s existence. I may resign after reaching such an agreement.''

[03] ``Open University'' inaugurated in the occupied areas HURRIYET newspaper, (19.2.01) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr.

Rauf Denktash, and the Rector of Anadolu University, Professor Engin Atac, last Saturday inaugurated the ``Open University'' of Anadolu University in occupied Nicosia.

According to the report the buildings of the ``Open University'' cover 3, 320 square metres, they consist of a 3-block campus, they were completed in five years and their architecture is of the traditional Eskisehir style.

Speaking at the ceremony, Denktash referred to the Cyprus problem and said that protecting a ``state'' is as difficult as founding it, adding that the youngsters have to strengthen their ties with Turkey and shouldn/t dream of being second class persons in Cyprus.

The psuedostate/s Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said in his part that they try to make the occupied areas a region of universities, adding that the pseudostate opens to the world indirectly by its universities.

Finally, the so-called Minister of Education Mehmet Altinay, speaking at the ceremony said that 25,000 students were studying in the occupied areas/ five ``universities'' and ``Open Universities'' recalling that the aim of attracting 40,000 students will definitely be realized.

[04] Panel discussion on the Cyprus problem was organized by the Turkish Embassy in London

According to KIBRIS (17.02.01) the Turkish embassy in London, has organized a panel discussion on ``The Cyprus problem and search for settlement opportunities''.

According to the paper, all the speakers at the panel claimed that the road to the settlement passes through the recognition of the identity and the sovereignty of the pseudostate.

KIBRIS says that among the audience was Sir David Hannay, the British Special Representative for Cyprus.

Speaking at the panel, former Turkish Foreign Minister Prof. Mumtaz Soysal, claimed that the key to the settlement is the recognition of the occupied area. There is no other settlement in reality, neither on the negotiation table nor in the framework of the law.

Speaking at the same panel the so-called Foreign and Defence Ministry Undersecretary of the pseudostate Osman Ertug said that ``proximity talks served nothing but deepening the differences''.

One of the British speakers of the panel, Prof. Clement Dodd, claimed that ``there is no other way than to recognize TRNC''.

[05] The so-called East Mediterranean University had contacts with American Universities

According to KIBRIS (17.2.01) a delegation from the so-called East Mediterranean University (EMU) which left for USA to hold contacts with the Central Connecticut State University, CCSU, (New York) and Incarnate World University - IWU - (San Antonio) has returned to the occupied areas.

The delegation said that its contacts in the USA were very useful.

[06] A delegation from the occupied areas to attend international Journalists/ conference in Dakkar

According to KIBRISLI (17.2.01) a six-member delegation headed by the so- called deputy chairman of the Turkish Cypriot press council, Mesut Gunsar, will take part at the 8th International Journalists Conference to be held in the Bangladeshi capital, Dakkar.

The delegation will leave the occupied area today for Dakkar.
