  • [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] Ataturkist Thought Association established in occupied Cyprus According to KIBRISLI (13.2.01) the Ataturkist Thought Association has

called on the Greek Cypriots and the whole world to recognize the existence and equality of the ``TRNC''. The association stated that any solution to be attained on this basis will be the guarantee of peace.

The Ataturkist Thought Association chairman and administrative council members gave a news conference in occupied Nicosia yesterday and presented their founding declaration. Association Chairman Goktan Guler defined the goal of the association as consolidating the unity and solidarity among the individuals living in the occupied areas and institutionalizing the ``state''. Guler remarked that the members will work to ensure that Turkish Cypriot youths adopt the association as a way of life.

[02] Denktash claims Greeks should admit resorting to genocide against Turks According to Ankara Anatolia (12.2.01), the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Rauf

Denktash stated that Greek Cypriots and Greeks should stop denying that they attempted a genocide against Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus and this constituted the reason for the separation that started in 1963 between the two sides on the island.

In a written statement sent to TAK news agency on Monday, Denktash alleged that the Greek Cypriot administration was still carrying out a genocide plan in close cooperation with Greece.

``Not a single Turk was left in Crete after a 69-year long systematic genocide practice. This is not the product of the democratic administration of the Greeks'', Denktash said. ``Makarios proudly announced that he was using the Crete model in Cyprus. Turkish Cypriots, starting in 1955, were forced to emigrate. Hundreds of them died, thousands were left unemployed. The Greek Administration pressured the Turks to quit their constitutional rights and accept the Greek Cypriots as the sole legal government of the island. Only Turkey`s legal intervention prevented this genocide become hundred percent successful.

The Greek administration is continuing its genocide plans in cooperation with Greece under the false title of the Cyprus government. We shouldn/t be surprised if one day they say Turkish Cypriots had attempted genocide in Cyprus'', Denktash ended his statement.

[03] CIIM scholarship for Turkish Cypriots a ``scandal'' according to a Turkish Cypriot newspaper

Under banner headlines ``Scandal'' in its front page, KIBRISLI (13.2.01) refers to an advertisement by the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM) offering a full-tuition MBA scholarship to Greek and Turkish Cypriots sponsored by the Cyprus Development Bank.

The article is critical of the advertisement and wonders what would happen if a Turkish bank which operates in the occupied areas were to offer scholarships to students who live in the free areas.

[04] Ertugruloglu: Views Akinci expressed in Sussex not binding on ``government''

According to BIRLIK (13.2.01) the so-called Foreign Affairs and Defense Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu has stated that the views expressed by the so- called Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Akinci on the proximity talks at a conference in Sussex reflected either the party line or his own personal opinions, adding that they are not binding on the ``government''. Reiterating the fact that a new negotiating process on the Cyprus issue can be included on the agenda only after the existence of the ``TRNC'' is accepted, Ertugruloglu added that there has been no change or deviation from the official policy regarding the Cyprus issue the Turkish side is pursuing together with the motherland.

In a written statement he issued today, Ertugruloglu said that the views expressed by Akinci, who participated in a conference in Sussex held between 5 and 8 February, on the Cyprus issue, are binding only on his party and himself. He added that the National Unity Party (UBP) - Communal Liberation Party (TKP) ``coalition government program'' clearly indicates that foreign policy and the Cyprus issue will be determined together with Turkey, the motherland. Recalling that the decision regarding the proximity talks was adopted and is being implemented in line with this program, Ertugruloglu reiterated that the proximity talks have ended and that there will be no sixth round. He stressed that a new negotiating process can be included on the agenda only after the existence of the ``TRNC'' is accepted. Ertugruloglu continued: There has been no change or deviation from the official policy regarding the Cyprus issue the ``TRNC'' is pursuing together with the motherland. The views expressed by Mr. Akinci should be assesses as either personal or as the party line.

[05] Denktash to be honoured by Turkish University According to KIBRIS (13.2.01) the Nine September University, (NSU), Izmir,

Western Turkey, has decided to award the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Rauf Denktash with honorary Doctorate Degree for his activities and the respect he is enjoying in the international field.

In order to receive the award Mr. Denktash will leave for Izmir on Thursday 15 February 2001.

On 16 February, Mr. Denktash will give a lecture at the School of Economics and Management Sciences of the NSU on ``the latest situation in Cyprus''.

[06] Investors/ debts to bank to be rescheduled KIBRIS (13.2.01) reports that a meeting was held at Mr. Rauf Denktash/s

Office today to discuss the situation of investors who took loans from the Development Bank and who are having difficulties regarding the payment of their loans. At the meeting a decision was reached to continue the implementation of the decision the Development Bank/s Administrative Council reached in January. The decision envisages an agreement between the Development Bank and the investors on rescheduling the debts and the endorsement of that agreement by ``courts''.

The meeting was attended by the so-called Assembly Speaker, Ertugrul Hasipoglu, ``Prime Minister'', Dervis Eroglu, ``Economy and Finance Minister'' Mehmet Bayram, the Turkish ambassador to Nicosia, the ``Deputy Assembly Speaker'', Salih Cosar, the ``chief public prosecutor'', and the Director of the Development Bank. Representatives from the various sectors, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot Hotel Owners/ Union, and the leader of the Investors/ Union were invited to the meeting that lasted for two hours and their requests were heard.
