[01] Turkish President qualifies confederation as only solution for Cyprus

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 23.6.00), addressing university students during his illegal visit to the occupied area, Turkish President Ahmet Sezer, inter alia, said the so-called embargoes must be lifted and added: "Turkey is doing its utmost to achieve this in the international platform. We hope that all the relevant sides to the issue will also realize that the embargoes constitute a great obstacle on the road to a solution, and they will eliminate this obstacle".

President Sezer claimed: "While a solution is ready and available, it is impossible to attain a result because of the distorted mentality of the Greek Cypriots. The solution consists of a two-state confederation. There are two different peoples and two separate states in Cyprus. This is the only solution that allows these two states to cooperate and to live together in peace under a common roof".

[02] Turkish Cypriot "delegation" leaves for Council of Europe meeting in Strasbourg

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (5:00 hours, 25.6.00), a so-called assembly delegation headed by so-called assembly Ertugrul Hasipoglu left the occupied area en route to Strasbourg to attend the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) meeting.

In a statement to illegal BRT Hasipoglu said that these PACE meetings are different from other meetings. Pointing out that the sports embargo imposed on the "TRNC" will be raised on 29 June, Hasipoglu noted that it is possible that a conclusion will be reached regarding the embargo during the meetings. Hasipoglu explained that before the discussion on the sports embargo, the Turkish Cypriot "delegation" will hold meetings with PACE Speaker Lord Russell and the heads of the committees on Cyprus.

[03] Talat calls for `politically equal/ Turkish Cypriot participation in EU process

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 23.6.00) Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Mehmet Ali Talat has declared that the UN talks on Cyprus are being conducted between two politically equal sides, adding that this equality must be extended into the EU membership negotiations process as well. Talat met with Mattias Sonne, German Foreign Ministry southeast Europe desk chief who is currently visiting Cyprus.

In a statement before the meeting, Talat stressed that the CTP believes that the EU accession process is not being conducted justly because the Turkish Cypriot side, which is politically equal to the Greek Cypriot side, is being excluded from the process. He pointed out that the UN talks on Cyprus are being conducted between two politically equal sides, adding:

This should be extended to the EU process as well. Talat underlined that a way must be found to ensure that the Turkish Cypriots participate in the EU process on an equal footing with the Greek Cypriots. He said: "This is essential for Cyprus/ future EU membership. The Turkish Cypriots/ participation in the EU process as a politically equal side will also help in the solution of the Cyprus problem".

Warning that important problems could arise if the EU accession negotiations continue without the participation of the Turkish Cypriots, Talat expressed the belief that some of obstacles on the road to the EU have been eliminated following the granting of EU candidacy status to Turkey.

In his statement before the meeting, the German official said he will be pleased to hear the views of especially the opposition with regard to the EU membership process. Noting that he wants to learn the CTP/s views regarding the EU process, Sonne said he wanted to hear the CTP/s proposals to secure the Turkish Cypriots/ participation in the EU process.

[04] Ertugruloglu leaves for Islamic Foreign Ministers meet in Malaysia

Illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (5:00 hours, 24.6.00) reports that so-called foreign affairs and defense minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu left the occupied area of Cyprus for Malaysia to participate in the Islamic countries foreign ministers meeting to be held in Kuala Lumpur between 27 and 30 June.

Namik Korhan, "foreign affairs ministry political affairs director", and Heves Gazi from the "promotion directorate" are accompanying Ertugruloglu to Kuala Lumpur. The problems of the Islamic world, including the Cyprus question, will be discussed at the Islamic foreign ministers conference. Various resolutions on the issues to be discussed are expected to be adopted. Ertugruloglu is expected to return to the island on 2 July.

[05] Eroglu says Morphou not on agenda

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 25.6.00), so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu, speaking during the occupied Morphou Orange Festival, inter alia, said that the economic problems in the occupied area affect Morphou in particular.

"One of the main factors adversely affecting Morphou is the worry that the region may be given back to the Greek Cypriot administration in the event that an agreement is secured", Eroglu noted adding that this is an unnecessary worry. Eroglu continued: "Morphou will definitely not be given back. The Turkish Cypriots have left their Turkish imprints on the region. For this reason, remove this issue out of your agenda and go on with your lives." Stressing that it is not necessary to create panic with claims that Morphou is going and gone, Eroglu added that an agreement will be possible only if it does not make concessions on equality and sovereignty and does not dilute Turkey/s guarantee.

[06] Water pipeline construction slated to begin in 2001

According to Anatolia Agency (8:25 hours, 25.6.00) the Turkish - "TRNC" water pipeline project is being implemented.

If the necessary funding is secured, the construction of the pipeline will being in 2001.

The $350-million funding to be raised will first be used to pay for engineering services, and the construction investments will be financed after that.

Of the 108-km water pipeline, 78 km will be under water and 30 km above ground. The project will pace the way for the transportation of 75 million cubic meters of water annually.

The project, which will be financed entirely by foreign capital, incorporates the construction of the Alakopru Dam in Turkey and the Panagra Dam in the occupied area. The agreements on the construction of the water pipeline and the two dams are expected to be singed during the course of 2000.

[07] Sezer: Cyprus Geneva talks will be held

According to Turkish Daily News (14.6.00), ending a week of discussion and uncertainty over the future of the Cyprus proximity talks process, Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer disclosed that the talks would continue as planned, but Turkish Cypriots will demonstrate their displeasure with a UN Security Council decision extending the mandate of a UN force on the island only through a deal with the Cyprus government.

Sezer made the unexpected statement that Denktash would travel to Geneva for the third round of proximity talks at a dinner hosted in his honour by the Turkish Cypriot leader.

He stressed, however, that the pseudostate will react to the Security Council/s decision to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) by implementing a series of measures against the force.

Turkish Cypriot leader Denktash had earlier told the newspaper that the measures against the UNFICYP would be disclosed after the Turkish president completed his trip to the occupied area.

The measures the pseudostate is planning to implement against the UNFICYP range from restricting their entry into the occupied area through the buffer zone, to closure of the two UN bases in the occupied area.

Another measure is to demand rent for buildings occupied by the UNFICYP and to ask UN vehicles register with Turkish Cypriot insurance companies.

[08] "Security forces" commander brands "traitors" those who oppose Turkish troops presence

According to KIBRIS (25.6.00) the commander of the so-called security forces, Brigadier General Ali Nihat Ozeyranli, speaking to the newly conscripted draftees during their oath-taking ceremony, strongly criticized those Turkish Cypriots who oppose the Turkish occupation troops presence in the occupied area. General Ozeyranli has branded these people as traitors and said that "they will be made to pay the price for this treason, because treason has a price."

Commenting on Brigadier General Ozeyranli/s threats, YENIDUZEN (26.6.00) demands sending "the Security Forces to the barracks".

The paper says that the General Ozeyranli/s speech is unbecoming of a general and is contrary to the democratic rights of the communities/ freedom of expression. YENIDUZEN wonders whether Ozeyranli/s statement on the eve of the 5 July proximity talks is a new manoeuvring by those who are against a settlement in Cyprus.

YENIDUZEN also wonders whether general Ozeyranli is indirectly answering to Turkish President Ahmet Sezer who declared that proximity talks will definitely start on 5th July in Geneva.

AVRUPA (26.6.00) in its turn strongly criticizes General Ozeyranli/s statement and says that while the trial of AVRUPA is going on Ozeyranli, by making such statements, has already sentenced AVRUPA without considering "the court/s judgement". It says "There is no need for the trial, Mr. Ali Nihat Ozeyranli Bey. You have given your decision! Is there any need to drag on further? Call the hitman to come here! And let him annihilate all the Cypriot traitors!".

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[09] Sener Levent: "My homeland is under occupation"

Sener Levent, writing in AVRUPA (22.6.00) under the title "Occupation", says: "My homeland is under occupation".

From its mountains to its plains and down to its sea shores.

Instead of smelling the aroma of jasmine, they have massed its soil with gun powder.

They have left me a narrow path like the bridge of Sirat (Tr. Note: in Islam the Sirat bridge is the bridge that leads from this world to Paradise. It is more slender than a hair and sharper than a sword).

My breathing now depends on the permission to be given by a general from Sanliurfa (a town in southeast Turkey).

In this land where I was born, they have shot people who talked like I do. We were unable to find the killers of these people. We will not be able to find them. We have never investigated the killings anyway.

We have endured untold sufferings. They have said unbecoming things against those whose blood was shedded.

They continue without shame and any pangs of conscience to curse these people, whose killers still remain at large.

    They have branded them traitors!

My homeland is under ocucpation. My country where I was born, I grew up, and on whose streets I played tipcat and marbles, is under ocucpation.

I have no say in my own country.

In my country, it is the generals who have a say and are listened to.

Furthermore, my easy-going, obedient and submisive compatriots visit them and express their loyalty, allegiance and their gratitude to these generals.

My compatriots always tell them that they owe their lives to them (to the generals).

However, if there is a traffic-jam caused by a military convoy, without shouting, my compatriots curse these generals.

My compatriots put up with the beating in the army until they are discharged.

    My homeland is under occupation...

Only the occupiers can decide whether I am a patriot or a traitor.

    When they get angry

    - They curse us, calling us dogs. However, nobody asks them why they call us dogs. My compatriots again visit them and again express them their gratitude and reiterate that they owe their lives to the generals.

This is the way life goes on here.

My homeland is udner occupation. And they file lawsuits against me in order to prevent me from saying and writing these things. My compatriots brand me as a traitor because I refuse to express my gratitude to my `saviours/.

The distrainers come to our office, they take everything and go.

They lock up everything in a store house, even the computers that write and print this article.

The man, who in the midst of the inferno handed his wife and children over to the enemy and arranged their safe departure from this inferno, was somehow able to win the law suit of nationalism.

And for some reason or other, 16 year old youths guarding the streets with sten-guns in their hands were branded as traitors...

Those who deserted and fled are considered national heroes! And the so- called leftist boys have started giving lessons of patriotism to others, who in 1974, declared `I will not fight in an imperialist war/ and found a way to slip out of their homeland without fighting.

My homeland is under occupation. And I am being tried in my occupied country/s courts every day.

Those who are unaware that my country is under occupation play the game of having a parliament and a government.

However, this game is not as interesting and attractive as the tipcat we used to play.

I do want my country back. Not only the land in Kermia but all of it.

It does not matter whether the distrainers come or the Sultan of Ankara...

This sword will one day certainly cut this knot!".
