[01] Turkish President to pay 2-day illegal visit to pseudostate

According to TRT 1 Television (10:00 hours 20.6.00), Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will pay an illegal visit to the occupied area of Cyprus at the invitation of Rauf Denktash. Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and State Minister Sukru Gurel will accompany Sezer on his visit, which will begin on 22 June and will last two days.

[02] UN envoy De Soto asks Turkish Cypriots to attend proximity talks

According to TRT 1 Television (10:00 and 11:42 hours, 20.6.00) Alvaro De Soto, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan/s special Cyprus envoy, has asked the Turkish side to participate in the third round Cyprus proximity talks, which are slated to begin on 5 July. De Soto was received by Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem at the Foreign Ministry yesterday. During the meeting, the special envoy was informed about Turkey/s views regarding the quest for a Cyprus solution and about the unease felt over the latest UN Security Council resolution.

Replying to questions after the 45 minute meeting, de Soto said: ``We hope that these recent developments will not adversely affect the Secretary General/s efforts regarding Cyprus. These developments have demonstrated the importance of a lasting solution on the island''.

Asked to comment on the possibility that the Turkish Cypriot side will not attend the proximity talks, de Soto remarked that the Secretary General issued the relevant invitations and expressed the hope that there will not be any change with regard to the participation of the Turkish Cypriot side.

He further said that Turkey and Greece should work harder to reach a comprehensive solution on Cyprus problem during the third round of talks which are expected to start in Geneva on July 5.

Both sides in Cyprus should find solutions to the basic problems that ``divide them'', De Soto said and added that their priority will be to help both sides agree on a solution.

When asked if he had an impression from the Turkish side that they will attend the third round of talks in Geneva, De Soto said ``they hoped the Turkish side would attend the talks.'' He said the talks are continuing according to the schedule and added that they hoped no changes would occur in this schedule.

Responding to another question, De Soto said he will convey his meeting with Cem to Annan, but he declined to tell the content of his message for Annan.

Do Soto said the atmosphere for a comprehensive solution has become more favourable in the last one year. There could be some obstacles on the way, he noted. He stated that there may even be some circles who do not want a solution. He said they are hoping that the sides on the island would continue their dialogue and they would ignore the views of the circles which do not want a solution.

When a reporter asked if the Greek Cypriot side is getting closer to the confederation idea, De Soto declined to make a comment by saying this is the most critical point of the matter.

[03] New Turkish envoy in occupied area

According to KIBRIS (21.6.00) Ambassador Hayati Guven has been appointed as Turkey/s new envoy to the occupied area, replacing Ertugrul Apakan who is recalled to Ankara.

Prior to his appointment to his new post in the occupied area, Ambassador Hayati Guven was serving at the Turkish Foreign Ministry as the Deputy Director of the North East Mediterranean Desk.

[04] TRT team to help illegal Bayrak

According to KIBRIS (21.6.00), with a view to developing and modernizing the quality of the illegal Bayrak Radio Television broadcasts, a project developed jointly with Turkey/s State Radio Television Corporation (TRT) will soon be put into operation.

KIBRIS further reports that a five-man technical team from Turkish Radio Television (TRT) headed by Mete Coskun, deputy director of the TRT Studios, arrived in the occupied area and started working.

KIBRIS adds that Turkey/s Council of Ministers has allocated funds to realize this project.

[05] Denktash on Cyprus/ geopolitical importance

According to KIBRIS (21.6.00) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, speaking to a group of students from Turkey who are currently visiting the occupied area, said that ``Ottomans had occupied the island because Cyprus was either protecting or threatening the southern shores of Anatolia''.

He went on and claimed that this geopolitic situation is still valid and claimed that ``one who rules Anatolia cannot give up Cyprus''.
