According to illegal Bayrak Radio (1530 hours, 5/6/00) a Greek Cypriot soldier, who allegedly crossed into the occupied area in the region to the east of Lefkosia, was caught by the Turkish Cypriot so-called security forces.

According to information provided by the "police" press office, Georgios Kassianides, a 21-year-old uniformed and unarmed member of the Greek Cypriot National Guard, was spotted by the "security forces" and captured. He was brought before a "court" and remanded in custody for three days.

[02] TURKISH, NORWEGIAN PRIME MINISTERS DISCUSS NORWEGIAN EMBARGO ON "TRNC"

POTATO EXPORTS According to Anatolia Agency (1319 hours, 5/6/00), Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg held a news conference on the issues discussed between the two countries/ delegations in Oslo. The sides stressed that bilateral relations, which have been following a positive course for some years, should be further strengthened.

Anatolia reports that "sources said the ban put by Norway on imports of potatoes from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) had also been discussed in the meeting".

Moreover, Birlik (6.6.00) reports on the issue and says that the Norwegian Prime Minister Stoltenberg explained that a Norwegian businessman has recoursed to court in order to change the decision banning the import of pseudostate potatoes. Stoltenberg added: "I too want to eat Cyprus potatoes. For this reason, we wait for the results of the legal procedure".

[03] TURKISH BUSINESSMAN SPEAKS OF WALL OF SHAME IN CYPRUS

According to KIBRIS (4.6.2000), Turkish businessman Huseyin Bayraktar, who is the Chairman of the Bayraktar Holdings Executive Committee, answered questions put to him by KIBRIS/ correspondent Hasan Hasturer as follows:

KIBRIS: What do you think when one mentions the Cyprus problem?

BAYRAKTAR: What do I think when one mentions Cyprus problem? On Friday we paid a visit to the TRNC/s President. After that I visited the wall of shame. What is that? They put up barrels, and said from this point to that point is the buffer zone, beyond this point is the Greek Cypriot sector, from here to that point is the Turkish sector. Those who created this should be ashamed. It is a shame at a time when the world is getting integrated and is going towards globalization. We are in very good dialogue with the Greek Cypriots as human beings. There are people who are fanning this issue. Either politicians or enemy states. For this reason, when one mentions Cyprus, one thinks, let this wall be removed and let the two countries love each other.

KIBRIS: However, this cannot be realized in a one-sided manner, can it?

BAYRAKTAR: I do not say that they are the only ones to be blamed or that we are to be blamed. The real blame lies with those people in the past who instigated this problem. The esteemed Foreign Minister Ismail Cem is a very close friend of mine. On two or three occasions we had lunch together on our boats. On all occasions I said something to him.

KIBRIS: Did you discuss the Cyprus problem?

BAYRAKTAR: We always discussed Cyprus. We discussed Greco-Turkish dialogue. I said the following: The Greek Cypriot people love the Turkish people very much. However, there are people who do everything in order not to let this love materialize. Remove the politicians. There will be neither a Cyprus problem, nor an Aegean problem. Let everybody meet at a minimum programme.

KIBRIS: What do you think of Cyprus as an investor? Turkey ventured war for Cyprus, however, the investors always stand aloof.

BAYRAKTAR: Let us first accept the following: Let us see what could be achieved in Cyprus. When you talk about investors, then the issue here is the economy. Any investment, if it is not economic, it hurts the investor not lightly but very deeply. It really hurts. For this reason the investments to be made here should be in accordance with the island/s character. What is that? It is tourism. It is possible to make a good investment in tourism here. It could be trade. We are here now within this framework. Cyprus needs investments that will create jobs.

KIBRIS: What do you remember about Cyprus?

BAYRAKTAR: I remember a lot of things about Cyprus. If you ask me about the time of my youth, we burned a lot of effigies of Makarios while we were at the University. That was the trend those days. Now I wonder why we burned Makarios/ effigies at the Beyasit Square (Istanbul). While we were burning in Istanbul, they were burning in Athens (as published).

KIBRIS: What do you think of the future?

BAYRAKTAR: I will say something here that will hurt the people living in Cyprus, but I will say it anyway: You should be a little more disciplined. Let the governments here do their job better.

[04] TURKISH STATE MINISTER HEADS DELEGATION VISITING THE OCCUPIED AREA

KIBRIS (6.6.00) reports that a delegation of 16 senior officials, headed by Turkish State Minister responsible for financial affairs Recep Onal, arrives in the occupied area today.

Denktash will also visit the historic and archaeological sites of the area.

[06] SIR DAVID HANNAY TO GIVE CONFERENCE AT "NEAR EAST UNIVERSITY"

According to Hurriyet KIBRIS (6.6.00) the Turkish Cypriot soccer team Centikaya went to Germany following initiatives of the so-called youth and sports minister, Tansel Doratli.

The chairman of the "Turkish Cypriot Soccer Federation" Omer Adal, who accompanied the team to Germany, said that he had a private meeting with officials from the German Soccer Federation. According to the paper, referring to Greek Cypriot objections to the visit, the German officials said: "Here it is a free country. Nobody can interfere. We cannot allow politics to interfere with sports."

[08] MUFTUZADE TO REMAIN AS SO-CALLED LONDON REPRESENTATIVE

According to KIBRIS (6.6.2000) the "tenure of office" of the so-called London representative of the pseudostate, Hakki Muftuzade, ended on 30 April 2000, and the so-called council of ministers of the pseudostate has extended his "tenure" until 31 July 2000.

KIBRIS reports that the so-called council of ministers has not decided yet who will replace Muftuzade. It says that there are rumours that Muftuzade/s "tenure of office" might be extended for another year.

KIBRIS also lists the names of the so-called representatives of the pseudostate in various countries.

    They are:

Aytug Plumer - New York Ahmet Erdeniz - Washington Hilmi Akil - Brussels Kemal Gokeri - Islamabad Bener Erkmen - Abu Dhabi Zeki Gazioglu - Geneva

    [09] TALAT CRITICIZES INTEGRATION POLICIES

YENIDUZEN (6.6.2000) reports that there was a general debate at the pseudostate/s so-called assembly during which Turkey - occupied area relations were discussed.

Speaking during the debate the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Mehmet Ali Talat strongly criticized the so-called government for turning a blind eye to the problems of the Turkish Cypriots. He said that the so- called Turkey-TRNC protocol favours the Turkish Cypriot investors going to Turkey and that the Turkish businessmen holding the occupied area/s economy in their hands will not be beneficial to the Turkish Cypriot community.

He strongly criticized the integration policies. Talat said: "It is the integration policy that led us into disasters."

He added that with integration the real aim is annexation. Talat then asked: "Don't you think that it will be contrary to the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people as well as to Turkey/s interests in Cyprus if the assumption that the Turkish Cypriots are Turkey/s satellite gains weight?" He said that the RTP will vote against the "protocol".
