[01] Denktash denies Morphou bargaining chip at talks

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (15:30 hours, 1.6.00), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said that Morphou has never been an issue for bargaining at the Cyprus talks. He noted that the problems in the region stem from the indifference of the "government".

The so-called administrative council members of the "Morphou Development Association" called on Denktash and conveyed to him the problems being experienced in the area.

In a statement at the meeting, Denktash said that Morphou has never been an issue for bargaining at the Cyprus proximity talks, adding that press reports on the issue do not reflect the reality. He attacked the pseudo- government for indifference to the problems facing the occupied area and added: "What has this government done so far? It distributed salaries. It received money from Turkey and then spent it. This is all that the government has accomplished".

[02] Russian envoy meets CTP, DP leaders

Illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30) hours, 1.6.00) reports that Russian Ambassador Vladimir Pavlinov called on the CTP (Republican Turkish Party) and the DP (Democratic Party) headquarters and held meetings with the party leaders recently.

In the statements he made during the meetings, Pavlinov expressed the belief that his contacts will be beneficial. He noted that during his visit he will study the Cyprus issue, adding that his aim is to be informed on the issue and to see how Russia can contribute to the solution of this problem.

Speaking at the meeting, CTP leader Mehmet Ali Talat said that Russia, as a UN Security Council member, has for a long time now been interested in the Cyprus issue, adding that it is exerting efforts to find a peaceful solution to the problem. He stressed that the fact that a solution has not been found despite all should not affect morale, adding that one should exert efforts to reach the best possible solution. Talat noted that the CTP is very sensitive toward the Cyprus issue and expressed the belief that Cyprus will be a EU-member federal republic in the future. Pointing out that a solution is absolutely necessary in a bid to secure stability in the region and the island, Talat said that Russia, which is one of the world superpowers, is also in favour of a solution and regional stability. He stressed that Russia has the strength and position to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

[03] Denktash says Greek Cypriots will not get Varosha

According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (15:30 hours, 31.5.00) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has called on the Greek Cypriots who want to have Varosha back "to stop dreaming". He claimed: "We are a state. They want part of this state. A state cannot cut off part of its flesh and give it away".

Denktash was replying to a correspondent/s question during a meeting with colonel Ozgun Oztemel, his aide who retired. Denktash gave the message of a definite no to those who link the lifting of the "embargo" from the pseuodstate to Turkish Cypriot territorial concessions. He said that the Greek Cypriots must first recognize the "TRNC". He said: "They must first recognize our state and realize that this state cannot cut off part of its flesh and give it away. After that, we can talk with them".

He pointed out that the pseudostate/s priority problem is domestic. Even so, he said, the people should not despair. "Our people should not despair and the Greek Cypriots should not have any high hopes", he said.

[04] Denktash, Gurel address meeting of Turks Living Abroad

Anatolia Agency (14:32 hours, 1.6.00) reports that the third Consultation Council meeting of Citizens Living Abroad started in the occupied area on Thursday and speaking in the opening of the meeting, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said that arrival of foreign aid and tourists to "TRNC" is important in overcoming the economic difficulties.

Claiming that the main target of the Greek Cypriot side is to enter EU without an agreement on the island, Denktash said they proposed making an agreement on the principle of "two states", and noted that they can deal with the EU issue after such an agreement. They can never give up the guarantee of Turkey, said Denktash and stressed that security is more important than anything for them.

Turkish State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel said that holding the Consultation Council Meeting of the Citizens Living Abroad in "TRNC" is important.

Speaking in the opening of the meeting, Gurel stated that they don/t regard "TRNC citizens" different from Turkish citizens and they work to give all the rights Turkish citizens have, also to "TRNC citizens".

    [05] Denktash meets Feissel

KIBRIS (2.6.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met yesterday morning with former UN diplomat Gustave Feissel.
