Referring to Greek Cypriots he said: ``Let them please understand this. Let them understand that the existence of our state cannot harm them, that it exists and will continue to exist as the foundation of a lasting agreement, and that an agreement based on the principle of two states will lead us to a conciliation before long''. Claiming that there is no other way, Denktash said that the Greek Cypriots side has left no other alternative. He concluded by saying that if the Greek Cypriot side considers all these ``realities'' with a cool head then maybe a solution might be found. Denktash: No decision on date of proximity talks Rauf Denktash has said that a decision has not yet been reached on the date of the third round of the Cyprus proximity talks which were to begin on 23 May but which were postponed because of President Clerides/ illness. According to Anatolia (8.5.00), Denktash met with the US Ambassador to Cyprus and conferred with him for some time. In reply to a question on the issue during the meeting, Denktash said: ``They said that the date can be changed, at the same time they also said that the date has not changed. This means that a decision has not yet been made''. In reply to a question on the same issue, the US Ambassador said that a few more days are needed to assess the situation. No statement was issued on the content of the meeting. New bank crisis Anatolia Agency (16:31 hours, 8.5.00) reports that the so-called council of ministers of the pseudostate decided to seize the administrations of Kibris Endustri Bank and Kibris Kredi Bank whose financial situation got worse on Monday. The ``cabinet'' which convened under the leadership of Mustafa Akinci, decided to appoint an administrator to the two banks and to stop the deposit payments for six months. The payments of current accounts and commercial accounts will continue. A period of six months will be given to the banks to improve their financial situation. Kibris Endustri Bank belongs to Asil Nadir and the biggest shares of Kibris Kredi Bank belong to Salih Boyaci. Panel on ``Cyprus Prior to EU'' According to KIBRIS (8.5.00), advisor to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, Taner Etkin, speaking at a panel discussion organized by the Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association/s Istanbul Chapter on ``Cyprus Prior to EU'', claimed that the Greek-Greek Cypriot side was the intransigent side in the Cyprus problem. Repeating the known Turkish views on the Cyprus problem, Etkin said that they were not against the EU, and added: ``First a settlement and after the settlement one can discuss EU membership.'' He said it would pose a great danger for them to enter the EU without Turkey, unless Turkey is given special EU member rights. ``To enter an EU where Turkey is not present will be the end for us'', he said. Speaking at the same panel, former Turkish Foreign Minister Murat Karayalcin has said that ``it is not possible to think of Cyprus/ EU membership without the settlement of the Cyprus problem''. Karayalcin claimed that the Cyprus problem has entered the settlement course. He added that he believed that the Turkish side will score a major diplomatic success. He concluded by saying that instead of paying attention to the name of the settlement, whether it will be Federation or Confederation, one has to approach the problem from the functional point of view. Another former Turkish Foreign Minister, Ilter Turkmen, has said that ``Turkey/s membership to the EU in 2004 is a dream. It will be a great success if membership negotiations start in 2004. Turkey/s membership to the EU cannot take place earlier than eleven years from now.'' Turkmen went on and said: ``Nothing would have charged if we had rejected the Cyprus clause. That paragraph would still be there. The article mentioning the recourse to the International Court of Justice would still be there too. Had we rejected them, we would have lost the membership. If the Cyprus problem is not settled and Cyprus becomes EU member with the present state of affairs, then Turkey/s EU membership will become a dream. This is a serious issue that interests not only the TRNC but Turkey as well''. Turkish Literature Symposium According to KIBRIS (8.5.00) the 4th International Cyprus-Balkans-Eurasia Turkish Literature Symposium will be organized in Struga, FYROM. It will start tomorrow, 10 May, and will last five days. The Symposium is being organized by the Cyprus-Balkans - Eurasia Institution (KIBATEK). The Turkish Cypriot delegation who will take part in the symposium will leave the occupied area today. Gaulkin confident there will be an agreement in Cyprus According to KIBRIS (7.5.00), UNFICYP Acting Spokesman, Charles Gaulkin, has said that he believes that an agreement and a solution will be reached in Cyprus. In an interview to the paper/s correspondent Ozcan Ozcanhan, Gaulkin supported intercommunal contacts will help people from both sides to understand each other better. When asked to comment on the idea of ``peace-for-territory'', Gaulkin said: ``As you know, the debates that have been going on for years have created the conviction that there will be changes on the existing map. Various different attempts were made and, for example, Varosha is one of them. It seems that `peace-for-territory/ will be included within the comprehensive final settlement. And, naturally the territorial issue is one of the core issues that is being discussed at the negotiations.'' Cem believes Cyprus ``embargoes'' to be lifted within one year Illegal Bayrak radio 1 (15:30 hours, 8.5.00) reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem has claimed that the Cyprus cause is going well and that the confederation formula posited by Rauf Denktash is the focus of great interest at the moment. The minister was replying to reporters/ questions in connection with the third round of the Cyprus proximity talks. Asked if the ground is ready to hold direct talks, Cem said that this decision is up to Rauf Denktash and the ``government'' of the pseudostate. Cem asserted that the ground is ready to hold the third round of the proximity talks. He said: ``We are now explaining our opinions and needs in a more effective way and the TRNC officials are pleased about that. Their remarks are being taken into consideration differently now.'' Cem stressed that the confederation formula posited by Rauf Denktash is now gaining wider interest. He pointed out that at the moment, he is insistently raising the issue of the ``embargoes'' imposed on the ``TRNC''. He noted that his aim is to gain international interest for the ``embargoes'', and expressed the belief that the issue will be resolved within a year. Turkish academicians arrive in ``TRNC'' Turkish academicians from various universities arrived in the ``TRNC'' on May 6, in order to have contacts and give conferences. According to KIBRIS (9.5.00), the four academicians who arrived as the guest of so-called foreign affairs and defence ministry, are Dr. Rifat Ucarol from Dogus University, Dr. Mehmet Ali Kilicbay from Gazi University, Dr. Gul Inanc Barkay and Dr. Basak Ocakgez from the 9 Eylul University. Turkey returns exported wheat to pseudostate YENIDUZEN (8.5.00) reports that 1200 tons of wheat that had been exported from the occupied area to Turkey/s EXIM company in Adana South Turkey, has been returned to the occupied area, following tests carried out on wheat samples that proved the wheat was unsuitable for consumption. The paper says that Turkish officials banned entry of the wheat to Turkey. The so-called ministry of agriculture and forestry admitted the report. Turkish president urges donors for Cyprus boys KIBRIS (9.5.00) reports that Turkish President Suleyman Demirel on Monday urged Turks to help find suitable bone marrow donors for the two Cypriot children suffering from leukaemia. ``I call on the Turkish people to help those children. I think we can help save them'', Anatolia news agency quoted Demirel saying. Turkish, Greek Cypriot parties meet in buffer zone KIBRIS (9.5.00) reports the leaders and representatives of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot parties have held a meeting at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the buffer zone and discussed issues concerning the contacts between the two communities. The meeting sponsored by the Slovak Embassy lasted two hours. Attending the meeting from the Turkish Cypriot side were Serdar Denktash, leader of the main opposition Democrat Party; Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party; Gungor Gunkan from the Communal Liberation Party; and Alpay Durduran from the Patriotic Unity Movement. The officials from the Greek Cypriot side were: DISI (Democratic Rally) leader Nicos Anastasiades and Kaiti Clerides from the same party, Stathis Kittis from DIKO (Democratic Party), AKEL (Restorative Party of the Working People) Secretary General Dimitris Christofias, Social Democrats Movement Chairman Vassos Lyssarides, and Andreas Ladas from the United Democrats. At the end of the meeting which was hosted by the AKEL secretary general, the Slovak ambassador said that a positive atmosphere reigned during the talks. At the start of the meeting, Serdar Denktash proposed that a joint message of good wishes be sent to Dervis Eroglu and President Clerides who are both in hospital. Serdar Denktash/s proposal was accepted by all. The next meeting will be held on 6 June. The participants will discuss ways of bringing the two communities closer together. The meeting was not attended by the Turkish Cypriot National Unity Party, the National Revival Party, or the Nationalist Justice Party. Church sacrileged According to KIBRIS (8.5.00) an old church between the occupied villages of Ayios Andronikos and Ardana was the target of sacrilege . Unknown persons wrote on the walls of the church their ``feelings'' and ``thoughts''. Tourists, who visited the Karpasia area, have reacted to what they saw happened to the church. Hotel to be built in Rizokarpaso area KIBRIS (9.5.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot Hasan Balcioglu, who lives in London, said that he will build tourist installations on the coast between the occupied villages of Yialousa and Rizokarpaso. The 700 bed capacity hotel is going to be built on 35 donums of land and will be completed in three years. Turkish Cypriots attend UNFPA conference in Istanbul KIBRIS (9.5.00) reports that a conference on population health and production, organized by UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) and ECO (European Economic Cooperation), is being held in Istanbul. A delegation from the pseudostate, consisting of the ``director'' of the so- called statistics and research state planning bureau Feridun Kemal Feridun, Hatice Soyalan from the ``health and environment ministry'' and Husnu Duba from the so-called foreign affairs and defence ministry attends the conference. Syrian fishermen arrested According to KIBRIS (9.5.00) the occupation ``police'' in Karpasia arrested yesterday nine Syrian fishermen off the coast between the occupied villages of Komi Kepir and Patriki. The nine Syrians will appear today before the illegal Famagusta district court. Too many quarries operating in pseudostate According to KIBRIS (7.5.00) the number of quarries operating on the occupied Pentadactylos range is threatening the ecological balance. A report prepared by the ``Union of Mediterranean Winds'' says that for the occupied area/s needs four quarries are enough. Whereas there are 23 quarries currently operating in the occupied area. The report refers in detail to the destruction these quarries are causing to the environment, especially when they use large quantities of dynamite to blow up rocks. Trade deficit According to KIBRIS (9.5.00) the trade deficit of the pseudostate for the 1998 fiscal year was 99 trillion 359 billion 940 million and 275 thousand TL. KIBRIS reports that the export and import statistics for the year 1998 has been published by the so-called trade department of the ``ministry of finance and economy''. The report includes detailed analysis of the pseudostate/s trade relations with other countries. Cooperation ``protocol'' According to KIBRIS (6.5.00) the so-called cooperation protocol signed between Turkey/s Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the occupied area has been put into operation. The so-called protocol has been published in the ``official gazette''. US Jurist gives lecture YENIDUZEN (9.5.00) reports that the director of Midtown Civil Court, US Jurist Julius Lang, gave a lecture yesterday on ``the Application of Civil Rule Principles within a Criminal Justice System'', at the American Centre in the occupied Omorphita.
