[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash hopes President Clerides/s illness does not affect talksAnatolia Agency (7:47 hours, 4.5.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash wished speedy recovery for President Glafcos Clerides.Speaking to reporters, Denktash said: "I was told that Clerides has an inflammatory illness. I wish him a speedy recovery. I hope this won/t affect the talks". [02] CTP warns against Turkey-linked economic solutionsAccording to illegal Bayrak radio 1 (15:30 hours, 4.5.00) the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) has warned that measures to be implemented by the National Unity Party-Communal Liberation Party "coalition government" under the banner of reform could drag the people of the pseudostate into further destitution.In a written statement, CTP leader Mehmet Ali Talat said that all the sectors are experiencing the worse period of the past quarter century. Talat criticized the fact that the solutions are expected from Turkey. Talat declared: "Pinning our hopes only on recipes originating from Turkey, while our own potential is evident, is both wrong and open to serious dangers in the future". At this critical juncture, Talat called on Denktash and Ankara to act with more caution. Talat charged that the "coalition government" and Denktash are indifferent to the destitution of the people and the various sectors, adding that the people have lost their confidence in the "government" and practically in all its institutions. [03] Turkey/s Logoglu: two-state principle is an indispensable parameterAnatolia Agency (13:51 hours, 4.5.00) reports that Faruk Logoglu, the Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary, said on Thursday that the principle of "two states" on Cyprus is an indispensable parameter for the Turkish side. Logoglu responded to the questions on the latest situation in the Cyprus question and the third round of Cyprus proximity talks which were planned to begin on May 23, during his visit to Anatolia Agency (A.A.)Logoglu noted that the Turkish side will not take a backward step from the principle of "two states" and that this is an indispensable parameter. The aim of the proximity talks is laying the groundwork for the face-to-face meetings, Logoglu stated. Logoglu said that the two sides accepted to apply a new method in the third round of proximity talks but it is not clear yet what the change will be. He added that these parameters include proposals which are in line with the strategic basic interests and the "realities" on the island. [04] Eroglu hospitalized with heart problemTurkish Cypriot so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu has been hospitalized and is under observation at the Burhan Nalbantoglu Hospital in the occupied part of Nicosia for a heart ailment.Illegal BRT (5.5.00) reports that Eroglu was hospitalized on Friday, 5th May, following symptoms of severe chest pain and heartburn at 2:00 in the morning. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the internal medicine department at the Burhan Nalbantoglu Hospital in occupied Nicosia. Eroglu was diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome. The doctors reported that Eroglu/s health is good and the necessary measures have been adopted. Dr. Dervis Vural and his team, who arrived on a private plane from Ankara on Friday morning, performed an angiogram on the 62-year-old Eroglu. After the angiogram Eroglu was reported to be in good condition. Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who visited Eroglu in the hospital, made a statement after the visit, noting that he spoke to Eroglu and his condition is good. Following the reports on Eroglu/s illness, many visitors arrived at the hospital. So-called ministers, deputies, high-ranking military commanders, and other "officials" called on Eroglu. [05] East Mediterranean Regata to visit occupied portsAccording to KIBRIS (4.5.00) the 74 yachts participating in the EMYR 2000, XI. East Mediterranean Regata (yacht rally) will arrive in the occupied port of Kyrenia on 14th of May.The yacht rally started on 26 April from the Atankoy Marina in Istanbul and will end on 7 June at the Ashkelon port, in Israel. The occupation regime will give a cocktail party for the participants at the Kyrenia Castle where they will also be shown a promotion film of the pseudostate. 120 participants from 17 countries are taking part in the EMYR East Mediterranean Regata whose aim "is to establish bonds of friendship and learn about different cultures". The route of this year/s regata is Istanbul-Antalya-Larnaca-Kyrenia-Famagusta and ports of Israel and Lebanon.
