  • [A] NEWS ITEMS

    [01] Denktash officially declared /President/

Illegal Bayrak Radio (20.4.00) reports that the pseudosate/s ``High Election Council'' has declared Rauf Denktash ``president''. A statement issued by the ``High Election Council'' notes that all procedures concerning the second round of ``elections'' had been called off after National Unity Party leader Dervis Eroglu withdrew his candidacy. The statement further says that Denktash has been officially declared ``president''.

[02] Demirel congratulates Denktash, Turkey to continue support

Anatolia Agency (20/4/00) reports that Turkish President Suleyman Demirel sent on Thursday a congratulatory letter to Rauf Denktash on his re- election.

``I am sure that TRNC will have better days and maintain its place as an element of peace and stability in Eastern Mediterranean under the leadership of you. Turkish Republic will continue to extend support to Turkish Cypriot people regarding our national cause of Cyprus'' said Demirel in his letter to Denktash.

[03] Ecevit says Denktash 'guarantee of peace' in Cyprus

Anatolia Agency (13:38 hours, 20.4.00) reports that Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit said on Thursday that Rauf Denktash is the guarantee of peace and comfort on the island.

Ecevit sent a congratulatory message to Denktash inter alia saying:

``I believe that your successful contributions to the national case of Turkish Cypriots will continue in this new term.

I wish that the results of the elections will be beneficial for Turkish Cypriots''.

[04] Denktash calls on Eroglu, Ertugruloglu to resign

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (10:30 hours, 20/4/00) Rauf Denktash has called for the resignation of Dervis Eroglu. He charged that it is no longer possible to cooperate with the ``prime minister'' or with Tahsin Ertugruloglu, ``minister of foreign affairs and defense'', because of what was said and done during the ``election'' campaign. ``If somebody else from the National Unity Party (UBP) becomes prime minister'', Denktash said, ``the government may remain in power''.

After receiving the ``official'' notification of his ``presidency'', Denktash inter alia said that during the ``election'' campaign he observed that there are certain issues that need to be tackled and the economy comes first among these issues.

Asked to comment on his previous remarks that if elected in the first round, he would have more room to maneuver in the Cyprus talks, Denktash said that the fact that all his rivals withdrew from the race indicates that he is the best. He added that this message has been accepted by the entire world.

Denktash said that Eroglu withdrew on his own will. However, Denktash said, the attacks he launched on me until the last minute show that the lack of trust between the two posts is very deep. ``I think that in a normal democratic country the prime minister gives the president a chance by resigning. He should either say that he continues to trust me, that is was a democratic race, and what happened at the elections can be forgotten, or he should say that he does not trust me, and that another person from his party must become prime minister because the people cannot be served with the existing lack of trust between the two posts. That is our right. We must make this contact. I hope that his is also assessing the situation. I am not saying anything against the party. However, the tableau the honorable prime minister displayed during the entire campaign was that I am incapable of shouldering this mission, that I am dangerous for the country, and that I should be replaced. He said this by going into great detail. I did not want to follow everything that he said so that I could continue to trust him at least a little. If a prime minister who declares that he does not trust me in any way remains in power, that means that as was the case during the past five years, he will act as my friend to my face, and resort to all kinds of maneuvers to undermine me the minute I turn my back. The people do not deserve that. It two persons who are angry at each other occupy the two highest posts in the country, they cannot serve the people well.''

Denktash also said: ``The foreign minister insulted my greatly. He said in numerous occasions that I am like a nightmare for the country, that I should go, that my presidency is dangerous, that it is dangerous for the cause. Everybody saw him as a fanatic Eroglu follower during the campaign. He was very active and militant. Therefore, he must also think twice. He must think to what extent it is right and beneficial for the country if I work together with a foreign minister who declared that he does not trust me regarding the national cause, that he does not trust me in the Cyprus talks.'' Denktash denied the newspaper reports that Eroglu withdrew from the race after Ecevit and Demirel telephoned from Turkey. Denktash pointed out that after he decided to withdraw from the race, Eroglu called Demirel and Ecevit and infromed them of his decision.

Asked to comment on the reports that after Eroglu withdrew, the pseudostate received Turkish aid worth $100 million, Denktash stressed that the loan has nothing to do with Eroglu/s withdrawal and that it was a normal loan.

[05] Eroglu says no intention of resigning

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (15:30 hours 20.4.00), so called prime minister Dervis Eroglu has stressed that the National Unity Party -Communal Liberation Party (TKP) ``coalition government'' will continue to perform its duties. Eroglu added that he will resign from the office of ``prime minister'' only if the party council removes him from party leader. Explaining that it was the his party/s votes that enabled him to assume the position of ``prime minister'', Eroglu stressed that, for this reason, he has no intention of abiding by others/ call to resign. Eroglu added: ``Our objective was to receive enough votes for the second round of elections. There were, however, some decisions that had to be made for the interests of the country. These decisions have been made. It is unnecessary to engage in any other kind of interpretations. Undoubtedly, time may bring certain things to light. I do not bear any hard feelings toward anybody, however. For this reason, anybody who bears hard feelings against me should better get rid of them.''

[06] Eroglu rules out threats, pressure in withdrawal

Anatolia Ageny (18:26 hours, 19/4/00) reports that so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu has said that ``there were no threats or pressure'' regarding his withdrawal from the ``presidential race''.

In a statement, Eroglu pointed out that the decision was reached unanimously at the National Unity Party (UBP) Party Council and stressed that ``he does not want to comment further on the issue.'' He pointed out that the Party Council took into consideration the stands displayed and moves made during the propaganda period and decided to withdraw from the second round of the ``presidential elections''. He added: ``There was no pressure.''

[07] Denktash : The aim of Turkish Cypriots is the EU

Anatolia Agency (17:01 hours, 19.4.00) reports that Rauf Denktash has said he will be going to New York on 23 May for the third round of the Cyprus proximity talks, adding: ``We will tackle the difficulties together. Nobody should have any doubts that we will make best use of the opportunities that may come our way.''

Denktash stressed that the aim of the Turkish Cypriots is the EU, and that they will reach this aim without conceding from their rights, and with the help of the experts and the support of Turkey.

Rauf Denktash disclosed that Dervis Eroglu called Turkish President Demirel and Prime Minister Ecevit to inform them of this decision to withdraw from the race, and that the Turkish President and Prime Minister told him ``it is your decision.'' Denktash said that he too talked to President Demirel and Prime Minister Ecevit on the telephone.

Denktash said that the ``swearing in'' ceremony will he held at around the time his current term ends. Denktash term ends on 22 April.
