[01] Greek Cypriot unionists attend Turkish Labour Congress

The Greek Cypriot representatives were: Andreas Papapolyviou, Glafcos Hadjpetrou and Kyriakos Andreou from PASYDY; Erotokritos Koumides and Despo Isaia from SEK; Sotiris Fellas, Michalis Papanicolaou and Andreas Paphitis from PEO.

Addressing the congress, Glafcos Hadjipetrou said that this meeting is a sign that Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot unionists are in solidarity. He said that a struggle has been waged to further advance the common interests of the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots and that the union activities are the best example. He said that the Greek Cypriots are moved and encouraged by the campaign launched by the Turkish Cypriots to help save a leukaemia-stricken Greek Cypriot. He stressed that solidarity and brotherhood always strengthen the struggle.

The Greek Cypriot unionists then presented Ali Seylani, leader of the Turkish Cypriot Civil Servants Union, with various gifts.

Speaking at the congress the Chairman of the KTAMS Ali Seylani, strongly criticized the so-called NUP-CLP ``coalition government'' for not making necessary ``legal arrangements'' for civil servants to be active in the political life of the Turkish Cypriots.

Mr. Seylani has reiterated KTAMS/s support for a bizonal bicommunal federal solution. He implied, without giving names, that KTAMS will not support Denktash during the forthcoming so-called ``Presidential election'' because of Denktash/s stance regarding a federal settlement.

The Republican Turkish Party leader Mehmet Ali Talat, Patriotic Union Movement General Secretary Izzet Izcan, and KESK General-Secretary Sevil Erol addressed the congress giving peace and cooperation messages.

[02] Addition to so-called economic protocol with Turkey approved

The so-called Minister of Transportation and Public Works of the pseudostate Salih Miroglu, who spoke to reporters at the end of the convention, said that the said ``protocol'' had been signed on 11 February 2000 by State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel on behalf of Turkey and Mehmet Bayram on behalf of the pseudostate.

Miroglu said that the appendix included a number of stipulations and accords aimed at stabilizing the pseudostate/s economy.

According to the stipulations of the appendix, the Turkish Cypriots will fulfill all responsibilities entrusted by the so-called Economic Cooperation Protocol, dated 3 January 1997, and Turkey will continue to provide financial support and technical aid to the pseudostate.

The Turkish government is also to provide credits worth the amount reserved for appropriations from the Budget of the 2000 Fiscal Year, in addition to resources worth 250 million US dollars.

[03] Increase of voters in ``elections'' in occupied areas

In these ``elections'' eight candidates will run out of which four are independent.

After the Turkish invasion in Cyprus in 1974, the Turkish Cypriots voted for their leader in 1976, in 1981, in 1983, in 1985, in 1990 and in 1995.

This time, 126,591 voters will go to the ballot boxes. There is an increase of 13,191 voters since the last ``elections'' of 1995.

[04] It is Denktash/s turn to leave the political scene

According to SABAH, after the vote at Turkey/s Grand National Assembly, rejecting the amendment to the law which would have given the opportunity to Turkish President Suleyman Demirel to be re-elected for another five year term, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has lost a point and now it is his turn to leave the political scene.
