[01] US will raise human rights problem

An article in Istanbul HURRIYET (7.8.99) reviews the tentative programme of Ecevit´s visit to the USA.

Commenting on the possible contents of the meeting between Clinton and Ecevit the paper says that it is common knowledge that the US will put weight on the human rights problem and democratization in Turkey. It is added that there have been signs that the United States will ask for certain concessions for a solution in Cyprus and urge Ankara to take ``concrete'' steps to improve human rights and broaden democracy in Turkey.

Considering the serious difference of views between the two countries particularly on the Cyprus problem, many experts have described the talks to be held in the United States as ``a difficult tango in Washington'', the paper adds.

    [02] Bosnia-Herzegovina Education Minister

Following a meeting (6.8.99) with Fehruddin Rizanbegovic, the Bosnian Minister of National Education and Culture who is currently visiting the ``TRNC'', Denktash said:

``The Turkish side does not have any objections to the visit of our guests to the Greek Cypriot side. We don´t want to marry the Greek Cypriot side, but only make an agreement with them.(…) Confederation is their lalst remedy, Greek Cypriots should evaluate that well.''

As reported by Ankara Anatolia (6.8.99) Rizanbegovic praised Denktash for his contribution to the success of education in the ``TRNC''.

Responding to a question, Denktash said that the appointment of Tom Weston as US Special Representative to Cyprus, to replace Holbrooke will not make a change in respect of the Cyprus question. Denktash stressed that Weston has to change his view that ``there is only one government in Cyprus'', as Turkish Cypriots can never accept that.

    [03] Talat criticizes `coalition government´

According to YENIDUZEN (7.8.99) the Republican Turkish Party, (RTP) leader Mehmet Ali Talat strongly criticized the so-called NUP-CLP-coalition government and accused if of turning the occupied area into a place where there is a fire.

According to KIBRIS (9.8.99) Turkey´s state minister responsible for ``Monopolies'' declared that if Turkey imports from the occupied area ``Raki- an alcoholic beverage particular to Turkey'', the state monopolies in Turkey will incur a loss amounting to 2 trillion TL. He said that there were two reasons why Turkey was reluctant to implement the relevant part of the so-called protocol signed between Turkey and the occupied area concerning export of ``TRNC'' raki to Turkey. One was economic and the second reason was related to brand name ``Raki''. He expressed the fear that the Raki produced in the occupied area might tarnish the raki´s image. Moreover, using this favour accorded to the occupied area as pretext, some European Countries citing the Customs Union agreement signed between Turkey and the EU may request that beverages similar to Raki produced in these countries be imported to Turkey. [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

    [14] Turkey´s activities in the ``TRNC'' criticized

Sener Levent continues to criticize in his column ``Angle'' in AVRUPA (7.8.99) Turkey´s activities in the occupied area, he said:

(Paragraph omitted) ``We are Cypriots. We are Turkish Cypriots…Not Turks from Turkey. Turks from Turkey at this moment have acquired more rights in the world than we have.

On top of that, what they have in our country, we do not have in their country. Our number as Turkish Cypriots in the world is known. We are hardly a million. However, whatever our number, we have to continue our existence.

Small peoples in the world become attached closely so that they are not assimilated.

On the contrary here we are divided and fragmented. We are unable stand up united against those who usurped our rights. Who usurped our rights? First the Greek Cypirots! And then our ``Saviours''.

After 1974 they have taken the administration in north Cyprus in their own hands. Wherever they wanted to establish their bases they did so, and they have acquired whatever land they wanted to.

And with sham-elections they imposed on us those they preferred. They take the decisions here and the struggle goes on amongst us. Who should we get angry with? Should we get angry with Ankara taking the decisions? Or should we get angry with our ``government'' that implements the decisions taken in Ankara.

What will happen if our government refuses to apply them, it will be removed from the office and another will be installed.
