[01] Denktash comments on economic integration with Turkey

According to illegal Bayrak radio (10.30 hours, 20.5.99) the 2d ``Turkey- TRNC Comparative Judicial Symposium'' has started with the opening addresses at the ``East Mediterranean University''.

In his address at the symposium, Rauf Denktash claimed that the Cyprus Government is trying to secure integration with Greece by trying to enter the EU. Alleging that the Cyprus Government seeks to eliminate Turkey´s right as guarantor state through the EU membership and have the refugees return, Denktash said: ``The Greek Cypriot Administration is justifying for this goal on claims of human rights. We, in turn, will respond to the Greek Cypriots by securing economic integration with Turkey''. Noting that there are certain legal differences to be settled before the ``protocol'' to this end can be implemented, Denktash added: ``There are some legal differences between the countries. These problematic points should be determined as soon as possible and resolved so that our path to integration with Turkey can be opened.'' Noting that he seeks for the legal issues to be resolved in line with the harmonization laws in Turkey, Denktash said: ``We should abide by these harmonization laws and take steps accordingly. It is our duty not to allow the Greek Cypriots to have the upper hand on this issue''.

[02] Ertugruloglu insists on ``TRNC reality''

KIBRIS (21.5.99) reports that the so-called foreign and defence minister of the pseudostate Tahsin Ertugruloglu, speaking to the visiting Rumanian journalists headed by Carol Roman, repeated the known Turkish views claiming that ``there is no single Cyprus''.

He said that if an agreement is to be reached in Cyprus then the ``TRNC reality should be accepted''.

He concluded by saying: ``The Cyprus problem will be solved the day the Rumanian Airlines starts direct flights toTymbou''.

[04] Turkish Cypriots to attend seminar on Cyprus in Baku

ORTAM (20.5.99) reports that a three man delegation from the occupied area will attend a seminar to be organized by the Ali Diplomacy College of Baku, Azerbaidjan.

The seminar called ``Cyprus: History and Contemporarism'' will be held between 21-25 May in Baku.

The Chairman of the so-called East Mediterranean University Research Centre Ismail Bozkurt, and researchers and advisors to Denktash Ahmet Gazioglu and Sabahattin Ismail will take part in the seminar.

Speakers from other Turkic states will take part in the seminar. (MY)

[05] Yildirim Akbulut new TGNA speaker

According to ORTAM (21.9.99), Yildirim Akbulut (Motherland Party - Ankara deputy) has been elected speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA).

Akbulut was elected at the fourth and last round of the election.

He received 332 votes out of 541 and his Nationalist Action Party rival Sadi Somuncuoglu received 191 votes. Seven votes were considered invalid and 11 deputies casted white votes.

It is the third time that Akbulut is elected to this post. (MY)

[06] AVRUPA on destruction of cultural heritage

AVRUPA (20.5.99) in an article under the title ``How should we promote ourselves'' refers to the various Turkish Cypriot press reports according to which churches, cemeteries and places of worship in the occupied area are being sacrileged by the Turkish Cypriots.

The article scorns this kind of actions and says that ``Had the Greek Cypriots done the same thing to our Mosques we would have been complaining immediately that the Greek Cypriots are trying to erase Turkish existence on the island''.

The article urges the ``authorities'' to take the necessary measures to protect these places so that an end will be put to the fact that since 1974 the Turks are being promoted as vandals to the world.
