[01] DENKTASH URGES SEPARATION IN KOSOVO, AS IN CYPRUS

Anatolia Agency (2153 hours, 31/3/99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash went to Alanya by ferry Wednesday evening. He was met at the post by Governor Cengiz Gokce, Mayor Mustafa Bekar, Security Director Ayhan Pamuk, and other officials.

Replying to reporters' questions on the ferry, Denktash claimed: "It is obvious that with its spirit, faith, and enmity, Greece cannot solve the Cyprus problem or develop its relations with Turkey."

On the Kosovo problem, Denktash alleged: "It is a shame for humanity. Instead of trying to separate those two communities that have had a lot of blood flow between them, the world is constantly trying to unite them. It will be an artificial unity. Such a unity would explode in three years time, just as in Cyprus. Then who is going to save those that are numerically in the minority? They would all be eliminated. Therefore the solution is separation. The solution is to grant the Kosovars their rights. If there is going to be peace in the future, it must be between two equal sides. Furthermore, NATO should have displayed its power and determination earlier. I do not think that the current air operation will achieve anything. A land operation is essential".

Denktash returned to the occupied area on the same ferry.

[02] CANCER INCIDENTS ON THE RISE

KIBRIS (2.4.99) reports under banner headlines that cancer incidents in the occupied area have increased by 48% in the last ten years.

The report says that each year an average of 150 people develop cancer and 75 people die from cancer in the occupied area.

The report further adds that in 1988 124 people developed cancer and in 1998 this number rose to 183, which shows an increase of 48%.

KIBRIS reports that between 1987-1998 there were 313 breast, 310 skin, 250 stomach and 249 luny cancer cases.
