[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] TURKEY : DSP URGED TO ESTABLISH COALITION WITH FPAccording to Hurriyet (17.3.99) in an exclusive statement to the paper, Virtue Party (FP) leader Recai Kutan made an interesting proposal to Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. He said: "We want to establish a coalition with the Democratic Left Party (DSP) after the elections. I believe that a coalition between the FP and the DSP will be in Turkey's interest. A tripartite coalition will be unnecessary. Such a development will create an opportunity for the two parties, whose global views are different, to work together. Turkey must get used to the idea. A rigid line cannot be drawn between the left and right wings in Turkey anymore. I believe we have a good chance to surmount the problem."Kutan said that compared with the other political parties, the FP can work with the DSP more comfortably. He asserted: "Another alternative is as follows: A tripartite coalition can be established between the FP, the Motherland Party (ANAP), and the True Path Party (DYP), depending on the votes they will secure. The difficulty in that will be to have the two parties work together. That will be a problem. So, the government can be established by the DSP and FP or the DSP, ANAP, and DYP. Regarding the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Action Party, I cannot predict their situation. It is believed that their deputies will be very few. We can make a coalition with all of them. Nevertheless, we prefer a two-party coalition. It can work in harmony." Explaining why the FP prefers to establish a coalition with the DSP, Kutan said: "The sectors which support the two parties are very similar. In other words, the DSP's target is the suburbs. Well, the FP has also selected the suburbs as its target. The two parties are interested in the rural areas. Furthermore, the two parties have emerged as honest political organizations. I do not want to blame any political party, but the citizens believe that the FP and the DSP are honest and that they have not been involved in suspicious activities. So, we prefer the DSP." Kutan recalled the cooperation between the CHP and the defunct National Salvation Party when they established a coalition in 1974 and said that the experience they have may facilitate harmony between the DSP and the FP if they agree to work together. He asserted: "The former CHP-MSP Coalition was not one which failed to work with a spirit of reconciliation. The coalition successfully functioned at the beginning. Our colleagues informed us that the problems were discussed between the two sides and a point was reached in the end. In fact, some of our CHP colleagues supported our proposals, not those that were made by Bulent Ecevit. In other words, the coalition's work was satisfactory. However, the Cyprus problem significantly disrupted that state of affairs later." [02] DENKTASH : "TURKEY IS THE OWNER OF CYPRUS"According to KIBRIS (18.3.99) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in a conference at Turkey's War Academies in Istanbul, has declared that: "Cyprus is Turkey's island and we in Cyprus defend Turkey's cause".Denktash said that the "protocol" signed with Turkish President Suleyman Demirel in January 1997 and the subsequent "protocols" that were signed stress the existence of the "TRNC". Denktash went on and repeated his known views and said that: "Agreement with the Greek Cypriots passes through recognition of the TRNC. This is the basis for peace. Let the unification come later on. As time passes by, the walls get reduced, borders removed. Cyprus is Turkey's island. We in Cyprus defend Turkey's cause. We as Turkish Cypriots never owned Cyprus ..... Turkey is the owner of Cyprus. The cause is Turkey's cause. We are people whose freedom is protected within this cause and for this reason we are happy". Speaking at another ceremony where the Gebze Higher Technology Institute presented him with an honorary Doctorate degree, Denktash said "Cyprus is a vital issue for motherland Turkey". Denktash praised the last two Turkish governments for their stance regarding the Cyprus problem. He said that these two governments put forward clear and concrete vision which made them happy.
