[01] Turkey expects Greece to ``sever ties with PKK'', sees new problems in solving the Cyprus problem

According to Anatolia Agency (12:55 hours, 24.2.99), the Turkish Foreign Ministry stressed that there cannot be solidarity with countries that welcome terrorism, and declared that Turkey expects Greece to openly condemn the PKK and sever its relations with this organization.

In his weekly news conference, Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Sermet Atacanli replied to questions concerning the relations between the PKK and Greece.

Atacanli claimed that the Greek attitude allegedly supportive of terrorism dates back to the pre-PKK (Workers Party of Kurdistan) period and incorporates ``Armenian terrorism'' as well.

Atacanli listed Turkey´s expectations from Greece as follows: ``We believe that Greece should introduce radical changes in its policies. We expect Greece to clearly and unequivocally condemn the terrorist organization, sever its ties with the terrorist organization and the gang institutions affiliated with this organization, and disallow the activities of the terrorist organization.''

Recalling that various officials in Greece base their ties with the PKK on humanitarian reasons, Atacanli said that such excuses are unacceptable arguments.

Atacanli also claimed that the recent incidents demonstrated the PKK´s links with the Cyprus Government. He said: ``This common stand adopted by Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration vis-a-vis Turkey will create certain new problems regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem''.

Asked to comment on reports that a suit will be filed with the European Human Rights Court in connection with Greece´s alleged ties with the PKK, Atacanli responded: ``Turkey is resolved to take every step necessary to expose Greece´s attitude regarding terrorism in the international arena and to deter it from this stand''.

Asked to comment on the latest US statement on the subject, Atacanli said that Turkey issued an appeal for cooperation by sharing the evidence it holds on the subject of terrorism with every allied and friendly country, and the contacts with the United States are continuing within this context.

[02] Denktash warns demonstrators not to march to occupied area

According to Anatolia Agency (16:20 hours, 24.2.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Wednesday, ``if the supporters of the terrorist organization, who held demonstration on the Greek-Cypriot side, want to march on the Turkish side, just let them try to do it.''

Speaking to reporters, Denktash said that the side which wants peace on Cyprus should be the friend of Turkey at first.

``Let´s suppose that we made peace with the Greek-Cypriots. Those demonstrators will attack us and the Greek-Cypriot police will only watch. The side, which wants peace on Cyprus, should be the friend of Turkey at first. They are proving that they are not a friend of Turkey. Thus we will take the necessary measures'', Denktash said.

[03] Radioactive waste to be transferred to Turkey

According to Anatolia Agency (10:42 hours, 23.2.99) the isotopes which were allegedly left by the international Cyprus Mining Company (CMC) 25 years ago in occupied Lefka will be transferred to the Istanbul Cekmece Nuclear Research Center.

Dr. Gulsen Bozkurt, so-called health and environment minister, told the A.A. that they were informed about a possible radiation leak in Lefka by a former CMC employee.

``We sent a team to the area to take measurements. The researchers detected a leak with a radius of 1 to 2 meters. The radiation is very weak and does not constitute a big threat. However, we still banned the entrance to the mine site and put warning signs. We were able to locate 3 of the 8 isotopes so far'', Bozkurt explained.

A group of experts from the Turkish Atomic Energy Foundation (TAEK) came to the island to investigate the site and write a report.

    [04] Denktash meets US Ambassador

YENI Demokrat (25.2.99) reports that Rauf Denktash had a meeting yesterday with the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Kenneth Brill.

The meeting took place at Brill´s residence in the occupied area over lunch.

There was no statement after the meeting. (MY)

[05] Denktash claims he quoted late Archbishop Makarios in remarks about ``Cypriotism''

According to KIBRIS (25.2.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, following the uproar he caused within the Turkish Cypriot community with his statements about ``Cypriotism'', with a view to quelling the protests has claimed that it was late President Makarios who said that there was no such people called ``Cypriot''. ``I have quoted him in order to stress that there is no such people called Cypriot. Journalists who reported the news did not mention this'', Denktash claimed. (MY)

[06] Eroglu to give lecture in Turkey

According to KIBRIS (25.2.99), the so- called prime minister of the pseudostate, Dervish Eroglu, left the occupied area for Kocaeli, Western Turkey, via Istanbul, as the guest of the Association of Kocaeli Industrialists and Businessmen.

Tonight Eroglu will give a lecture on Cyprus, organized by the Association.

He will return to the occupied area on Saturday. (MY)
