[01] 27.9% of territory to the Turks according to US plan

AVRUPA (9.2.99) reports under the banner headlines ``27.9% of territory is proposed to us'' and claims it has acquired the main points of the US plan prepared for Cyprus.

The full text of AVRUPA´s report is as follows:

``Your newspaper AVRUPA has acquired the main points of the new plan prepared by the USA for Cyprus.

In the new plan, which is kept secret and special care is being taken not to leak it to anybody, the confederal system is considered as the basis.

According to the information we have acquired, in the USA plan 27.9% of territory is envisaged for the Turkish side.

Meanwhile, both sides will have cantons.

Louroudjina, Vadili and Sinda will be in the Greek Cypriot area but they will be cantons under Turkish Administration. In turn Rizokarpasso and Ayia Triada in the Karpass peninsula will be in the Turkish side but under Greek Cypriot Administration .

    VAROSHA (subtitle)

Again according to the new plan, Varosha which is closed to settlement since 1974 will be left to the Greek Cypriots.

It is not known whether the Greek Cypriots have accepted the USA plan.

However, information leaked from reliable sources, says the Turkish side looks into this plan `warmly´.

It is considered that the latest visit to Cyprus of Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem is related to this plan''. (MY)

[02] Talat meets US State Department official

According to KIBRIS (9.2.99) Republican Turkish Party (RTP) leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, had a meeting yesterday with the US State Department Turkish Desk official Taylor Rugglers, who is on a fact-finding visit to Cyprus.

Rugglers said that in order to get first hand information his visit includes Greece, Turkey and both sides of Cyprus. ``I am here to learn'' said Rugglers.

In a statement to the so-called Turkish Agency Cyprus (TAK), Talat said that lately there is an impasse in the Cyprus problem. ``The problem has to be taken out of this impasse and should enter a course again, and within this course to safeguard the Turkish Cypriots people´s interests'', Talat said.

Talat further said that the USA is awaiting the results of the April elections in Turkey in order to resume a more active initiative in Cyprus.

Talat warned, however, that before this initiative gains momentum, ``it is necessary to know well the views of all sides.'' (MY)

[03] Akinci defends ``right to a separate state''

According to ORTAM (9.2.99) the so-called state minister and deputy prime minister of the pseudostate, Mustafa Akinci, has said that ``Cyprus´ national cause is everybody´s cause'' and that ``a strong and developing TRNC is not an obstacle to peace but a sound foundation stone.''

Akinci claimed that ``no one has the right to intervene in the Turkish Cypriot people´s right to a separate state acquired on 21 December 1963''. He said that in case of a possible settlement it is a must to maintain Turkey´s effective and active guarantorship.

Akinci made this statement during a meeting with the executive committee members of the Turkish Cypriot Fighters Association headed by chairman Halil Pasa. (MY)

[04] YENIDUZEN denounces destruction of cultural heritage in the occupied area

YENI DUZEN (9.2.99) publishes two pictures, one of a totally destroyed Greek Cypriot cemetery and the other of a Greek Cypriot church in a dilapidated state in the occupied area.

The paper does not give either the names nor the places of the cemetery and the church. It only makes the following comment: ``In 1974 the Greek Cypriots left this land. Cyprus was divided into two. The Greek Cypriots started to live in the south and the Turkish Cypriots in the north. The photographs we are publishing today on the front page make hair stand on end. There is no need to give the name of the Greek Cypriot church or the cemetery. They are somewhere in the TRNC…What is our problem as a community in attacking other people´s freedom of thought and religion? What do these people think, from the socio-psychological point of view, when they break tombs, destroy graves, allow churches to become dilapidated? Indifference has grabbed us… And most important of all, what is the Department of Antiquities doing, which is responsible for maintaining these places? What is the government doing who claims `we will protect cultural heritage´ ? What is our people doing?'' (MY)

[05] Turkey - ``TRNC'' symposium on legal relations

According to KIBRIS (9.2.99) there will be a symposium in Ankara between 11-12 February on ``Legal relations between the Republic of Turkey and the TRNC''.

It is jointly organized by the Turkish Justice Ministry and the Turkish Cypriot Development Platform.

There will be four different sessions at the two-day symposium.

Turkey´s State Minister responsible for Cyprus Affairs, Sukru Gurel, Justice Minister Selcuk Oztek, Turkish Foreign Ministry Under-secretary Ambassador Korkmaz Haktanir, Turkish Deputy and Denktash´s advisor Prof. Mumtaz Soysal will attend the symposium.

From the occupied area, so-called supreme court president Salih Dahyioglu, so-called attorney general Akin Sait, so-called ombudsman Nail Atalay, so- called legal advisor to the ``Foreign Ministry'' Zaim Necatigil, ``Supreme Court'' judges Taner Erginer and Nevvar Nolan will attend.

KIBRIS says that it is possible that Turkish President Suleyman Demirel and Prime Minister Ecevit might attend the symposium and deliver separate speeches. (MY)

[06] Visiting Azeris express ``happiness'' at 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation

According to BIRLIK (9.2.99) Azeri University deans and scientists, who arrived in the occupied area on 5 February, continue their contacts.

The group yesterday had separate meetings with so-called education minister Mehmet Altinay, so-called assembly speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu, and so- called foreign and defence minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu.

Speaking to the Azeri academicians Altinay expressed the hope that these contacts will lead to a closer cooperation and that more Azeri students will arrive in the occupied area to pursue higher reduction, something that will in turn help promote the occupied area.

On his part, so-called assembly speaker Hasipoglu said he wanted closer relations between the two sides.

The so-called foreign minister Ertugruloglu repeated the known Turkish position on the Cyprus problem and demanded recognition.

Speaking on behalf of the visiting group, Prof. Gazanferoglu expressed happiness in establishing contact with the occupied area, adding that they felt great happiness when in 1974 the Turkish invasion and occupation ``were successfully carried out.'' (MY)
