[01] Denktash `does not take seriously´ Cordovez constitution for Cyprus

According to illegal Bayrak radio (16:30 hours 2.2.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said that he does not take seriously ther reports that Diego Cordovez, the UN Secretary General´s special aide for Cyprus, is drawing up a constitution for Cyprus. Denktash said that ``the Turkish Cypriots are sick and tired of Byzantine intrigues.'' He said ``the Greek Cypriot Administration is the administration of only the Greek Cypriots, and that it is the state in south Cyprus''. He added that the Turkish Cypriots are willing to discuss anything with people who accept this fact.

In a statement he issued, Denktash said that the Cyprus problem is not a constitutional one. He asserted that Turkey´s guarantee is crucial.

Dentkash alleged that ``so long as one of the sides claims to be the legitimate Cyprus government and so long as it continues to be treated as such in the world, the problem cannot be resolved.'' He claimed that by applying to the EU, the Greek Cypriot side eliminated equality and the accepted principles. He claimed that the Turkish Cypriots said no to this game and by proposing a confederation, proved that they intend to build bridges between the two sides.

Denktash stated that those who want Cyprus to be united must assess these realities well. Only after ``the two equal states'' accept these realities, he said, their representatives and jurists will draw up a constitution. ``We told Mr. Cordovez that in Glion, both Clerides and I. We said that the constitution is our business'', Denktash added.

Moreover, KIBRIS (3.2.99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash after visiting so-called assembly speaker, Ertugrul Hasipoglu, told the reporters that ``the Greek Cypriots do not intend to reach a settlement''. When asked to comment on his earlier statement about holding a referendum Denktash said: ``I did not say I will hold a referendum. I said when need be I will call a referendum''. He said that he did not discuss this issue with the so-called government.

Denktash strongly criticized the 1983 Security Council resolution which stipulates that there is only one illegal govenrment in Cyprus. He demanded from the USA and Britain to ``correct this mistake'' and render that decision null and void. (MY)

[02] Tatar denies allegations about Missing Persons Committee

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (16:30 hours, 2.2.99) Rustem Tatar, the Turkish Cypriot member of the Autonomous Missing Persons Committee, has denied the Greek Cypriot allegations about the committee. He denied a report which appeared in the FILELEFTHEROS on 28 January that the Turkish Cypriot side intends to disband the Investigation Committee.

In a statement to illegal Bayrak Radio and Television on 26 January, Tatar had said: ``After all the investigations are made, the Missing Persons Committee must reach a decision about the fate of the missing persons. This decision must be either that the person is dead or that he is alive. Finding the body should not be a condition for concluding that a person is dead.''

Tatar said that the special agreement signed on 31 July 1997 has no direct links with the Autonomous Missing Persons Committee. He said: ``That agreement can be placed on the agenda, once the authorities can determine the identities and burial places of those unfortunate Greek Cypriots who were killed by other Greek Cypriots during the Sampson coup, who were secretly buried without an identity check, and whose families were not notified''.

[03] Eroglu: ``Confederation not an obstacle''

According to BIRLIK (3.2.99) the so-called prime minister of the pseudostate, Dervish Eroglu, has declared that the so-called National Unity Party - Communal Liberation Party coalition government´s programme is not an obstacle in discussing confederation in the Cyprus problem.

Eroglu said that confederation is based on the ``two state'' principle and that on this issue the so-called government is carrying out detailed work and soon a more comprehensive announcement will be made.

When asked to comment on Denktash´s criticism that confederation is not inlcuded in the so-called government programme Eroglu said: ``In our government programme there is no article that says `confederation cannot be discussed´ . Confederation is based on the two state principle, and we are defending that position. On this issue we are carrying out a detailed work. Soon we will make a comprehensive statement'', Eroglu concluded. (MY)

[04] Greek Cypriot continues to be illegally held by occupation troops

KIBRIS (3.2.99) reports that George Ioannou (47), who was illegally arrested by the occupation troops on 27 January in the buffer zone near Nicosia, was ordered to stay in ``police'' custody for eight more days until the completion of the investigation. (MY)

    [05] Illegal immigirants arrested

KIBRIS (3.2.99) reports that 10 illegal immigrants were arrested in the occupied Koma tou Yialou village in the occupied Karpass peninsula last night.

KIBRIS adds that at around 20 hours last night an unknown boat dumped the eight Iraqi and two Somali citizens off the beach near the Koma tou Yialou village.

The paper says that six of them are women.

The illegal immigrants were originally heading for Limassol but for unknown reasons they were left on the shores of Karpass peninsula.

The illegal immigrants were arrested after a tip off to the ``police''. (MY)
