[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Eroglu replies to Denktash criticism of policy on Cyprus issueAccording to illegal BRTK (11:00 hours, 12.1.99) the UBP-TKP (National Unity Party-Communal Liberation Party) ``coalition government'' received a vote of confidence from the pseudo-assembly with 31 votes.UBPīs 24 ``deputies'' and TKPīs seven ``deputies'' cast a yes vote, whereas DPīs (Democratic Party) 12 and CTPīs (Republican Peopleīs Party six ``deputies'' cast a no vote. DP ``deputy'' Ahmet Kasif was on leave and did not participate in the voting. In his speech after the vote of confidence, Dervis Eroglu inter alia said: ``In noting that the government program has been subjected to an unprecedented criticism, I do not want to imply that I am against the criticism. Of course, the government programs are read out in the Assembly with the understanding that they would be subjected to criticism. I sincerely thank all those who criticized this government program to shed light on our path. We believe that our government would benefit from this criticism. I want to reiterate that we welcome any criticism made with good intentions. The TRNC coalition govenrmentīs objective is to serve the people; improve the welfare of the TRNC people; bestow to the future generations a climate of peace, security, and well being; and strengthen the TRNC statehood. Let no one doubt that we would discharge in the best manner possible all the tasks befalling our government for the strengthening of the TRNC. In particular, the geographical and political situation created by the happy Peace Operation of 1974 would be taken as a reference point. Let no one doubt that we would discharge in the best manner possible the task befalling us for getting international recognition for the existing realities in Cyprus. Especially, the assertions that the government program is not clear on the Cyprus problem saddens us, because the government program has quite overtly and clearly set out the governmentīs view on the Cyprus problem, and there is nothing obscure about it. The TRNC statehood would be protected, and all the task befalling us to strengthen and preserve the TRNC would be discharged. And, the government will work in this direction in cooperation with motherland Turkey. It has been stated openly and clearly in the program that we would cooperate with motherland Turkey specially where it concerns matters pertaining to the TRNC and our national cause. No one should doubt that this government would act along these lines and develop and deepen the cooperation with Turkey in every field.'' [02] Denktash denies ``Land for recognition'' reportsAnatolia Agency (17:13 hours , 12.11.99) reports that Rauf Denktash said on Tuesday that the news published in the Greek-Cypriot newspapers regarding the ``land for recognition'' was totally imaginary and was of no interest to the Turkish side.Speaking to reporters after meeting with Kenneth Brill, the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Denktash said that the only peaceful formula for negotiating with the Greek-Cypriot side was the confederation which was decided together with Turkey. Denktash claimed that the aim of the confederation formula was to set up cooperation bridges between ``two states'' and turn Cyprus into a bridge of peace between Turkey and Greece. Pointing out that the issue of the exchange of property might be solved by a joint commission to be established by the two sides, Denktash said, ``I am inviting the Greek-Cypriots to discuss a formula which can give the most realistic and necessary response to two sides by establishing a joint commission regarding the exchange of property. I had earlier proposed this formula. Letīs set up a commission. We can enable our peoples to exchange property.'' Denktash said the exchange of property and land was a legal and political issue and efforts should be launched to make the European Court of Human Rights accept this issue, otherwise the continuing talks on Cyprus would lose their meaning. Responding to a question, Denktash said a US-style federation won`t work on Cyprus and the conditions on the island were different from those in the US. The US Ambassador to Cyprus Kenneth Brill said that the news published in the Greek-Cypriot newspapers claiming that the US was preparing a formula of ``land for recognition of TRNC'' was totally a speculation. Brill said, ``I don`t rely on every news issued by the Greek-Cypriot press about Cyprus. I saw several speculative news in the press about this issue.'' Stressing that the US supported the UNīs initiatives and especially the efforts of Ann Hercus, the UN Secretary General`s Deputy Special Representative to Cyprus, Brill said that other countries and the US were doing their utmost to have those initiatives to be productive. Responding to a quesiton, Brill said that the US supported a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation on the island. [03] Ecevit reads out govenrment program, repeats ``two state thesis''According to Anatolia Agency (14:37 hours, 12.1.99) Bulent Ecevit, the Turkish Prime Minister, read the government programme in the parliament and said that the main aim of the 56th government is to bring the country to the elections that will be held on April 18 in security.Ecevit inter alia said Turkey will sooner or later take the place she deserves in the integration process of Europe without making any concessions from her national rights. Pointing out that Turkey`s relations with the US and Russia will continue as they were, Ecevit claimed that the fact that the Greek Cypriot side gave up her idea of deployment of the Russian missiles on Cyprus was a successful result of the deepening of the multilateral relations between Turkey and the pseudostate. ``The reality of two separate states in Cyprus cannot be denied and this fact will be recognized sooner or later. The confederation proposal offered by Rauf Denktash, the TRNC President, is very appropriate in that respect and it is supported by our government,'' he added.
