[01] UN envoy says Ankara talks ``very positive and fruitful''

According to Anatolia Agency (11:42 hours, 6.10.98) Ann Hercus, the special Cyprus representative of the UN Secretary General, yesterday met with Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem; Ambassador Korkmaz Haktanir, Foreign Ministry under secretary; and Ambassador Faruk Logoglu, Foreign Ministry deputy under secretary.

Hercus, who went to Ankara on 5 October, made a statement after the meeting that was held at the Turkish Foreign Ministry saying that her contacts were ``very positive and fruitful''.

Hercus avoided an assessment of the confederation proposal Rauf Denktash put forth some time ago and said: ``The UN views were clearly expressed by the secretary general and the Security Council.''

Describing herself as a ``mediator'', Hercus said that the duty of a mediator is to try and bring the sides together and to ensure that views are expressed candidly. Hercus noted that Turkey and Greece have a special place in the solution of the Cyprus problem. She is expected to return to the island on 7 October.

[02] Spokesman: Turkey not seeking support in Syrian issue

According to TRT Television Network (15:00 hours, 6.10.98) Ambassador Necati Utkan, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman, replying to reporters´questions on Egyptian President Mubarak´s visit, said that it is taking place within the framework of the mechanism of high-level visits that exists between the two countries.

Replying to reporters´ questions in Ankara, Utkan assessed the meeting between President Demirel and President Mubarak.

``Such meetings are held every year. Our honourable president visited Egypt last year. Within this framework, now Mr. Mubarak is visiting our country. Naturally, current problems constitute the most important items on the agenda of the meeting between the two presidents. No doubt, the Syrian issue will constitute an important it,'' Uktan said.

In reply to a question on whether Turkey was left alone on this issue, Utkan said: ``We are not seeking support. This is a problem that Turkey should handle by itself. Therefore, I do not think that such an assessment is valid.''

    [03] Film to promote pseudostate´s ``reality''

According to KIBRIS (7.10.98), Turkish Cypriot film director, Dervish Zaim, who is currently in the occupied area for his new film that is to be shot in the occupied area, had a meeting yesterday with Dervish Eroglu.

During the meeting Eroglu said that Dervish Zaim, who is living and working in Turkey, is preparing a film scenario which will have as theme ``the invasion and occupation'' and the pseudostate´s reality.

He alleged that ``the film will demonstrate in the international field the Turkish Cypriots´ justness'', as he put it.

    [04] New telephone exchange system

According to KIBRIS (7.10.98), a new DMS telephone exchange system, which will serve 5 thousand subscribers, will be inaugurated soon in the occupied area.

The DMS telephone exchange system built by Turkey´s Netas will serve subscribers in the occupied Famagusta region.

A delegation from Netas has arrived in the occupied area for the inauguration. (MY)
