According to illegal BRTK TV, (4.8.98) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash replying to questions following his meeting with Russia´s special envoy to Cyprus Vladimir Chizov stated inter alia: ``Once the missiles arrive in Cyprus, they become the property of the Greek Cypriots, not Russia anymore. Hence, we explained to him our thesis that anything done to the missiles cannot be deemed as something done to Russia.''

He also claimed that ``the missiles have rendered and continue to render the solution of the problem difficult.''

He called for talks ``on an interstate basis''. This is the only way to set up a common umbrella, Denktkash said and went on to declare:

``The only reason for the non-solution of the Cyprus problem over the years has been the recognition of the Greek Cypriots as the legal Cyprus government. This recognition has been further upgraded with EU membership. Given that the Greek Cypriots´ entire goal is to take possession of Cyprus, they have deemed, and continue to deem, unnecessary to opt for a partnership agreement with us.''
