[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash: ``UK´s unfair treatment far worse than others''According to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 4.6.98) a delegation from the Turkish Armed Forces Academy graduates headed by Major General Kemal Yilmaz is holding contacts in the occupied area. Yesterday the delegation visited Rauf Denktash, ``assembly acting speaker'' Olgun Pasalar, ``prime minister'' Dervis Eroglu, and Taner Etkin, ``foreign affairs and defense minister.''At the meeting, Denktash inter alia claimed that the Turkish Cypriots are trying to remind the Greek Cypriots of the realities on the island by means of new documents that have been uncovered. ``The latest document'', he claimed, ``is a letter dated 2 May 1964, written by the British Prime Minister at the time to the United Nations, and saying that he met with Makarios and Dr. Kuchuk, and that Makarios cannot represent the whole of Cyprus''. Denktash said that despite this fact, soon after that, the same British turned around, accepted Makarios as the legitimate government of Cyprus, and made the world accept him as such. Denktash alleged that the British have also helped the Cyprus government join the EU. ``Therefore'', he said, ``the unfair treatment that guarantor Britain subjected the Turkish Cypriots to far exceeds what the other states did.'' He went on to claim that the realities on the island are still not seen, and that some circles say, that the EU will solve the problem. ``On the contrary'', he claimed, ``the EU has exacerbated the problem. If the EU maintains its stand, the situation on the island will continue, and Cyprus will be divided into two''. He alleged that if the world does not want the situation on the island to continue, it must accept the existence of the ``TRNC''. So-called ``acting assembly speaker'' Pasalar told the Turkish delegation that if the situation in Cyprus gets worse the Turkish Cypriots will move toward full integration with Turkey. He stressed that the rapprochement between Turkey and the pseudostate is very important. [02] Paper reports EU may suspend Cyprus´accessionAccording to a report in MILLIYET (3.6.98) it has been reported that four (as published) influential EU countries have ``secretly decided against Cyprus´accession to the organization.'' The report adds that high- ranking Foreign Ministry officials from Britain, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy secretly met in Paris last week to discuss the situation prior to the EU summit in Cardiff. A disclosure was not made after the meeting. However, it has been reported that the officials agreed that ``the process for Cyprus´accession should be obstructed if the island´s problem cannot be solved or if a rapprochement between the EU and Turkey continues to be blocked,'' the report says.[03] Turkish delegation finds Palermo meeting ``extremely useless''According to Anatolia Agency (10:02 hours, 4.6.98) Uluc Ozulker, Turkish deputy undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, who participated at the European-Mediterranean Foreign Ministers Interim Period meeting which started in Palermo on the island of Sicily in Italy, said on Thursday that the meeting wasn´t useful for Turkey and for the other countries.Speaking after the meeting Ozulker said that although the meeting was expected to extend support to the peace process in the Mediterranean appropriate to the spirit of the European-Mediterranean Partnership Conference held in Barcelona in 1995, it turned into an Arab-Israeli Summit. Ozulker said that the peace process in the Middle East became the main topic of the meeting and that this was wrong. Ozulker stressed that the peace process should only be supported by being faithful to the Barcelona Declaration. Ambassador Ozulker also said that none of the topics closely concerning Turkey was brought onto the agenda at the meeting and that bilateral contacts couldn´t be held with the other delegations. The Turkish delegation said that the meeting was extremely useless. Officials in the German delegation said they couldn´t understand why this meeting was held and that they didn´t expect a positive outcome to be issued from the meeting.
