[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash criticizes UK over visa, threatens Greek CypriotsAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (2.2.98) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said that "the Greek Cypriots, who have provided a base for Greece and bought missiles, will be punished if they commit a mad act."Speaking to a Turkish Cypriot "Hoteliers Union" delegation, Denktash said: "These are not issues that cannot be resolved. If the Greek Cypriots again prove that they need to be confined to a mental institution and are planning to commit a madness, then a punishment could be meted out to make them sorry for their action. We wish that such a situation will not arise". Denktash said that the "TRNC" has begun work to impose an "entry visa" on Britons, noting that Britain was the first to introduce a visa requirement. He said: "They imposed a visa requirement two days after I said that we would meet on an interstate basis. This is a political decision; it is unjust and illegal. We should not bow to it. [02] "Desertions from CTP"According to KIBRIS (3.2.98), the developments that followed the CTP (Republican Turkish Party) program and statute congress on 18 January have led to desertions from this main opposition party.A group led by Ozker Ozgur, who was expelled from the CTP soon after the congress through a decision by the party's central executive committee, is trying to convince many other members to resign from the party. Some 155 CTP members from various regions submitted their resignations to the party's executive committee in the last week. The resigned members are accusing the CTP central executive committee of "expelling Ozker Ozgur from the party in violation of the basic rules and ethics. It is clear that Ozker Ozgur, who served as the party leader for 20 years and now finds himself at loggerheads with the party's administration, will continue his efforts to win over the party's grass-roots to his side, the paper adds. [03] Greek Cypriots accused of exploiting missing persons issueAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (3.2.98) Rustem Tatar, the Turkish Cypriot representative to the missing persons committee, has said that the Greek Cypriot side is trying to exploit this humanitarian issue despite the good will efforts to resolve this issue which has been continuing for years. In a statement he issued yesterday, Tatar noted that the missing persons issue is a sensitive and humanitarian one and added: "Therefore, we adopted the principle of refraining from the use of propaganda in our joint work with the Greek Cypriots; however, this issue has been greatly exploited, particularly in recent times, and has begun to be used for propaganda purposes. This situation might endanger the implementation of the agreement on the issue." Tatar concluded by saying that talks on the missing persons issue will continue on the coming days.
