[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] TURKEY'S GUREL DEPARTS; SAYS 1998 WILL BE YEAR OF PROGRESSAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (1130 hours, 1/2/98) Turkish State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel who is responsible for Cyprus affairs has said that 1998 will be a year of economic and social progress in the occupied area. Gurel left the pseudostate yesterday. At a news conference at occupied Tymbou airport, Gurel said that during his visit he signed a very important agreement as well as a ``protocol'' for the implementation of agreements in 1998. Gurel noted that during his visit he had the opportunity to discuss concrete issues with ``TRNC officials'' regarding the implementation of agreements in 1998. So-called prime minister Eroglu said that during Gurel's visit they had the opportunity to assess several issues and to sign a ``protocol'' and an agreement regarding two important issues. He noted that a joint program has been drown up whereby 1998 will be a year of advancement and restructuring, and that if the program is implemented within the means of the ``budget'', then 1998 will be a year of growth and development. He said: ``Our people will be more prosperous in 1998''. Eroglu recalled that an agreement has been signed under which the ``TRNC'' was included in Turkey's list of priority investment areas. Investments will therefore increase, he said, adding: ``Anyway, our aim has always been to attract investors, to resolve certain difficulties, and to increase our prosperity level.'' Eroglu said that during a visit he will pay to Ankara this month, he will have the opportunity to assess with Turkish Government officials the new proposals Gurel will submit to the government. [02] GUREL: IMPOSSIBLE TO RESUME INTERCOMMUNAL TALKSAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (16630 hours, 1/2/98) Turkish State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel who is responsible for Cyprus affairs has claimed that ``there exist two sovereign, political, and equal units in Cyprus, in other words, two states.'' ``If you do not assess the problem on the basis of two states'', he claimed, ``it is as if you do not assess it at all.''Gurel issued a statement before he left the occupied area of Cyprus yesterday. Recalling Denktash's remarks to the effect that the resumption of the Cyprus intercommunal talks is now impossible, Gurel said that all the parameters of the Cyprus issue have changed. Gurel said: ``If progress is going to be achieved in Cyprus, the problem must be approached on the basis of these fundamental facts in Cyprus.'' [03] CINDORUK EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR TURKISH CYPRIOTSAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (0600 hours, 1/2/98) Husamettin Cidoruk, Turkey's Democratic Turkey Party [DTP] leader, has said that the Turkish economy is strong enough to make the pseudostate equal to the Greek Cypriot side should it be granted membership by the EU.During the inauguration of a DTP branch in Berlin, Cindoruk said that Turkey stands besides the Turkish Cypriots and stressed: ``Turkey will give the necessary support to the Turkish Cypriots should the Greek Cypriots become EU members.'' Commenting on the Customs Union relations between Turkey and the EU in his address, Candour claimed: ``It is becoming more and more difficult for Europe to compete with Turkey.'' [04] TALAT SUGGESTS PARTICIPATION IN EU ACCESSION PROCESSAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (1130 hours, 31/1/98) the Republican Turkish Party [CTP] has said that the Turkish Cypriot side should aim at EU membership and pursue the UN and EU processes together for a Cyprus solution. In a statement, CTP leader Mehmet Ali Talat said that the Cyprus issue will gain momentum in the coming days, and added: ``Extensive efforts should be exerted to secure favourable developments until the EU launches the accession process with the Greek Cypriot side. President Rauf Denktas' statements that he will participate in the talks only on the basis of two states are interpreted as new preconditions. Great sensitivity should be displayed in assessing the talks aiming at solving the Cyprus issue. The Greek Cypriot Administration leader is silent in face of reports that a document is being prepared even though both the Turkish Cypriot and the Greek Cypriot leaders oppose such a document. The Turkish Cypriot side should carefully assess the trap it will fall into should it find itself rejecting a document based on the Boutros-Ghali Set of Ideas.'' Explaining that various circles stress that it is important for the Turkish Cypriots to participate in the EU accession process, Talat said: ``The Turkish Cypriot side, in turn, should use its influence to participate in the EU accession process.''
