[01] Occupation regime continues to hold Lillis illegally

According to illegal Bayrak radio (2.1.98), Spyros Lillis, a Greek national who by mistake crossed into the buffer zone and illegally captured by occupation troops will remain in custody for another four days. Lillis, who was taken into custody on 21 December, was remanded for three days and later for another eight days. He was again brought before a "military court" today.

Despite the UN Peace Keeping Forces' attempt to have Lillis set free, he is still kept in custody illegally.

[02] Columnist says Clinton to stop Russian missiles to Cyprus

Columnist Yalcin Dogan writing in MILLIYET (2.1.98) under the title: S-300 Flirtation, says: "Developments backstage and behind closed doors in the White House concern several countries. Clinton and Mesut Yilmaz are the central figures in these backstage developments. Now various circles have been talking about a truly important issue the general outline of which was leaked during Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz's visit to the United States. The issue concerns `the security, not only of Cyprus, but of Turkey as well'. I am talking about `the S-300 missiles', the debate about which has been continuing for months now; the missiles sold to and planned for deployment in the Greek Cypriot sector. These ground-to-ground missiles have defensive and offensive capabilities and when fired from south Cyprus could reach as far as Ankara.

Turkey, naturally, is very uneasy over these missiles.

The Russian Federation is selling the S-300s to the Greek Cypriots. The issue was raised during Russian Prime Minister Chernomyrdin's visit to Ankara in mid-December. The Russian Prime Minister said the missile sale `has no political side to it, and is merely a commercial affair'. That may be so, but they are affecting the security of Turkey and the TRNC.

Upon returning to his country, Chernomyrdin made an interesting statement. He said `we might stop the missile sale if compensation is paid.' The timing of that announcement drew everyone's attention, for at that very moment Mesut Yilmaz was in Washington!

Clinton: `The Missiles Will not Come'

Before leaving for Washington Yilmaz had already `taken his measure'. He organized a meeting on the S-300s in Ankara with the soldiers' participation. The meeting dwelled `on military measures that would technically render the S-300s ineffective', and Ankara `took military measures against the S-300s. It set up a technical system that would render them ineffective". Rauf Denktash was briefed on it.

"It was after such preparations that Yilmaz raised the issue with Clinton at the White House.

Clinton spoke clearly: `Russia will not be giving the S-300s to south Cyprus'.

A backstage international discussion followed. According to leaked information here, `Clinton asked Moscow to stop the missile sale to prevent tension in the region, and Russia accepted it' At the least Russia showed such an inclination. But it is not yet clear what it will obtain in return. Ankara either does not know it or pretends not to know it.

What is certain, however, is that Clinton has now entered developments, is flirting with Russia over the missiles, and is reporting the results to Yilmaz.

Why is America doing that? Because it wants Ankara, which now feels unfettered after the EU decision, to reconsider any decision that it may be thinking of making regarding Cyprus.

That is, along broad lines the United States is trying to convey the message that `the end has not come for international diplomatic solutions'. After all, `anything' regarding the TRNC `is possible at any time!'"

[03] Turkish Cypriots in `Rush' for Cypriot passports

According to AVRUPA (1.1.98), the Cyprus High Commission in London has announced that more than 10,000 Turkish Cypriots have obtained Cyprus Republic passports since 1974.

According to a report in the most recent issue of the London weekly "Toplum Postasi" Cyprus High Commission officials say that each week at least five Turkish Cypriots apply for Cypriot passports.

The paper also cites Cyprus High Commission officials in London as saying that a famous businessman, a close relative of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, a former "minister", and numerous "high-ranking bureaucrats" are among those who have obtained Cyprus Republic passports.

It is being reported that Turkish Cypriots carrying Cyprus Republic passports would become EU citizens directly once Cyprus joins the EU.
