[01] Turkish Foreign Minister Gem is to arrive in the occupied area

During the meeting which will start at 1500 hours, issues related to the second round of direct talks, to be held in Switzerland will be discussed.

ORTAM says that at 1600 Hours, Cem will hold a press conference and then around 17.30 hours will leave the occupied area for Ankara.

The Turkish delegation which will come to the occupied area includes the following names: Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ambassador Onur Oymen, Deputy under Secretary Amb. Inal Batu. Head of the Greco-Turkish Relations Desk at the Turkish Chief of Staff Vice-admiral Mustafa Ozbey, Deputy General Director of the Cyprus Affairs Amb., Hayafi Guven, Head of the Information Office, Amb. Sermet Attacanli, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Council of Europe, Permanent Representative Oguz Demirel, Private Councillor to the under-secretary, Huseiyin Dirioz, Under-secretary to Turkey's French embassy in Paris, Engin Soysal and the Third Secretary from the Cyprus Desk Ethem Barkan Oz.

Meanwhile KIBRIS (6.8.97) reports that there was a high level meeting at the Turkish Presidential Mansion in Cankaya, under the chairmanship of Turkish President Suleyman Demirel, yesterday.

The latest developments pertaining to the Cyprus problem and the EU affairs were assessed at the meeting on foreign policy. No statements were issued following the two hour and 45-minute meeting. The foreign policy summit at the presidential mansion was held at the request of President Suleyman Demirel.

The Foreign Ministry technocrats briefed President Suleyman Demirel on the latest developments in foreign policy. It is being-indicated that the meeting mostly centered on Cyprus, Turkish-Greek relations, and the Turkey- EU relations.

Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister Bulent Ecevit, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ismet Sezgin, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, State Minister for Cyprus Affairs Sukru Sina Gurek, State Ministers Ahat Andican, Isin Celebi, and Refaettin Sahin, Foreign Ministry Underscretary Onur Oymen, Deputy Undersecretary for Cyprus and Greece Affairs Inal Batu and National Security Council Secretary- General Ilhan Kilic attended the meeting closed to the press. [02] Denktash to abandon second round of talks if trapped

In a statement at an inauguration ceremony in Nicosia today, Denktash said that he will attend the Geneva talks with the resolve of protecting the Turkish Cypriots' rights to the very end. Denktash said: "We do not accept any pressure from anyone in any way.

They are exerting efforts to detach us from Turkey. This is the intention behind their attempt to drag us into the EU without Turkey. They are trying to push us along this path with great haste and deftness and with the help of the world so as to radically solve the Cyprus problem in their favour, that is in favour of Greece."

As you know, we decided yesterday (4.8.97) to defend our rights t the very end. If we see that we would be made to fall into a trap whereby we cannot protect them, then the meeting might be abandoned.

"Clerides is openly saying that every Greek Cypriot should return to his former home and place otherwise there cannot be an agreement and that they are entering the EU for this reason.

Clerides must give up such a thinking. The mutual exchange of property is a must. This exchange issue is essential. When he says he is not for it, then there is no reason for my presence at the talks. For, insisting on it is tantamount to absolute rejection of federation, bizonality, agreement, and conciliation. We can have no part in this. If Clerides continues to reject the exchange method found in the UN secretary general's old report and in the document known as the Set of Ideas, and accepted by Vasiliou, then there will remain no reason at all for the talks."
