[01] Eroglu says no early "elections" in the pseudostate According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 8.7.97)

Dervis Eroglu, "prime minister" and leader of the National Unity Party (UBP), has charged that his "coalition" partner, the Democratic Party (DP), cooperated with the Republican Turkish Party in the election of the "president" and members of the so-called Audit Department and also exploited the housing "bill". Eroglu said: "At this time, we should not be confronting each other or acting in order to get more votes. At a time when the negotiations with the Greek Cypriots have started, we have no alternative but to continue with this government with goodwill for the good of the country".

Replying to questions by illegal TAK, Eroglu criticized the DP officials, including the party secretary general, for saying that the DP wants to work but that the UBP is preventing it from doing so.

Eroglu noted that there are not going to be "elections" this year, adding: "This issue was discussed when we established the government. There are no early elections as far as the UBP wing of the government is concerned. The DP leader is saying that elections will be held in 1998. We must do positive things until the elections are held. We must try to solve the problems of the Turkish Cypriot economy. At this time we should not be confronting each other or acting to get more votes".

He pointed out that the second slice of the $250-million loan supplied by Turkey will be released in the coming days and that the first slice of $50 million which arrived last month will be used properly.

Eroglu concluded by saying that he will pay an official visit to Turkey after the 20 July anniversary celebrations. (for the 1974 invasion).
