[01] Denktash plans a private visit to France

On 19 June Denktash will attend the inauguration ceremony of a new hospital in Istanbul. The hospital is being built with contributions by Cypriot doctors in Turkey. Denktash will return to the occupied area on Thursday.

KIBRIS also reports that on 22 June Denktash will leave for a private visit to Paris. He will be present at the opening of a photographic exhibition, that will include some photographs of his own as well.

On 24 June Denktash will give a lecture at the International Foreign Affairs Institute in Paris.

KIBRIS also reports that during his stay in Paris Denktash might meet with French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine.

Quoting Turkey's semi-official Anatolia Agency (AA), KIBRIS reports that diplomatic circles consider Denktash's forthcoming visit to Paris, after such a long time, as very important.

[02] Eroglu says US proposal may stem from crisis in Turkey

Eroglu and "Assembly Speaker" Hakki Atun separately met with members of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce yesterday.

Replying to a question during the meeting, Eroglu noted that the US proposal on a tripartite federation model for Cyprus as published in HURRIYET did not reach the "government".

Pointing out that the "government" wants political stability to be secured in Turkey, Eroglu remarked that the outside pressure regarding the Cyprus issue changes in accordance with the political situation in turkey. Eroglu said that this US proposal may have stemmed from the current political crisis in Turkey.

Eroglu stressed that Turkey's stand on the Cyprus issue does not change regardless of whether there is a government there.

[04] Demirel: Conditions of joint declaration are valid

Demirel received Rauf Denktash, who was in Ankara to receive the Turkish World Service Award, at the door of the Cankaya Mansion. Demirel and Denktash conferred at the former's office for a while. In a statement here, Demirel pointed out that a political solution has not been reached for the Cyprus problem yet. He claimed that the pseudostate and Turkey exert great efforts to solve the problem.

Demirel pointed out that the replacement of the UN Secretary General created new conditions. He recalled that Denktash and President Clerides now have the opportunity to talk once again, and that they will meet in New York on 9 July.

"The conditions of the joint declaration we signed together with Mr. Denktash on 20 January 1997 are valid for Turkey. What we seek is lasting peace. What we seek is the security of our kinsmen there. Turkey is behind the TRNC and its kinsmen there. We hope there will not be a mediator between Mr.

Denktash and Mr. Clerides and that these talks will be held directly. The United States recently appointed Mr. Holbrooke to help reach a political solution to the Cyprus problem. As you know, he is the architect of the Dayton Agreement. He has declared himself that the conditions in Bosnia- Herzeggovina and in Cyprus are different. Every problem has its own solution", Demirel said.

Demirel added Turkey is following the new developments with enthusiasm, adding that the resumption of the talks gives rise to hopes for peace.

Denktash stressed that the 20 January joint declaration, which was also approved by the Turkish Grand National Assembly, is a sine qua non for the Turkish Cypriots' "cause".

"We hope that under the new conditions, Clerides will come to New York with a new assessment. I believe that the 20 January declaration sheds the necessary light to him for a new assessment. Everybody knows how far the Turkish Cypriots can be pushed. The whole world knows that now. There is an end to sacrifice. That end is what we call the peace line, and we drew it together with Turkey. I have been wanting for a long time to meet with Clerides directly and openly", Denktash said.

He also expressed the hope that it will be more beneficial to hold direct talks without a mediator, instead of behind closed doors and through the mediation of diplomats. He pointed out that it is essential to abide by certain principles if any progress is to be made regarding the Cyprus question. He said: "Those principles are equality, the equal sovereignty of the two sides, that one side will not dominate the other, and that the 1960 guarantee system will continue in connection with security".

[05] Pseudostate determined as regards "sine qua non conditions"

In a statement after the meeting, Eroglu said that Denktash briefed them on his recent visit to Ankara. Eroglu said that there have been no changes in Turkey's policy toward Cyprus, that Turkey is loyal to the joint declaration signed on 20 January 1997, and that the pseudostate is determined in its stand regarding the sine qua non conditions.

Dervis Eroglu claimed that the remarks by President Clerides on the eve of his meeting with Denktash reveal that the Greek Cypriots do not intend to reach an agreement. "In that case", Eroglu said, "we must protect our status, we must strengthen our economy on this liberated land, and in this way ensure that our people are attached to this country and state".

Eroglu said that if the Greek Cypriots aim at having the Turkish Cypriots go back to their pre-1974 status, then there will not be any grounds for a conciliation at the talks between the two leaders. "We do not expect anything from talks that are held while Clerides talks in this way", he alleged.

[06] Turkish warships to leave occupied ports Friday

Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash visited the warships in the occupied Famagusta port.

Welcoming Denktash, the commander of the fleet, vice Admiral Taner Uzanay, declared that two Turkish warships will be calling at the ports next month.

The rate of inflation between 9 May, 1997 and 10 June 1997 was 1.09%.
