[01] Turkey and Denktash positive on appointment of Holbrooke

"Mr. Holbrooke, who is famous for helping to resolve the crisis in Bosnia- Herzegovina, is known as a realistic man who respects justice and law. We hope that he will bring his understanding to the Cyprus problem which has been on the wrong path for 34 years, and give realistic reports to President Clinton about the injustice and unfair acts done to Turkish Cypriots", Denktash claimed.

Turkish Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Sermet Atacanli on Thursday praised Holbrooke as an experienced and highly qualified diplomat. "We believe he will make an important contribution to the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to find a solution to the Cyprus question," Atacanli said.

Turkey's position is that the main effort on the Cyprus problem should come from the United Nations and that special representatives of other governments can only play a contributing role in these efforts, not a major role.

Meanwhile, the German government's recently-appointed special representative for Cyprus, Count Detlef Rantzau, said that they would support former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali's ideas which foresee a bilateral and bicommunal solution to Cyprus. These concepts also include the guarantor rights of Turkey, Anatolia news agency reported.

Count Rantzau met with Foreign Ministry undersecretary Onur Oymen, his deputy Inal Batu, and deputy Chief of Staff Gen.

Cevik Bir and said that his aim was to listen all parties, not to make proposals.

He said they had exchanged views "on the security of Turkish Cypriots, the equality of the two peoples, a federal state structure and the sovereignty of both societies."

He pointed out that negotiation with Cyprus over its bid for European Union (EU) membership would begin but the EU wanted both sides to participate in the results. He added that the EU could not tell societies how to solve their problems but this problem should not be brought to the European Union. Count Rantzau claimed during his meetings in Ankara that the S-300 Russian missiles bought by the Greek Cypriots and their joint defense doctrine with Greece would create instability in the region.

[02] Sea Wolf 97 exercises begin; ships to visit occupied area, Israel

The exercise will be carried out in the international waters and airspace of the Marmara, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean Seas until 28 June. Fleet Commander Admiral Salim Dervisoglu is directing the exercise.

Various sea war and command methods will be tried during the exercise in which Navy warships and most of the Navy helicopters, as well as Air Force planes, will take part. Live ammunition will be used. Part of the Fleet Command vessels will visit the occupied Kyrenia and Famagusta ports, Haifa port in Israel, and Alexandria port in Egypt.
