[01] OCCUPIED TRACHONI CHURCH IN DANGER OF COLLAPSE

According to KIBRIS (2.6.97) the historic church in the occupied village of Trachoni, which was being desecrated in 1974 during the Turkish invasion and occupation and was turned into a mosque, is in a dilapidated state and on the verge of collapse.

The paper says that because of the dangerous state in which the historic church is in, it is closed for the public.

The church was built in 1670 and around 1.5 billion TL is needed for repair work. (MY)

[02] DENKTASH ON A PRIVATE VISIT TO ISTANBUL

According to KIBRIS (2.6.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash left for a private visit to Istanbul. The paper says that Denktash's wife, Mrs Aydin Denktash, will undergo surgery on the neck.

It is not known when Denktash will return to the occupied area. (MY)

[03] TURKISH CYPRIOT GIRL IN LONDON DIES OF MAD-COW DISEASE

According to KIBRIS (1.6.97) a Turkish Cypriot girl living in London, Gulcan Hasan, 19, has died of the mad -cow disease.

KiBRIS says that the girl suffered from the disease for three years. It reports that the British press as will as the health officials are trying to cover up the case.

[04] INAL BATU SPEAKS OF ''TRNC'' RECOGNITION, REVEALS 6,000 USD PER CAPITA INCOME IN THE OCCUPIED AREA

KIBRIS's (1.6.97) London correspondent Serhat Incili reports that Turkish Foreign Ministry deputy Under Secretary, Ambassador Inal Batu, speaking to representatives of Turkish Cypriot organisations based in the UK, has declared that if the efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem do not bear positive results in the coming few years, then the occupied area will be recognized.

Batu further added that if a settlement is reached to the Cyprus problem, Cyprus' entry into the EU, where Turkey is absent, is not possible.

He alleged that Cyprus' application for membership constitutes one of the stumbling blocks before peace.

The other stumbling block before peace, claimed Batu, is the decision by the Cyprus government to deploy S-300 missiles. He stressed that they will not allow the deployment of these missiles.

Ambassador Inal Batu praised the Turkish Cypriot organizations in the UK saying that they ''carry weight''. He urged them to get organized under the roof of a ''Council of Turkish Cypriot Organizations''.

Inal Batu further revealed that the per capita income in the occupied area is not, as reported by Denktash's regime, 3.500 USD but 6,000 USD .

[05] ECEVIT SAYS CYPRUS FILE MUST BE CLOSED

According to KIBRIS (31.5.97) Turkey's Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader and the then Prime Minister of Turkey who ordered the Turkish troops to invade and occupy 40 percent of Cyprus in 1974, Bulent Ecevit, has once more spilled the beans about what was laying behing the Turkish invasion and occupation of the island. He said: ''Due to the TRNC's strategic importance, it is Turkey's security that can not be given up''.

Stressing that time has come for Turkey and the ''TRNC'' to take the necessary steps to close the Cyprus file and remove it from the world's agenda, Ecevit referred to the Cyprus government's decision to strengthen its defence against the Turkish threat by buying S-300 anti-aircraft missiles, and said: ''Russia's deployment of medium range missiles in Cyprus cannot be considered, from the military point of view, a threat. The Turkish troops here and Turkey can easily stop them from being a threat. However, what really bothers me is the danger of Russia's military presence in South Cyprus, under the excuse of sending technicians and experts. This worries me greatly''.

Ecevit also said that the occupied areas' water shortage can be easily solved by bringing water from Manavgat river in south Turkey.

Ecevit was given an honorary doctorate degree by the so-called Kyrenia American University. The President of the Southeastern University of USA, Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis, presented Ecevit with the honorary doctorate degree.

[06] TURKISH CYPRIOT RESERVES TO BE TRAINED AT TUZLA MILITARY CAMP IN TURKEY

According to ORTAM (2.6.97) work has started to give military training to the Turkish Cypriot reserve officers and sergeants at the Tuzla Military Training Camp in Turkey and not at the ''Gulseren'' (Karaolos) Training Camp in the occupied Famagusta.

Occupation army officials confirmed the report saying that the aim is to give ''professional training'' to the reserve officers and sergeants.

Turkish Cypriot university graduates undergo a three month military training before joining the occupation forces.
